In the anime, Winry becomes terrified when the Elric brothers performed their first alchemic transmutation to create for her a doll, foreshadowing both the amazing and horrible aspects of alchemy. She is a self-professed “gear head” who helped her grandmother Pinako build Ed’s “automail”, which are prosthetic limbs. She sometimes travels with the Elric Brothers to maintain Ed’s artificial leg and arm. Her parents were doctors who were killed during the Ishbal War by Roy Mustang under Basque Gran’s orders because they treated the enemy as well as Amestris soldiers. In Conqueror of Shamballa, Winry takes care of Al for two years and patiently waits for Edward to return, which he temporarily did. She embraces Ed in tears of joy, making him blush. When the Thule Society attacked, she gives Edward new automail limbs (that had been adjusted to his growth) that enabled him to fight. After Edward’s departure, Winry continues working on automail with her grandmother, knowing that she would never see the Elric brothers again.
In the manga, her parents were murdered by Scar, who, after realizing that his brother sacrificed his own life to save his, instantly killed the Rockbell doctors in a fit of rage, though they had been treating his wounds. She finds out the identity of her parents’ murder when she accidently overhears Ed confronting Scar, and attempts to shoot her parets’ killer. She is stopped by Ed, however, who jumps in front of her to shield her from scar, stating that her hands are not meant to kill people, it meant to give people lives.
Winry is normally a very optimistic person and loves working on automail. She likes to do things her way and has a tendency to disobey the rules such as sneaking into Central or opening Ed’s watch when he told her not to. Winry’s love for her friends is only matched or even surpassed by her love of technology. She will absolutely lose herself finding a new piece of technology or tool. This often leads to some interesting scenes or situations, one extreme example is when she gets kidnapped by Barry the Chopper (when he had a human body) and almost gets killed. Usually these moments happen when she is asking Ed something or she just found out that the brothers were just returning from a dangerous mission. After losing her parents at a young age, she constantly worries over Ed and Al when she sees how dangerous their lives are becoming, not wanting to lose them like she lost her parents.
Similar to the manga, Winry holds a considerably deep friendship with Edward, though it does not seem as strong as it is in the manga when she constantly expresses her need to maintain Ed’s automail limbs. However, as seen in the episode “Her Reason”, Winry pays so much attention to Ed’s automail because of her deep care for him, and feels accomplished when she thinks that Ed wins in an automail arm wrestling contest. Winry accepts the Elric brothers as a part of her family and tries to play the role as their sister, though she may not truly see herself that way. Throughout the series, she tends to most express her feelings during moments of weakness, showing genuine concern and romantic interest towards Edward. Neither Ed nor Winry openly states about having a romantic interest in each another; however, it is generally assumed that they like each other without realizing or admitting it. The relationship between them would ultimately end after Conqueror of Shamballa, when she comes to the conclusion she might never see either Ed nor Alphonse ever again. The future of relationship between Edward and Winry is still unknown in the manga, though Winry has admitted to herself that she has fallen in love with him. At times, Edward shows blatant hints that he also shares those feelings, though he seems in be in complete denial of those feelings. This is shown in chapter 70, when Ed remembers what Riza Hawkeye said (You like Winry, don’t you, don’t, don’t you?) while Winry is halfway through reformatting his automail; he immediately rolls off the operating table and tells himself to calm down, reciting the periodic table of elements out loud. In turn, Winry asks herself, “How could I fall in love with someone this weird?”.
Winry has blonde hair and blue eyes. She is taller than Ed in the anime, but about his height in the manga.
