Ino Yamanaka (Yamanaka Ino?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto created by Masashi Kishimoto. She is a member of Asuma Sarutobi’s Team 10, consisting of herself, Shikamaru Nara, and Choji Akimichi.

The name “Yamanaka” means “deep in the mountain” and “Ino” means “boar” (explaining why Sakura calls Ino a pig or “porker” to insult her). The names “Ino”, “Shika” and “Cho” are also a pun on the “Ino-Shika-Cho” winning combination in Hanafuda.

Background

During her years in the Academy Ino met Sakura Haruno, a girl whose sensitivity about her large forehead got her picked on by others. Ino befriended her by giving her a ribbon that could accent her face and show others that her forehead didn’t bother her. With Ino’s friendship, Sakura came to develop her own identity and self-worth. As Sakura’s confidence in herself grew, she developed a crush on Sasuke Uchiha, who Ino also had a crush on. When Sakura found out about this, she ended their friendship so that the two could properly compete for Sasuke’s affection, beginning a bitter rivalry between the two. The two maintain this rivalry until the end of their match in the Chunin Exam, after which they begin to rekindle their friendship. Nevertheless, the two maintain a competitive relationship and constantly attempt to outdo the other.

Personality

At first glance, Ino seems to be rather egocentric, apparently disliking Choji for his size and Shikamaru for his lack of motivation. She also seems to think highly of her appearance, as seen during the Chunin Exams when she attempts to seduce Neji Hyuga yet finds no success. Also, Ino may sometimes come off as selfish. While the latter trait may be factual, Ino in actuality cares very deeply for others’ well-beings and maintains a strong bond with her teammates. Through their bond as the second generation of the Ino-Shika-Cho Trio, the three all wear the same type of earring: a small silver hoop. Her caring side also shows itself during the Chunin Exams, where she forces her team into battle in order to save Sakura Haruno.

As a member of the Yamanaka clan, Ino works in her family’s flower shop and has become particularly talented in ikebana. The anime’s Konoha 11 arc shows that she has been able to find other uses for her time in the flower shop, and can tell a person’s profession by simply looking at the condition of their hands. The anime has also shown that Ino, like Sakura, has developed her own inner-self named “Inner Ino”.

Abilities

As a member of the Yamanaka clan, Ino specializes in mind-altering jutsu. With the Mind Body Switch Technique, Ino can transfer to another’s body and start using it as her own for a short period of time. While this is the most common of the jutsu that she uses, she has yet to have great success when using it; when transferring to Kin Tsuchi’s body in an attempt to force her team to surrender, Kin’s teammates simply attack Ino in Kin’s body instead. During her fight with Sakura Haruno, Ino is able to transfer to Sakura’s mind but is repelled by Inner Sakura before she can force her to forfeit. In Part II, Ino is able to use this ability on a hawk, and flies into the air to perform reconnaissance. In the anime, Ino also learns the Mind Body Disturbance Technique, which she can use to force opponents to fight each other while still remaining in her own body.

The anime expands upon Ino’s abilities more than the manga; she develops the New Approaching Technique (, Shin-dashin no Jutsu?) to engulf a target in a puff of smoke and drag them to the user’s location. The anime also addresses her learning of medical jutsu, as the manga leaves it unexplained. In the Konoha 11 arc, Ino watches Sakura use medical jutsu to reconstruct a body, though Ino can’t bring herself to watch the process. During the final filler arc, however, Ino finds herself unable to be of use for her teammates and becomes envious of Sakura’s ability to heal others. As such, Ino becomes Tsunade’s second apprentice in learning medical jutsu, hoping to be more useful to her friends. While she can’t heal fatal injuries, she is at least capable of healing minor wounds. Like most of the Konoha Genin, Ino becomes a Chunin over the timeskip.
