Franky (Furankī?) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series One Piece by Eichiro Oda. He is the seventh member to join and the Shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates as well as the oldest and tallest member. He is the builder of their current ship, Thousand Sunny.

Franky is a 34 year old cyborg who is the shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates and their most recently recruited member. He first appeared in the Water 7 arc.

Franky’s dream is to build a ship that would travel to the end of the Grand Line. This is the ship that the Straw Hats are currently riding, but his dream is not yet achieved until they make it to the end.

Franky usually acts tough, and is quickly angered, but he is sensitive and emotional to sad tales or tales of honor. Hearing such stories causes him to burst into tears or play songs on his guitar. When in tears, he will unconvincingly deny that he is crying. His most distinguishable personality trait is his flamboyant attitude.

He frequently shouts the word ‘SUPA’(SUPER) when he’s in a positive mood, or adds it into his speech. He also has a signature pose (see below) which he uses very often, and performs odd dances when large crowds are focusing their attention on him, such as during his fights and robberies as the head of the Franky Family. He also has an outlandish style of dress, consisting of only a Hawaiian shirt, dark blue speedo, sunglasses, and a huge gold chain.

Franky is strong-willed and free-spirited, with an often blatant disregard for rules. He does whatever he wants whenever he wants, though he usually wants little more than to build powerful ships or protect those he cares about. Quick to defend other people and take action if his friends are harmed, he also holds the belief that no matter what a person is like, they should never be prejudiced or exterminated simply because of who they are.

This often causes him to befriend and defend the wrongfully feared and persecuted. Because of his unbiased and protective attitude, he is quick in making friends and allies with even (or especially) the most unlikely of individuals, such as street thugs and pirates. He is seen as a ‘big brother’ figure, and is admired by many for his efforts to protect them, such as Nico Robin and the Franky Family. Monkey D. Luffy bears similar qualities (with the exception of engaging in unnecessary fights, or fighting needlessly for that matter) and because of this, despite the disputes the two had in the past, both grew to respect each other during the events of the Enies Lobby Arc.

Franky’s real name is Cutty Flam (Kati Furamu). When he was young his parents (who were pirates) threw him off their ship into the ocean. He was then rescued by a legendary shipwright named Tom and later made his apprentice. Tom’s other apprentice Iceburg was the one who gave him the nickname “Franky” because “Cutty Flam is a weird name”. Franky learned shipbuilding from Tom, but spent most of his time constructing warships designed to hunt and defeat Sea Kings. Each one named “Battle Franky” with a number corresponding to the order of construction.

When Franky was 12, Tom was put on trial by the World Government for having built the ship that Gol D. Roger sailed the Grand Line on. Tom managed to convince the judge to suspend his sentencing for ten years so he could finish building the Puffing Tom. This was a train that could sail the ocean and would help to improve the struggling economies of all the neighboring islands.

After fourteen years had passed (ten to build the train and the first line, four more to build the other three lines the train uses), the Marines were going to pardon Tom as thanks for creating the train. However, he was framed by CP9’s current leader, Spandam, who was after the blueprints for the ancient weapon Pluton, which had been handed down to Tom through the shipwrights of Water 7.

Spandam used the warships that Franky had built to attack Water 7. Although Tom and his apprentices stopped the attack, it appeared to everyone that they had been the ones attacking. As a result, Tom was immediatly sentenced to death. When Franky denied that the warships were his creations, Tom broke out of his handcuffs and punched him for the first time in his life. Tom then told Franky that no matter how potentially dangerous a ship was, it was never “good” nor “evil”, for no one and nothing deserved to be blamed simply for being what they were.

Franky would adopt this philosophy when he became an adult. Franky tried to save Tom by standing in front of the Puffing Tom as he was being taken away to Enies Lobby. He was run down by the train and was presumed dead.

He managed to fix himself with spare parts from an abandoned ship (and has on his shoulders tattooed BF 36 (making himself the 36th “Battle Franky”). Four years after his disappearance, he went to see Iceburg and was outraged to find that he had allied himself with the World Government not understanding that his sole reason for doing so was to protect the Pluton blueprints that Tom had entrusted to both of them.

Iceburg then gave the blueprints to Franky for safe keeping believing that even though as mayor of Water 7 he was on good terms with the World Government eventually he might be targeted as Tom was.

Four years later when Luffy and his crew come to Water 7, Franky had decided to help all of the island’s indigents by gathering them together in a ship-dismantling crew “The Franky Family”, a band of thieves and bounty hunters who wreaked havoc throughout the island and often clashed with Galley-La.

Some of the Franky Family mugged and severely injured Usopp, stealing the Straw Hats 200 million Beli. This led to an uproar from Luffy, Sanji, Zoro and Chopper, who invaded the Franky Family’s HQ in revenge, completely annihilating the Franky House and beating-up every single member of the Franky Family.

After Franky discovered what’d happened to his ‘family’, he sought revenge and challenged Luffy to a fight. In the middle of the battle they were interrupted by the foremen of the Galley-La Company, accusing the Straw Hat Pirates as the ones who attempted to assassinate Iceburg.

Because of this, Franky went and kidnapped Usopp and Merry, thinking he was still one of the Straw Hats, in order to lure Luffy to come to the rescue. Franky took them to his secret base, the old “Tom’s Workers” workplace. In there, the CP9’s Kalifa, Kaku, Blueno and Lucci kidnapped him and Usopp and took him with them on the Puffing Tom heading towards Enies Lobby. Franky was held captive by CP9 along with Nico Robin but managed to escape and eventually burned the blueprints for Pluton that CP9 had worked so hard for the last five years in Water 7 to recover.

Franky’s dream is to build a dream ship that can sail around the whole world. He used the 200 million Beli that he stole from the Straw Hats to buy some “Adam wood”, using it as the principal material in a new ship that he wanted to give to them.

Following the attack on Enies Lobby, Franky receives a bounty of 44 Million. The Franky Family wanted Franky to join the Straw Hats because he is now a wanted man, and his presence is a danger to the island. It is briefly mentioned that Franky is the son of a pirate, although it is yet to be known who this pirate is.

After the Straw Hats are introduced to the new ship, Franky goes into hiding because he doesn’t want to leave the Franky Family but is also afraid that he’ll accept their offer to join them.

Using drastic measures, the Franky Family steal his underwear and lure him towards Water Seven’s scrap island, where the ship is about to depart. He confronts Luffy there, who is holding his speedos and refusing to give them back unless he joins them. Franky initially refuses, which causes Nico Robin to use her powers to begin crushing his testicles. Iceburg reminds him that his dream will be unfulfilled unless he stays on that dream ship, to take care of it until its purpose is complete — which finally convinces Franky to join the Straw Hats (that and a desire to gain revenge on Nico Robin). Franky sends his farewells to the city of water and boards the ship with them.

In Chapter 438, Franky is seen defending his new ship against Garp’s attack, until Usopp arrived. During a moment after Garp’s first wave of attacks he and the other Straw Hats were trying to think of a name of the ship. While Franky wanted to name it as another battle Franky, Ice-Burg thought that the ship should be called the Thousand Sunny, a name that everybody liked (except Franky).

After that Garp threw an enoumous iron ball attached to a chain (bigger than Garp’s own ship) that would crush the entire ship. Franky then showed the ship’s new ability the Coup De Burst, which launched the ship into the sky avoiding the attack and being out of Garp’s reach. Afterward the crew was celebrating the return of Usopp and Robin as well as their new crew member Franky.

Franky demonstrated Thousand Sunny’s “soldier dock system” when a storm appeared. Franky stays on Sunny when Luffy, Sanji and Nami investigate a ghost ship. When Brook arrived on the ship, Franky was initially shocked to see him, but later warmed up to him when Brook started complimenting on how impressive the ship was. After fighting an invisible monster, they enter the island, and meet the same Cerberus that chased Nami’s group.

When the Cerberus is down and tamed (because of Luffy) they were attacked by zombies, in which Franky, Luffy, Sanji, Robin and Zoro take down. After Sanji and Zoro are separated from the group, more zombies assault Franky, Luffy and Robin. During the escape, Luffy got kidnapped, and before Robin and Franky could attempt to save him, they on a bridge are assaulted by a gigantic spider that acts like a monkey.

Franky destroys the bridge to flee from the general zombies. They are falling down, but then Robin makes wings of 100 arms and is flying in the air for 5 seconds. Franky uses Strong Right to safely pull themselves to the other side of the bridge. Suddenly Brook appears from the sky. After Brook falls, the gigantic spider-monkey (Talleran)comes back up on the sides.

Franky takes an iron chain and 2 stone pillars in order to create stone nunchakus, which he hits Talleran with. After that, Brook does the Yahazu Giri and presumably finishes him off. Later, he and Robin join up with Usopp and Chopper after Nami is captured by Absalom, and they go to the Thousand Sunny to wake Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. Now, all of the Straw Hats are attacking Thriller Bark in order to rescue Nami and defeat Moria. Currently, he is tending to a wounded Brook while Zoro takes care of Ryuuma.

As a cyborg, Franky’s artificial parts grant him incredible strength (he punched Nero through a train during the Enies Lobby arc), as well as making him invulnerable to most attacks from the front. He also has the abilities to shoot fire and nails from his mouth, fire bullets from his index fingers, and fire bullets and cannonballs of compressed air from his arms and hands. His years of being a ship dismantler and bounty hunter also seem to contribute to his formidable strength and fighting skill.

Some common attacks include Strong Right (Franky launches his right fist forward and can reel it back in with a chain, similar to Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Pistol) and Coup de Vent (Franky connects his arms with a T-shaped pipe and sends a powerful blast of concentrated air out that can destroy entire buildings, his most powerful attack that uses up the most cola).

Franky also has the power to turn into a centaur-like form (with an extra set of legs strangely extending forward from his pelvis), though he has implied that its use is limited by stating he is “super powerful this week” just before he uses it. Despite his pride in it, it seems to do relatively little for any of his combat abilities, save for using his four legs to trap his enemy’s limbs, leaving them completely at the mercy of his attacks.

Depending on what kind of drink Franky has as his fuel, his hair style and attitude can vary, revealed when Chopper accidentally hands him vegetable juice and tea[1]. It is also revealed that Franky’s strength and weapons are many times greater when he has cola in his stomach fridge, and he needs it as a fuel for some attacks, particularly his ranged weapons.

His hair acts as a kind of meter to the amount of cola in his stomach being tall if he is full and sagging if empty. Franky’s stomach compartment can hold up to six bottles or six litres of cola. Residing several years in Water 7’s back alleys resulted his unorthodox fighting style, where he prefers to fight head-on and shows no regard whatsoever in the traditional ethics of fighting. If needed, he can use his incredibly durable body to block incoming head-on attacks from adversaries, a common tactic. Another common tactic is to use his trash-talking to provoke his opponents into unwisely attacking him.

Also, as a shipwright, his building capability is top notch; aside from building Strawhat’s Thousand Sunny, Franky is able to build a very stable bridge across a large gap in an instant, using only the debris nearby (while also paying amazing attention to detail). (chapter 461) As of now, it would seem that Franky’s right hand is for physical attacks and his left hand is for weapon-based attacks.

Franky’s weakness is his back: When he built his cyborg parts, he was unable to reach around to his back, and thus, there is no machinery in that part of his body. Because of this, Franky’s back can be hurt there by something as small as a needle while the front of his body can take bullets and bombs without so much as a scratch.

Nico Robin (Niko Robin?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series One Piece. She is the sixth member and the archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates. She is the oldest female member, and the wisest member of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Robin has a bounty of 80 million Beli, making her the third “most-wanted” of the Straw Hats as well as the female with the highest featured bounty in the series. She got her first bounty of 79 million Beli when she was eight, during an incident in which she supposedly destroyed six Buster Call ships through the use of the powers she gained by eating a Devil Fruit known as the Hana Hana no Mi (Hana Hana no Mi), but this was proven wrong in her flashback. The fruit’s power enables her to conjure up multiple replicas of her body parts (most often her arms) upon any surface she is able to see. She is very powerful and dexterous as a result.

While she is infamous in the public eye for her supposed destruction of the ships, the World Government truly wants her captured because she is the last surviving person to be able to decipher poneglyphs. They claim that her ability to read poneglyphs would lead to the revival of the ancient weapon Pluton.

While some of the more well-informed civilians believe this, and want her dead because of it, it has been implied that the World Government truly wants Robin captured so she won’t discover the secrets of the Blank Century, a lost piece of history that contains information the World Government wants to keep hidden. They also want Robin to resurrect Pluton for their own use. Robin has stated that she herself doesn’t care at all about Pluton.

The author has also replied to a fan’s question to saying that right now Robin’s measurements are as follows:

Height: 188cm (6′2″), making her the second tallest member of the Straw Hat Pirates, and the tallest female member.

Her 3 measurements are (according to Sanji) B99 W59 H89 (39″-23″-35″).[1]
In the now-defunct 4Kids English dub, she speaks with a Southern American English accent, coinciding with her cowgirl outfit as “Ms. Sunday”.

In a recent Japanese Fan Poll, Robin ranked as the fifth most popular character, which also makes her the most popular female character.

Oda has stated he uses the color purple to represent her, and she smells of flowers.

Robin is a mysterious and serious person who appears quiet and reclusive. She is sometimes thought by those around her to be cold and heartless, but it was proven that she is actually a kind person who always thinks before she acts. She oftentimes only speaks when something interesting or important has happened. She loves to study history, and joins the Straw Hat pirates for comfort and the freedom to study and read. She is also quick to point out gross or realistically morbid facts, often creeping out Nami or Usopp.

Robin at first tried to distance herself from other people, even her friends, as she believed that her past and enemies would eventually tear her away from them. For that reason, she rarely calls her comrades by name and instead uses titles, such as Miss Navigator (Kōkaishi-san, i.e. Nami), Mr. Swordsman (Kenshi-san, i.e. Zoro), Long Nose (Nagahana-kun, i.e. Usopp), Mr. Cook (Kokku-san, i.e. Sanji), Mr. Doctor (Isha-san, i.e. Chopper) and Captain (Senchō, i.e. Luffy).

However, she tends to call Luffy by his name at times. She is the only crew member who is normal-themed and emotionally reserved. Unlike the other Straw Hats, she is not subject to face faults or over exaggerated outbursts of emotion. However she is more often shown entertaining herself and plays around more as the series goes, often with the help of her Hana-Hana powers. She also exhibits “sweatdrops” on the back of her head whenever someone around her acts strange, one of the most common characteristics in the history of both anime and manga.

After Enies Lobby, it is expected that she will become more open with her crewmates because she now knows they will never abandon her and has already begun to do so. Through the recent Thriller Bark arc, Robin has referred to, not only Luffy, but Franky, Usopp, Nami, and Chopper by proper name instead of nickname or position. She seems to have taken an interest in Luffy due to the D in his name .

Robin is the wisest and most sensible member of the crew. She has a vast knowledge of the seas and the world, and usually keeps her head during surprising situations, allowing her to logically analyze the situation without losing her cool. This trait makes her different from the other Straw Hats, who often comically react melodramatically to unexpected happenings and hold irrational ideas and conclusions.

Sanji constantly flirts with Robin, as he does with Nami, and was the first member (excluding Luffy) to accept her as one of the crew. He describes her as ‘a distant, more mature beauty than Nami,’ yet calls her “Robin-chan” (vs. “Nami-san”), which has a “cuter” and more childish aspect. For the most part, Robin simply puts up with his advances and dismisses them, but by the time that becomes obvious, he’s been distracted by something else, usually Nami.

Despite her attempts to keep herself distant, Robin has fallen for her new friends and has taken the role of the distant den mother. She and Nami are constantly depicted speaking together. Nami has stated that Robin is the only Straw Hat who truly understands her, and Robin is the only crewmate Nami doesn’t try to boss around.

Chopper’s initial fear of her has also completely disappeared. Robin also respects and admires Franky a great deal, due to the cyborg’s altruistic efforts in defending her throughout Enies Lobby, which she more or less decided to repay by forcing him to become a Straw Hat, an effort which included squeezing his testicles with her Hana-Hana Fruit powers, putting him in excruciating pain until he agreed to join.

As an archaeologist, Robin values ancient artifacts and buildings and will risk her life to protect them. She also gets incredibly angry with those who destroy these ancient relics. This is shown on Skypeia Island when she fought against Yama, the chief of Enel’s enforcers, who destroyed many of the ruins they were surrounded by to hurt Robin.

Though this enraged Robin, she held back on attacking because she didn’t want the ruins to get damaged any further, easily allowing Yama to dominate the battle and severely injure her. Once she led Yama away from the ruins, however, she fought with full force and quickly crushed him; the battle ended with Robin rolling Yama off a cliff, and breaking his back while he was falling.

Robin’s dream and personality were influenced by three people in her past: Jaguar D. Saulo, her mother Nico Olvia and Professor Clover. It was Professor Clover that made her an archaeologist; it was his research on poneglyphs that sparked her interest in True History.

Clover allowed her to read books in his library which sparked her interest in them. It was Olvia who encouraged Robin to flee and live to chase her dreams. Jaguar D. Saulo, who was Robin’s first friend, encouraged Robin to search for her friends and taught Robin to laugh even if it hurt, which fortified her quiet, shy nature and pleasant smile.

Her dream, formally shared by her mother, is to find and decipher the Rio Poneglyph, which contains the True History of the Blank Century and the One Piece world.

Nico Robin was born on the island of Ohara, and comes from a family of archaeologists. Her mother, Nico Olvia left to sea to find out the True History when Robin was 2 years old leaving her in the care of her mother’s brother, and his wife Ms. Roji. Ms. Roji neglected and abused Robin, making it clear time and time again that she wasn’t wanted in her family.

She was expected to keep out of sight and wasn’t allowed to join in any celebrations or privileges. Her Devil Fruit powers scared and disgusted the islanders, causing many of the children to bully her. The adults were no better, telling their children to avoid her and accusing her of violence when she used her Devil Fruit abilities to protect herself from bullies. Her only friends are the scholars at “the Tree of Knowledge”, with Professer Clover of the archeology lab, a friend of her mother, trying to take care of her.

At only eight years old, she passed an archeology exam and officially was inducted as a scholar of the tree. However, when she announced that she also wanted to study the True History, the other archaeologists reprimanded her and said that studying the True History was forbidden and punishable by law.

Robin replied by saying that she’d used her Devil Fruit abilities to spy on the archaeologists, and that she knew they secretly studied the True History in the Tree of Knowledge’s basement at night. This horrifies the other archaeologists, and causes Professor Clover to severely admonishing her, saying that if she ever spied on them or mentioned finding the True History again, she’d be permanently banished from the Tree.

Robin ran off crying and headed to the northwest beach of Ohara, where she met the giant Jaguar D. Saulo who was washed up on shore. These two became fast friends and Robin continued to visit him for the following four days, while he built his raft. After Saulo found out he was on Ohara, he informed Robin about the battleships that were on their way to Ohara to raze it from the earth as they were studying the poneglyph.

Nico Olvia had recently escaped from the marine ship and returned to Ohara (with thanks to Saulo’s efforts). She informed the archaeologists that her colleagues had been killed by the marines. She tells them that the marines were able to infer that Ohara was their homeland based on the items they possessed on the ship, and they were headed towards Ohara, likely to kill them.

The archaeologists, however, refused to leave; they wished to continue to protect the tree and the knowledge they had worked so hard to research and procure. When Olvia was warned that CP9 was on shore, Olvia rushed out of the Tree of Knowledge, running past her daughter without notice.

Robin arrived at the Tree of Knowledge, and asked Clover about her mother’s whereabouts. As a wanted woman, Olvia wished to cut all ties with her daughter, so that Robin might not be associated with a criminal mother.

Doing as Olvia wants, Clover denied that Robin’s mother was on the island, but Robin seems skeptical. Clover quickly changed the topic and urged Robin to leave, and not to mention that she is an archaeologist, or she might be arrested too. Robin refused and CP9 busted into the Tree of Knowledge and began searching for the Poneglyphs.

Outside, agents warn the island’s residents to move to the evacuation boat, or be destroyed. Olvia confronted Spandine, the director of CP9, but was quickly subdued by the brunt force of his agents.

Back at the Tree of Knowledge, all of the archaeologists were arrested and taken outside the tree, and once again Clover urged Robin to escape, but she refuses. Spandine and the rest of CP9 arrived with a gravely wounded Olvia, who instantly recognizes her daughter once her name is spoken.

CP9 finds the poneglyph in the basement of the tree, and Sengoku sentences the archaeologists to death by Buster Call. However, Clover begins to speak out, stating his theory on why the government really wants to keep the 100 year void secret. However before Clover can reveal the name of this civilization, he is shot point blank and mortally wounded.

Seeing that the battleships have already arrived, Saulo rushes off to find Robin. As the attack on Ohara begins, it is discovered that Robin also has the capacity to read poneglyphs. As the bombardment begins, Spandine and CP9 make their exit, Robin and Olvia reunite, and shortly afterwards, Saulo arrives.

It is then revealed that Saulo is a former marine vice-admiral, and aided Nico Olvia on her escape. Olvia asks Saulo to make sure that her daughter is taken safely off the island, and tells Robin that she must continue to live. Robin begs to stay with her mother, but Olivia insists on staying. There is something more that she must do.

Saulo follows Olvia’s wish and manages to reach the island’s shore. But the Marine ships spot him and open fire. Saulo retaliates and destroys several ships, at least until Kuzan (later known as Aokiji) appears and combats with Saulo. Robin tries to make for the evacuation ship but trying to use her Hana Hana abilities to get aboard and frightens the people onboard, plus Spandine tells them to not let her on since she claims she is an archaeologist, though this would be fortunate for Robin.

The ship is destroyed by another vice admiral, who would later become Admiral Akainu, who does it as a precaution if any archaeologist snuck aboard. This act disgusts both Saulo and even Kuzan. Saulo tries to get away with Robin but is hit by Kuzan’s ice power. As the ice starts to creep across his body, Saulo tells Robin to escape.

She refuses, yelling “I have no one on the sea!” Then, Saulo promises her that the ocean is a vast place, a place where she would surely find comrades. “One day,” he assures her, “friends who will protect you will appear”. His last act is to laugh as he is frozen, sticking to his philosophy to laugh from his heart even in bad times, and reflecting a common trait of those who had the middle name D.

Back at the Tree of Knowledge, Olvia, Clover and the other scholars have tossed out as many books into the ocean as they can so future generations can find them. They then realize there’s nothing more they can do and stay in the tree as it burns around them. Olvia apologizes to Robin for not leaving any parting words as a mother.

Robin runs to the raft that Saulo built, only to be met by Kuzan. He tells her he’s letting Robin go, curious of why Saulo risked his life for her. However, Kuzan warns her that he is not a friend, and he would be the first to come after her if she were to cause trouble . Robin then leaves on a boat guided by an ice path Kuzan sets for her. Remembering Saulo’s words, she tries to laugh but weeps as Ohara is burned to the ground. Apparently she is the only survivor.

Afterwards, Robin leads a hard life on the run thanks to the 79 million-beli placed on her head by Spandine (the story of her sinking six Navy ships was nothing more than a lie to cover up the truth of Ohara from the public). She would run into different people who would at first befriend and help her, but they’d always try to turn her in once they realized the reward they could gain for doing so and the amount of danger they were in for protecting her.

People everywhere believed her existence was a sin, that the world would be destroyed if she didn’t die. Though Robin managed to avoid capture, her experiences affected her deeply and she began to have a hard time trusting people. Eventually, she came to the belief that no one would ever allow her happiness, and resigned herself to a fate of always having to betray comrades and commit unimaginable horrors to survive. She became a master of betrayal and deception, seeking out powerful men for protection, only to stab them in the back when danger came, saving herself.

Through it all, however, she never stopped dreaming about discovering the True History, and did whatever she could in order to find the Rio Poneglyph. Sometime four years ago when she was 24, Sir Crocodile took an interest in her ability to read poneglyphs, and he made a deal with her: If she accepted a position as vice-president of Baroque Works and helped him conquer Alabasta and resurrect Pluton, then he’d protect her from the authorities.

Robin first appears as “Miss All-Sunday” (”Miss Sunday” in the English anime), agent and vice-president of the Baroque Works organization, at the end of the Whiskey Peak arc. She was responsible for blowing up Igaram’s decoy ship, though Igaram survived, which was actually her real intention.

She met the Straw Hat Pirates and offered them an Eternal Pose to the Island of Nothingness so they wouldn’t have to land at the dangerous Little Garden while trying to get to Alabasta. However, Luffy broke it, saying that he would not allow an enemy to decide their destination. Princess Vivi revealed that Miss All-Sunday had allowed Vivi to follow her and discover the identity of Baroque Works’ president, Sir Crocodile, only to turn around and tell Crocodile Vivi’s true identity and purpose..

As the Baroque Works Saga continued, Robin’s motives grew in mystery. She appeared to care nothing about Baroque Works, considered all her defeated agents “worthless”, and continuously and discreetly helped the Straw Hats out. In one instance, she saved Luffy’s life after he had been beaten and left for dead by Crocodile and got Pell (whom she earlier attacked) to help him, yet she also captured Vivi in Rainbase, faked the princess’s death to horrify Pell, never directly disobeyed any of Crocodile’s orders and severely incapacitated the Royal Army along with Tashigi and her Marine squad.

Around Baroque Works’ enemies, she’d either act menacing or darkly humorous, such as when she mocked and teased the Straw Hats during their first encounter and when she faked Princess Vivi’s death as a cruel joke on Pell. It soon became apparent that she cared for neither side, and had her own motives for everything she did.

Ultimately, Robin ended up betraying Crocodile by lying to him about the poneglyphs he wanted her to decipher for him. They contained extensive information on Pluton, but Robin only told Crocodile that they were about history.

However, Crocodile caught her bluff, and her subsequent attempt to assassinate him failed. She was in turn stabbed by Crocodile and left for dead. She later revealed to King Cobra that she only teamed up with Crocodile in order to find the Rio Poneglyph, which she believed to be hidden in an Alabasta tomb. Knowing she would only gain access to the tomb if she helped Crocodile conquer Alasbasta, she decided that the destruction of the country would be worth it if she discovered the 100 years of lost history.

However, the Rio Poneglyph wasn’t in the tomb, and with her last lead gone, she felt her life no longer had any purpose or chance for happiness. Resigning herself to death, she was shocked when Luffy chose to save her life, overpowering her and forcibly carried her out despite her protests and yells to let her die.

After Luffy defeated Crocodile, Robin stowed away on the Going Merry, only revealing herself when safely away from Alabasta, much to the shock and anger of the Straw Hats. She told Luffy that since he’d saved her when she’d wanted to die, it was his fault that she was now living a meaningless life, and he must therefore let her join his crew.

Much to the surprise of the others, Luffy cheerfully accepts Robin’s reasoning and agrees. Though most of the other Straw Hats were initially scared and/or suspicious of her (minus Sanji), Robin quickly managed to charm the very friendly crew into accepting her. During the Skypeia arc, she discovered the secret to locating the Rio Poneglyph, and with her dreams rekindled, began to feel more optimistic about the future.

After the Davy Back Fight, she was confronted by Kuzan, now called Aokiji, who had become one of the Marine’s three Chief Admirals. After meeting and observing the Straw Hats, he decided that they were too dangerous to let live, with Robin being the deadliest of them all.

He reveals to the others a bit of her dark past in front of a terrified Robin: apparently, every group she had ever been with was wiped out, leaving her as the only survivor. Aokiji insinuates that Robin had purposefully manipulated and betrayed those groups for her own ends, proceeding to ask Robin if the Straw Hats are her “new tools”. He also promises the Straw Hats that, one day, Robin’s “curse” would bring itself down on their heads and annihilate them.

Vehemently protesting that she is not a bad person, Robin tries to kill Aokiji in a moment of anger, but fails. Aokiji then freezes Nico Robin with his Hie Hie (Ice Ice) Devil’s Fruit powers, and would have smashed her to pieces if she hadn’t been saved by her crewmates.

Later in the Water 7 arc Robin disappeared into the city. It then turned out that she is working with a government organization called CP9, and had betrayed the Straw Hat Pirates. Under CP9’s orders, she attempted to assassinate the mayor of Water 7, Iceburg, framing Luffy and the others for the crime. However, her “betrayal” was actually the result of blackmail: If she didn’t cooperate with CP9 and helped to resurrect Pluton, CP9 would launch a Buster Call on Water 7 and destroy the Straw Hats, promising their safety only if Robin turned herself in to the World Government.

Still haunted by memories of the Buster Call on Ohara, and desperate to protect the only people who had ever treated her kindly since that day, Robin accepted the deal, deciding that she’d destroy everyone in the world if it meant saving the Straw Hats’ lives. When the Straw Hats confronted her about her betrayal, she acted cold and heartless, saying that she carried an unspeakable darkness within her soul, and thus could never stay with them. However, Luffy and the others soon discovered the true reasons behind her betrayal, and they mounted a rescue attempt, first on the sea trains leaving Water 7 and later on the government island of Enies Lobby.

Robin greatly resisted these rescue attempts, even going so far as to attack some of the Straw Hats to stop them from saving her. Even when it becomes clear that CP9 would not hold up their end of the bargain by trying to arrest the Straw Hats, and Robin had nothing to lose by letting them rescue her, she still dreaded their saving her. It was revealed that Robin didn’t want to be rescued because she believed that her endless pursuit by the World Government would eventually cause the Straw Hats to view her as a burden and cast her away, just like every other person she’d met.

Having grown attached to the only people who’d ever bothered to care for her since Ohara, Robin decided that she would rather die, or cause the apocalypse, than feel the pain of the Straw Hats abandonment.

During the assault on Enies Lobby, Robin stood in the Tower of Justice and shouted to the Straw Hats her fears of being abandoned by them, that the reason she wanted to die was because she’d rather cease to exist than watch their betrayal. This caused CP9’s leader Spandam to wickedly laugh and point to the Government flag on top of the tower, declaring that there were over 170 countries under the World Government’s rule, and with that kind of power after her, only a fool would have believed Robin wasn’t a burden.

Luffy responded by telling Sogeking to burn down the flag, a declaration of war against the World Government and over 170 countries. This was Luffy’s way of showing Robin that he and the Straw Hats would never abandon her–if the World Government was her enemy, it would be the Straw Hats’ enemy too. This shocked Robin, who hadn’t thought that anyone would do so much for her. She had grown to believe that no one alive would ever give her the choice of living happily.

She remembered Saulo’s promise that she would find friends on the vast seas, and looking at the determined faces of her crew mates, realized it’d come true. Luffy then encouraged Robin to say that she still wanted to live, and she did, bursting into tears and shouting out across Enies Lobby that she wanted to sail with them again. This scene has since become famous among fans and is regarded as one of the most emotional, touching points in the series.

Soon after, the Straw Hats defeated CP9 one by one, rescued Robin, and escaped in the Going Merry. In a final act of poetic justice, Robin used her Seis Fleur Clutch attack to break Spandam’s back as they sailed away from Enies Lobby, finally avenging herself and the people of Ohara.

Later, Robin was celebrating at Water 7 with her friends and those who helped her escape Enies Lobby. While standing away from the celebration, she was once again greeted by Aokiji. He told her that he let her go 20 years ago only because Saulo had been his friend, but regretted his decision after observing Robin for several years, and realizing that she still hadn’t found her place in the world.

Deciding that a “wild bomb” like her was too dangerous to be allowed to “fly around freely”, he said that he intended for Enies Lobby to be the end of it all, but hadn’t expected Luffy’s crew to defeat CP9. Then Aokiji asked if she has found a home with the Straw Hats, and she answered positively. He also asked if she would show him whether he made the right choice by allowing her to live, and she said “I’ll do my best”. Aokiji then smiled and left, saying that Ohara isn’t completely gone yet, as she is still alive. When Aokiji disappeared, she returned to the party and joined Luffy’s meat-eating contest.

After the events of Enies Lobby, Robin’s bounty was increased to 80 Million, with a new picture. The increase was very small in comparison to the rest of the crew (with the exception of Chopper). In chapter 437, when Franky refuses to join the crew, Robin used her powers to help persuade him to join the crew (by crushing Franky’s testicles). This rather painful display of her abilities shocked even the other Straw Hats (so much so that Luffy begged Robin not to turn Franky into a female). She just smiled and said that they are pirates, and when they find a large treasure, they grab onto it and don’t let go.

She stays on Sunny as Luffy, Sanji and Nami investigate a ghost ship. When Brook arrived on the ship, he asked to see her panties, much to Nami’s disgust, but Robin reacted with calm indifference to the absurdity of the situation. He also asked to swap plates with her during dinner, as she had more meat than him. When Brook revealed why he had no shadow, Robin seemed to remember something. She helped the others combat an invisible enemy with a beast-like voice.

The invisible creature tried to grab her and also began licking her like a dog. After she and the rest of the Straw Hats leave the ship, they encounter Cerberus, and Robin remarks that the creature looked “cute”. Afterwards, Robin was the person who told the other Straw Hats all about Gecko Moria.

After Sanji and Zoro disappeared, Robin, Franky, and Luffy fought off all the zombies in there until Luffy got kidnapped. Before getting the chance to save him, Robin and Franky are blocked by a giant spider that acts like a monkey. Franky destroyed the bridge they were on to escape from the situation and Robin reacted by creating wings out of hands.

Though she stated she could only hold them for 5 seconds, it was enough for Franky to use his attack Strong Right to grab the entrance way from which the bridge had been attached to. As they are pulled up to the opening, Brook suddenly falls from the sky, creating a deep skeleton-shaped hole in the ground. Right afterwards, the spider-monkey recovers from the fall and attack Robin and Franky, but they cooperate to severely injure the zombie.

Just when it seemed that they’d turned the tables, they are assaulted by a pack of Spider-Mice, who traps them in their unbreakable webs. However, they are saved by Brook, who jumps up from the hole he made and uses the hidden sword in his cane to defeat the spider-monkey.

Robin and Franky have made contact with a distraught Ussop and Chopper, using the salt given to them by Brook to defeat an entire room full of zombies. While Franky pounded the Zombies into submission she used her powers to purify several zombies. Afterward the others and her quickly made there way to the Sunny and woke up Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. After doing this and helping Franky explain the situation she sits back while Franky tells about Brook’s connection to Laboon. She’s now joining the crew in the counter attack on Thriller Bark. In chapter 461, she begins to fight Cindry.

Robin ate the Hana Hana no Mi. She can spread multiple replications of her body parts from her body, on other bodies, or on other objects. The nature of her powers allow for much versatility and a virtually infinite number of uses, from clever battle strategies to speeding up everyday chores to incapacitating entire armies, making Robin one of the strongest fighters in the Straw Hats.

Other uses include, but aren’t limited to: putting battle opponents in submission holds where they can easily be injured, carrying and catching injured friends or heavy objects, easily attacking enemies from long distances, easily avoiding enemy attacks, and sprouting eyes and ears in places where she can spy on others. In one-on-one battles, Robin’s attacks mainly focus on immobilizing opponents, throwing them around, or causing severe damage to their neck or spine.

Although she is very powerful, her replicated body parts can be hit and stretched, causing damage to her real body; this is her weak point. Another weakness is that the strength possessed by the replicating appendages are basically no different to that of her actual limbs. When she fights, she focuses more on quantity than quality. So far, Robin has only been seen replicating her legs, eyes, and ears, but she most often replicates arms and hands.

It was stated in the manga’s side note by Eiichiro Oda that she can only duplicate up to 200 copies of any body part as the limitation of her power, but anime filler has gone against this. In the fourth One Piece movie, Dead End Adventure, Robin created several thousand copies of her arms to form a giant arm to pull Going Merry toward safety.

Robin is also a skilled archaeologist with a vast knowledge of history and cultures. She is thought to be the only one left in the world who can read the language scripted on poneglyph tablets, which contain records of ancient history. She taught most of these skills herself through the research in the library of Ohara, during her childhood. Lastly, she has shown to be quite agile, though her agility, strength, and speed are only relevant to a woman her size, age, and build. Unlike some of the other Straw Hats, she has neither superhuman strength or speed.

In a recent chapter of One Piece, it is revealed that Robin can fly by creating wings composed of 50 arms each from her back with her Cien Fleur move (literally 100 Flowers), even while carrying a passenger such as Franky. However, she can only do this very briefly, for about 5 seconds.

Tony Tony Chopper (Tonī Tonī Choppā?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. He is the fifth member and the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates.

He is the Straw Hat crew’s general physician despite being a reindeer. After a set of unusual circumstances, he ate the Hito Hito no Mi (Human Human Fruit), which permitted him the ability to speak, think, and (to a limited extent) change into a human. One of the most innocent Straw Hat Pirates, Chopper is also very naïve, resulting in a tendency to believe anything told to him, even the outrageously fictitious, exaggerated lies of Usopp.

Chopper’s left antler has a metal plate wrapped around it at all times. He originally broke it while retrieving the mushroom for Doctor Hiruluk. It is unknown how his left antler manages to transform during his transformations; given that they disappear completely during his human form, one can assume the devil fruit’s power is capable of doing this.

Chopper’s reindeer appearance often comes in handy. Enemies will usually assume he is just a pet when they haven’t actually interacted with him. This was especially useful in Alabasta, when he played an instrumental role in Sanji breaking the others out of Rain Dinners.

The name “Tony Tony Chopper” is partly a play on “Tonakai” (”Reindeer”), and partly on the idea that his horns look like they could chop down trees, according to Hiruluk.

In Japanese Fan Polls, Chopper is constantly the fourth most popular character. He’s in fifth place in the 4Kids poll. His birthday is Christmas Eve.

Oda has stated that he uses the color pink to represent Chopper, and (Oda was answering the questions as Chopper) for his smell, “how am I supposed to know?”.

Chopper is a bit naive and is missing a bit of toughness and often acts like a child, but an upright friend and companion who will try anything to overcome a task given by his team. He also still has distrust of humankind because of his youth and will often outright insult a human who compliments him while smiling, dancing, and being obviously pleased. Chopper also shows a certain interest in books, but mostly medicine related ones.

Chopper is more or less on a journey to define himself, seeing almost anybody on his crew as a role model. This, combined with his naivety, often causes him to imitate the other Straw Hats’ actions, no matter how obviously silly. Because of this, he often gets involved in the crazy antics of Luffy and Usopp, wholeheartedly believing that what they are doing is sensible and fun.

Chopper is also a thankful listener to Usopp’s lies, most of which he really believes, at least for a short time after he hears them. Robin calls him “Doctor-san” which makes him dance in joy. Luffy originally didn’t know that Chopper was a doctor. When asked why he recruited him, then, Luffy responded, “Seven level transformation. Cool reindeer,” and Sanji said, “Emergency food supply.”

Despite his strength, Chopper is rather hapless, and copes with stressful situations nearly as badly as Usopp. When Chopper recognizes someone who needs medical attention he often will start to run around screaming for a doctor, before realizing that he is one.

Another one of Chopper’s habits is his reverse cartoon peek where he’s standing behind a wall or doorway and peeks at people, trying not to be seen by them. Unfortunately he’s not hiding his body behind the wall, as a result his body is visible and only one half of his face is hidden. A running gag is that various though random characters in One Piece think Chopper is a Tanuki whilst in his Brain Point form. His Heavy Point form likewise is mistaken for a gorilla or an abominable snowman.

In any case, due to the fact he is commonly in his brain point or walk point, he is often treated as the crew’s pet. This attribute to the fact that he only got 50 Beli (”berries” in the English manga) for his bounty.

Note: In the English dub by 4Kids, he refrains from using curse words and often just acts happier than normal, or he calls the other character(s) “punks” (though the latter is only done in One Piece: Pirates Carnival).

Most people call him Chopper, however Nefertari Vivi calls him “Tony-kun”, and Nico Robin refers to him as “Sen’i-san” (”Mr. Ship’s-Doctor”).

Chopper’s dream is to cure all disease.

Chopper was originally a reindeer with the slight oddity of a blue nose, which caused other reindeer to treat him as an outcast (always making him follow the herd from far back). However, when the young reindeer ate the Hito Hito no Mi, he was even more ostracized from his herd (and with the increase in intelligence granted by the fruit, now acutely aware of it) and struck out on his own.

Unfortunately for Chopper, his attempts at communicating with the humans on Drum Island proved disastrous, and he was shot by villagers who mistook him for The Abominable Snowman. Luckily, though, he was rescued by the quack Dr. Hiriluk (Hiruluk in the Japanese version), who named him and took him in as his friend and ‘assistant.’ Although his deeds were of dubious medical value, Dr. Hiriluk became Chopper’s role-model. Hiriluk taught Chopper his philosophy on life (that all diseases could be cured) and his strong faith in the Jolly Roger as a symbol of strength against all odds.

The two went from house to house, administering their “cures” in a country where all doctors not sanctioned by King Wapol were banned.

When Hiriluk’s health took a turn for the worse, however, Chopper found himself left out in the cold once again as the old man didn’t want Chopper to watch him die. But once Chopper found out what was going on, he was determined that he would find something to cure his mentor and only friend.

He soon found what he was looking for: a special kind of mushroom with a skull-and-crossbones prominently displayed in the medical book, unaware of what that sign really meant due to Hiriluk’s praising of pirates. Remembering what he overheard by some villagers that certain special type of mushroom can heal every illness, Chopper steals Hiriluk’s favorite medical book to find the miracle mushroom. Chopper’s arduous journey was a success, although he risked his life and suffered many injuries, such as a broken left antler.

Hiriluk overwhelmed with tears of gratitude, ate the mushroom to show his love and appreciation to Chopper, but Chopper would later find out from Dr. Kureha that he had given Dr. Hiriluk a fatal dose of poison. But Hiriluk was not to live much longer, anyway. Declaring that he had had a wonderful life, he committed suicide by blowing himself up outside of Drum Castle (before being killed by the poison, for Chopper’s sake), where he wanted to heal the sick before he died.

As per Hiriluk’s last wish, Dr. Kureha (the last remaining doctor not owned by King Wapol) took Chopper in and taught him ‘real’ medicine for the next 6 years. Chopper worked as hard as he could, in order to become a doctor like his idol, Hiruluk.

However, Chopper’s isolated life in Drum Castle (which he and Dr. Kureha annexed after the King Wapol fled) would one day come to an end with the arrival of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew. Chopper, naturally distrustful of humans, was not pleased, especially given Luffy and Sanji’s desire to cook and eat him.

But when Chopper showed both his medical powers and his skills in battle against the returned forces of King Wapol, Luffy offered (forced) him the (as-yet unfilled) position of Ship’s Doctor in his crew. While Chopper was at first unwilling to leave, he remembered Dr. Hiruluk wishing Chopper to sail around and seeing the world on his own and with his desire to broaden his medical horizons, he decides to join Luffy and his crew.

Fleeing the castle with the Straw Hat Pirates, Chopper was given a send-off of gigantic proportions: Kureha had turned the snow into Sakura blossoms, and the cliff where the castle stood became the sakura tree the very same that Hiruluk had researched over 30 years that would one day, cure the people of Drum of their “sickness of the heart”, passed to Dr. Kureha as one of his last request before death. Overcome with tears, Chopper made a fond farewell to his birthplace and mentors, setting out to sea for the first time in his life.

Chopper was originally abandoned by his family for being different, and being with humans was the same. Chopper’s first friends (other than the people who raised him) were the Straw Hats, which opened him up to the world.

Aboard the Going Merry, Chopper was quickly thrust into battle against the forces of Baroque Works, on the island of Alabasta. While unused to the heat, Chopper was instrumental in getting the assistance of the island’s animals and defeating the Mr. 4 / Miss Merry Christmas team.

As time would go on, Chopper would become a vital aspect of the crew, treating their injuries and keeping their spirits up with his constant amazement at the variety and wonder of the world.

As of late, he continues to be faithful to his crew and dispense valuable medical assistance, he was badly shaken when Usopp chose to leave. Panicked and saddened by this development, it was all Chopper could do to leave behind some medical supplies to treat his former crewmate’s wounds, while he followed his captain into the Venetian-styled city of Water Seven.

He was instrumental in saving both Iceburg and Paulie from the destruction of Galley-La Company’s headquarters, and afterward expressed his determination to help retrieve Robin from the clutches of the World Government organization CP9. While Sanji succeeded in retrieving both Usopp and Franky the shipwright, Usopp is currently in the guise of Sogeking (a sharpshooting hero of Usopp’s own invention, from the Island of Snipers).

Despite the others immediately seeing through “Sogeking”, Chopper and Luffy do not recognize Sogeking as actually being Usopp (with Chopper even asking for his autograph). Usopp does not seem to want Chopper to know the truth yet, and guards his disguise carefully. Chopper’s Monster Point defeats his CP9 opponent with ease.

Chopper received his first bounty of 50 Beli, and the only reason he got it is due to the fact that he is a “pet” of Straw Hats. This possibly gave him the smallest active bounty of all time. Chopper is shocked that his bounty is so small, since he believed he fought like a man.

When Garp attacks and Usopp tries to rejoin, Chopper was the only one who didn’t deny his attention.

Chopper stayed on the Thousand Sunny with Robin, Zoro, Franky and Usopp while Luffy, Sanji and Nami investigated a ghost ship discovered in the Florian Triangle, the ‘cursed zone’ on the way to Merman Island. When Brook the abrasive skeleton musician arrived on the ship, Chopper joined Usopp in trying to exorcise him with various (utterly useless) chants and religious icons.

Along with Nami and Usopp, he is currently trapped on Thriller Bark, the ‘Ghost Island’, after crashing into it on one of the Thousand Sunny’s landing craft; escaping from the island’s three-headed watchdog by hiding in a tree, he reacts with shock to the name of the island’s supervisor - Dr. Hogback.

He reveals that Dr. Hogback is a famous doctor, who disappeared ages ago, and had since become legend. He is excited at the chance to meet his idol in person, but his plans seem squashed when Nami and Usopp request that Hogback’s assistant, Hildon, return them to their ship. Chopper argues, but eventually gives in, and the group rides on for ten minutes. Hildon suddenly leaves the coach, and the group finds themselves in a graveyard surrounded by zombies bursting from the earth.

They flee to Hogback’s mansion, where Chopper happily says that he gets to see Dr. Hogback after all. Later, Chopper helps save Nami by smelling out the invisible man that attacked her. Once inside the mansion, Chopper ends up meeting Hogback, but becomes disturbed when he sees his idol being reduced to bringing the dead back to life as opposed to healing the sick such as a doctor should do. After further discovering more secrets within the mansion, Hogback dispatches Ryuma, a samurai zombie, to slice them all down.

Seemingly defeated, the trio are moved out of the mansion by more zombie servants, but Chopper and the others escape until they find themselves confronted by a platoon of animal zombies, who quickly knock out Chopper and Usopp.

Suddenly Absalom and Lola appears in the garden and Chopper flees from Lola with Usopp and Nami. next they are seen hiding in Bearsy. They witness the removol of Luffy’s shadow and the implanting of it in Oz at which point Chopper freaks out. Having been discovered they take off but Chopper and Ussopp are taken down by Absalom and Nami is kidnapped.

Zombie’s close in on Chopper and Ussop until Franky and Robin show up. Chopper, Usopp, Robin, and Franky have reach the Thousand Sunny and wake up Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. They are now mounting an attack on Thriller Bark to save Nami and defeat Moria. In Chapter 461, Chopper has begun fighting Hogback, claiming that the former doctor is no longer his idol.

Sanji (Sanji?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga One Piece. He is the fourth member and the chef of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Sanji is the chain-smoking chef of the Straw Hat Pirate Crew and currently holds a bounty of 77 million Beli. He has superb fighting skills that only make use of his legs, in an effort to minimize damage to his hands, which would impair his cooking skills. Sanji uses an array of powerful and varied kicking moves when he fights. His cooking skills are world class, and he was mentored in both cooking and fighting by Chef “Red Leg” Zeff of the Baratie. He was born in the North Blue, but grew up in the East Blue. According to Oda, Sanji most resembles a duck., is identified by the color blue, and smells of seafood and cigarettes.

In the original Japanese manga, the Japanese anime, and the English manga, Sanji is a chain smoker. In the English anime, Sanji instead sucks on lollipops (most likely so that kids wouldn’t try smoking).

In the English-language manga, Sanji often uses “Crap” as an adjective while speaking. This is an attempt to convey both his extremely coarse speaking style in Japanese, as well as his use of “kuso” (roughly “feces”) as an expletive; fans often translate it as “shit” because of his manner of speech. For example, he often calls Zeff “Kuso-Jiji” (roughly “shitty-geezer). In the English anime, he simply calls Zeff “old-geezer” or “old fart” (in fansubs, he is also referred to by this name), and “crap-geezer” in the English manga.

Also, in the 4Kids Dub, Sanji appears to have a nasally Brooklyn accented voice (done by David Moo).

Sanji is trash-talking and serious, and usually gruff and impatient, especially around men. This is contrasted by his “love-cook” side, as he is very amorous around women. When Sanji sees a beautiful lady, he usually loses all common sense and composure in front of them, comically swooning and making many passionate declarations of love towards the woman while cartoony hearts float in the air and appear in his eye (This is mostly displayed when being near or talking to Nami or Robin).

But in episode 184, when rescuing Nami from Enel, Sanji says to Usopp that he would gladly give his life for her. Usopp then asks Sanji if he loves her and Sanji quickly covers with “I’d gladly give your life”. This behavior has earned him the nickname “ero-cook”, or perverted cook. Around women, he is incredibly chivalrous and gentlemanly, volunteering to help them in various tasks and situations, whether they need help or not. He also never refuses a request asked by a lady, and has sworn to never let insult or injury happen to a woman while he can still stand, even if that woman is trying to kill him.

This is often problematic in his fighting as he can’t attack female opponents, and would rather die than hurt them. All this is apparently the result of a “strict upbringing”. To contradict his gentlemanly behavior, Sanji also enjoys seeing women wear skimpy clothing and can be a voyeur. For example, he asks Igaram where the women’s bath is during the Alabasta arc so he could peek at Nami and Vivi.

Sanji is the crew’s chef and and as such he looks out for the health of his crewmates. His goal in life is to find the All Blue (Great Blue in the 4Kids Dub), a legendary ocean which contains all the fish in the world, and as such would be paradise for any devoted cook. Sanji holds great respect for the tools, ingredients, and art of cooking, to the point where he never refuses food to any starving people, no matter how poor or evil they may be.

He also dislikes leftovers immensely and will show anger towards anyone who leaves them. Sanji is also very proud of the meals he makes and considers them works of art; if anyone insults them, he will promptly beat up the offender.

Sanji respects Luffy as a captain, but often gets angry at him for eating too much, showing disrespect for the aesthetics of cooking, and generally being daft and irresponsible. He is constantly in petty fights with Zoro (sometimes calling him Marimo) over each others’ traits and they have developed a rivalry, but have managed to make a devastating team together.

He is very protective of the female crewmembers and Nami likes to take advantage of him, exploiting his extreme servility. Sanji originally wanted to cook Chopper, but has come to respect him as a crewmember and friend. He’s also good friends with Usopp; they team up and interact often, and Sanji understands him quite well. In short, he cares as much for the crew as any Straw Hat should, but unlike Zoro, Sanji shows these feelings more. For example, he cried when Mr. 2 seemingly died protecting the Straw Hats from the Marines

Sanji likes to give himself nicknames in battles (such as Mr. Prince or Hunter) to hide his identity, and he often acts behind the scenes. In battles, he typically manipulates things from the background and then appears in the front lines at a very crucial moment. However, before Enies Lobby he was constantly upset that he hadn’t earned a bounty yet, which gave him a bit of a disadvantage in his arguments with Zoro since Zoro already had a very high bounty.

Even though he has a bounty now, it is still less than Zoro’s bounty (although, his first bounty is higher than Zoro’s first bounty and subsequent increase). This, combined with the fact that his wanted poster only shows a bad facial composite of him continues the running gag of him not being recognized. For example, in the Enies Lobby arc, after the Rocketman sea train flies over the second gate, Zoro and Sanji go against the Marines. During the battle, the Marines don’t recognize Sanji (who that time did not have a bounty) Zoro teases him as Pirate A (or Pirate B).

Sanji’s left eye is never seen in the Manga, always covered by his hair. Some anime-frames however show it, possibly by mistake. It can also be seen in the Doctor Stop card in the One Piece CCG Set 2, Passage to the Grand Line. In Chapter 419, Sanji was seen holding a spyglass to his left eye.

Sanji was Zeff’s protégé and sous-chef, and the two had a long history together. Nine years earlier, a young Sanji was working as a cruise ship’s trainee cook in the North Blue. Even at that young age, he still dreamed of finding the All Blue, though all of the other cooks told him that the All Blue was only a myth, and only a hopeless dreamer would try to find it. He also hated eating leftover foods from customers, and didn’t understand why his fellow cooks would even consider lowering themselves to eat other people’s scraps.

One day, the pirate Red “Leg” Zeff and his crew attacked the ship. Even though he was virtually powerless against them, Sanji fought and futilely tried to kill Zeff. When the pirates beat him up, he said that he had a dream to find the All Blue, and thus wouldn’t let a bunch of pirates kill him.

This comment results in an outburst of laughter by the pirates. The chefs were simply exasperated that Sanji could still talk about a supposed myth at such a time. However, Sanji’s speech impresses Zeff, who, despite being a pirate, believed no one deserved to starve, attacked crewmates that stole food, and also secretly dreamed about finding the All Blue. When both ships sink in a sudden storm, Zeff decides to save Sanji from drowning and the two were washed onto a rock outcropping, high above the sea. They were the only survivors.

Despite their good fortune, there was little food for them: a few rations had washed onto the rock with them, but there was no vegetation, no animals, and no way to reach the water to fish. Splitting up what little rations remained, Zeff ordered Sanji to sit at the other end of the island, and look for a ship. Sanji protested that Zeff was keeping a large sack for himself, but Zeff brushed him off, saying that as an adult, his stomach was bigger.

Days passed. Sanji had no more food, but there was still no sign of a ship. Starving, he remembered his last day on the cruise ship when he had refused and thrown away leftovers and mocked his fellow cooks for eating them. Now understanding why they did so, he cried with regret at the memory. Many weeks afterward (the exact amount of time differs between the manga and anime), an emaciated Sanji decided to take a chance and kill Zeff for his food. When he slashed open the older man’s sack, however, he discovered it had no food inside, only treasure.

To his horror, he realized that Zeff had given Sanji all of his food and eaten his own leg to survive (in the anime, he lost it while saving Sanji after becoming entangled in one of the wrecked ships, and simply ate nothing). When Sanji tearfully asked why he had given all of his food to a boy who had done nothing for him and even tried to kill him, Zeff said it was because they shared the same dream of finding the All Blue. He told Sanji that his crewmates were good people, even if they didn’t believe in the All Blue, and that his dream was to sail the Grand Line with them until he found the All Blue.

Now that his crewmates were dead, however, Zeff didn’t want to be a pirate anymore, and instead planned to fulfill his other dream of creating a floating restaurant to help the starving if they ever got off the island. Wracked with guilt and gratitude, Sanji promised that if they were rescued, he would help Zeff build the restaurant on the water so those at sea would not have to go hungry.

Soon after, a ship appeared, and they were rescued. Eventually, they would build and run the Baratie, the world’s only floating restaurant. Because of this ordeal, Sanji pledges to never refuse food to a starving individual, no matter how evil or poor they may be. He also dislikes leftovers immensely and will show great anger to those who leave them.

On the Baratie, Zeff and Sanji shared an uneasy relationship, frequently getting into arguments and exchanging insults. Sanji would call Zeff an “Old Fart” or “Shitty-Geezer”, (”Crap-Geezer” and “Old Geezer” in North America) and in return, Zeff would call Sanji a “stupid eggplant” (”Under-done Eggplant” or “String Bean” in North America) and tell him his cooking was awful. He started smoking at age 10, very shortly after the Baratie was founded, in an attempt to prove his “maturity” to Zeff. This scene was cut from all versions of the anime.

Yet for all that, Sanji remained faithful to his promise nine years before, and risked his life to help defend the restaurant he helped build from the clutches of Don Krieg and his pirate armada. With the help of Monkey D. Luffy, he succeeded, but was unwilling to leave his position at Baratie to become Luffy’s cook. In the end, Zeff had to remind him of the dream they both shared: to find the legendary sea, All Blue.

Tearfully thanking the old man for everything, Sanji departed with Luffy to retrieve Nami, who had stolen the Going Merry and was making her way to the stronghold of the merman pirate, Arlong.

Recently, Sanji helped cook for the festival the Strawhats and allies were having, which incidentally drained almost all of their remaining Beli. In Chapter 435 he received his first bounty of 77 Million Beli and is nicknamed “Black Leg”, in contrast to his old mentor Zeff, who was known as “Red Leg”.

However, Sanji is horrified to see his picture on the bounty poster. The Marines were unable to obtain a photo of him (because the photographer forgot to take off the lens cap) and thus used a horrendous composite sketch instead. Upon seeing the poster, all of the Baratie’s chefs expressed great pride that their sous-chef had become a famous pirate, and declared that from then on, they would be handing out his wanted poster to all of their customers.

He went to investigate the ghost ship with Nami and Luffy. While Brook fascinated Luffy with his strangeness and angered Nami with his pervertedness, Sanji was weirded out and furiously bombarded the skeleton with questions. He helped fight an invisible creature that was attacking the Straw Hats on the Thousand Sunny.

After he and the Straw Hats left the ship, they encountered Cerberus. Sanji calmly warned Cerberus that it should stay in hell for its own safety. Along with Zoro, Sanji later discourages Luffy from asking a couple of zombies to join their crew. While in Hogback’s mansion Sanji disappears. Later, a zombie resembling a penguin-English-bulldog cross appears and saves Nami from an attacking zombie. The zombie has Sanji’s personality, speech pattern, and fighting style; however, the zombie states that he doesn’t know who Nami is or where she came from, suggesting that Sanji has had his shadow stolen.

Sanji is later seen on the thousand sunny, with Luffy and Zoro, sleeping and was woken by Usopp of whom states that a beautiful lady swordsman carrying lots of meat had just arrived. After waking up he is told that Nami is going to get married, which angers him, he is also told the weakness of the zombies and of Brooke’s relationship with Laboon. He is currently planning an attack on Thriller Bark with the rest of the crew. He later reached the alter where Absalom was having the wedding. He proceeded to rescue Nami and then, in rage at all of the dastardly actions by Absalom (including him peeking at Nami in the shower), he began to beat up Absalom.

He even caught him with a kick while Absalom was invisible using Usopp’s salt to discover Absalom’s whereabouts. Sanji then reveals that he also has a grudge against Absalom because he has eaten the Suke Suke no Mi, a Devil Fruit. Sanji tells him that out of all the Devil Fruits he had read about he never saw any worth giving up the ability to swim except for that fruit which he would gladly give up his swimming ability for. He states that he wanted to use it to peek on girls. Sanji then defeats Absalom stating that with all the different animal parts he is comprised of that he would make a good dish. Sanji defeats Absalom in chapter 464.

Sanji is a powerful martial artist with superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. He is the third strongest member of the Straw Hat crew, after Zoro and Luffy. Sanji has mastered Red Leg, a style of combat which focuses entirely on the use of one’s legs. Sanji’s leg strength is great enough to smash through rock and defeat monstrous beasts in a single blow. He’s also shown to be very acrobatic, using flips and handstands in his fighting.

Red Leg is a fictional unarmed martial art which strictly uses the lower body and legs in combat, which Sanji takes to the extreme, often leaving his hands in his pockets while fighting. The style’s name is taken from the title of pirate “Red Leg” Zeff, Sanji’s mentor and developer of the style. Red Leg possesses a variety of special attacks, most of which are simply exceptionally powerful kicks.

These techniques are named in French, and generally refer to food puns or the part of the body Sanji is attacking. In the English anime, the attack names are changed to be funny sounding, non-existent food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.

In addition to his normal kicks, Sanji recently revealed a potent special form named Diable Jambe , which involves rotating his leg at high speeds, heating his leg via friction until it glows red-hot. Sanji’s kicks are enhanced by the fiery heat, and any opponent who fails to dodge his attacks will be burnt to the bone, regardless of their defensive techniques.

When series author Eiichiro Oda was asked to explain why Sanji doesn’t feel the heat, he replied that Sanji’s heart burns even hotter, but this was most likely a joke on Oda’s part. Another possible explanation is that as a cook, Sanji is able to withstand high temperatures. Regardless of the cause, neither Sanji nor his clothes were burned when using Diable Jambe.

As an expert cook, Sanji is capable of preparing almost any kind of food and holding a strong sense to the aesthetics of cooking. This is also the reason for his fighting style: to avoid the hand-damage that would impair his cooking skills. Despite this, Sanji is also skilled in fighting with kitchen knives, which he used against Wanze, a chef who used ramen armour in combat.

He justified the action by saying that the fight involved a chef using food attacks and took place in a kitchen; therefore, kitchen implements were fair weapons. Finally, Sanji has a talent for strategy and can often be found working in the background separate from the rest of the crew to foil enemy plans.

Usopp (Usoppu?) is a fictional character from the anime and manga One Piece. He is the marksman and the third member of Straw Hat Pirates to join the crew.

Usopp’s name is probably based on “Isoppu”, which is the Japanese pronunciation of Aesop, the ancient Greek fabulist. Considering that “uso” means “lie” in Japanese, the name Usopp can (and is most likely meant to) be taken as a portmanteau name between uso and Isopp, both defining a liar or teller of tall tales (for example, when introducing himself, Usopp is known to say “Ore wa Usopp!” which can mean either “I am Usopp!” or “I am a liar!”).

Usopp’s long nose is an allusion to Pinocchio, a wooden boy who possessed a nose that would stretch after he lied. His nose is nine inches long, and according to Mr. 2 Bon Clay’s standards, Usopp possesses the world’s weirdest/funniest nose. Oda claims that Usopp is most represented by the armadillo.[1] Oda has also said that he uses the color yellow to represent Usopp, and he smells of gunpowder. [2]

The other aspect of Usopp besides his lying is his cowardice; he is a very timid person, or so he thinks. (He is constantly ailed by illnesses such as I-can’t-go-on-that-scary-island disease.) In extremely stressful situations, Usopp has proven to be far more courageous than he believes himself to be.

He shows great resolve when his friends are threatened or mocked by outsiders. Even though he is a complete coward in battle (except as his alter ego, Sogeking), he is a useful part to the Straw Hat Pirates. He is extremely handy and can fix almost anything. He is also a talented artist, a skill he claimed he got drawing on walls as a kid.

Despite his lack of physical strength compared to other members of the crew, Usopp seems to be just as resilient (if not more so) as his comrades. He suffers injuries in almost every fight he participates in, but shrugs them off after a very short period of time. Part of this is the result of care by the Straw Hats’ very capable doctor, yet some of this appears to be a natural ability to absorb punishment, for the sake of comedy relief.

(Indeed, he once was hit in the head by Mr 4’s 4-ton baseball bat, only to stand up seconds later. Miss Merry Christmas commented that he should not even be alive.)

His goal in life is to become a proud and strong pirate like his father Yasopp of the Red Haired Pirate Crew.

According to a recent Japanese fan poll, Usopp is the 6th most popular character; he has the same rank in 4Kids polls.

Usopp is a liar and likes to play pranks on his crew members or just goof off with Luffy and Chopper. He also likes to tell tall tales with Chopper (or Kaya when he started with it) as thankful listeners. He sometimes sees a role model in Zoro who never seems afraid but always proud. Usopp lacks a bit of self esteem and is often taken advantage of by Nami to make her weapons or repair and improve them - something he is very adept at, having constructed the ingenious weapon, the Clima Tact (Weather Forcer in the 4Kids Dub).

Usopp is easily scared and always tries to make up excuses so he does not have to go on an island, which are simply ignored by his teammates. Despite his timid nature, he realizes when his friends need him and will do anything to help them, even if it means to stand up to a disproportionately more powerful enemy and be severely pummelled. Usopp will also stand up and fight for not only the well-being of people, but also the ideals of them - and the ideals of a pirate, which he holds very high.

In battle he normally tries to trick his enemies by telling tales or deceiving them. His ability to bear loads and loads of damage is one of his best traits, in addition to his cunning and intelligence which have saved the Straw Hats on many occasions. Also he proved to be very brave during the Enies Lobby arc; he stood up to Jabura, and later Lucci after he had seemingly beaten Luffy, proving that he was not afraid to die for his crewmates, and it was he who destroyed the World Governments flag and defended Nico Robin on the bridge by acting as sniper.

In the Post-Water 7 Events, Ussop had demonstrated been more mature and been capable to stop to lie, and to accept him in the way he is. No matter he’s still a coward, he accepted he’s a coward, highly depressive and somewhat negative, in a level he’s capable to use that in his own advantage. In the Thriller Bark Arc for example, he didn’t use his typical excuse of “Been-uncapable-to-landing” sickness, and, for his negative personality, he’s immune to the Negative Effects of Perona’s Ghosts.

After meeting the giants Dorry and Broggy in the Little Garden arc, Usopp wants to travel to Elbaf one day and meet the proud warriors there. Usopp often sees the Elbaf warriors he has met in his travels as sources of inspiration in his journey to become a brave warrior of the sea; A dream spurred on by his cowardly nature, and his recent feelings of inferiority compared to the other crewmembers.

Usopp called himself a pirate and took in three younger kids, Ninjin (meaning “Carrot” in Japanese. Renamed Carrot in the dub), Tamanegi (meaning Onion in Japanese, Renamed Onion in the dub), and Piiman (meaning Pepper in Japanese. Renamed Pepper in the dub), as his “crew”; he dubs the groups “Usopp’s Pirates”, or in the American version by 4Kids, the “Veggie Pirates”.

Usopp is the son of Yasopp, a pirate who is part of Red-Haired Shanks’ crew. Yasopp left Usopp and his mother to become a pirate when Usopp was still very young. This caused Usopp to develop a fascination with pirates and high seas adventures.

It is revealed later on by Kaya’s butler Merry why Usopp started lying. A couple of years after his father had left them, Usopp’s mother became sick and was slowly dying. Usopp begun to lie to keep his mother’s spirit up, often saying that Yassop and his pirate crew had come to town to take them with him on his journey.

Even after she died Usopp continued to run throughout the town yelling that pirates were coming. Merry believed that there were no cruel intentions in these lies, they were just manifestations of Usopp’s own longing for high seas adventure.

Many of the villagers would make a show of chasing him and throwing things at him for his antics but all of them had actually become use to it. Some villagers even use his daily run through town as a sort of alarm clock. He also made up stories about his fake adventures to entertain his best friend, a young girl named Kaya, a rich orphan who was sick and bedridden .

Ironically, most of the tall tales he told Kaya have came true at some point during the Straw Hats’ voyage. These include meeting a Giant Goldfish (as the crew was leaving Little Garden) and fighting against a giant mole (against Ms. Merry Christmas during the climax in the Alabasta arc), and recently facing a cerberus. Perhaps one day he will actually get 8,000 followers and become a captain.

When the Black Cat pirates came to town, Usopp, along with Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro and Nami, fought the pirates and their leader, Captain Kuro, who had spent three years posing as a caretaker for Kaya.

After Luffy defeats Kuro and the Black Cat Pirates, Usopp disbands “Usopp’s Pirates” and leaves them to take his place as the town liars. He was going to set off to sea on his own adventures when Luffy invited him to join his crew on the Going Merry, a ship given to Luffy by Kaya. Luffy later gave him the title of sniper for the crew as he had inherited his father’s sharp shooting skills. He was also the one who designed and painted the Straw Hat skull and crossbones on the Going Merry’s flag and sail after seeing Luffy’s poorly drawn version. Usopp has tried several times to claim the position of “Captain”, much to Luffy’s objection.

Reaching their second island on the Grand Line, Little Garden, meant a somewhat of a change for Usopp. The island’s inhabitants, the giants Dorry and Brogi, fascinated Usopp. They have fought for a century; their never-ending battle for nothing, a battle of pride and honor which are more important than their own lives - a battle of men, as Usopp defined it, amazed him.

According to him, they are exactly what he wanted to be, the greatest warrior of the seas; to a point where he says that one day he will die with pride, and his last words will be “I am Usopp, the great warrior of the sea!”. Usopp was moved to rage when he had discovered that the sake which came from their ship, which they gave to Dorry and Brogi, exploded and interrupted the battle, and even attempted to attack Mr. 5, knowing the risk. He still wishes to visit Elbaf, the island the giants came from, and the scene of him saying that was constantly featured after Water 7’s events.

After the battle with Aokiji, Usopp watched his friends get easily beaten which scares him and makes him question his belonging in the crew. He was afraid that the crew had begun encountering stronger adversaries and as the Straw Hat’s weakest fighter, he started to lose confidence in his abilities. A series of conflicts, particularly Luffy’s choice to get a new ship, results in Usopp leaving the crew. After a battle with Luffy, where Usopp displayed an uncharacteristically vicious fighting style, he gained the now terminally-damaged Going Merry. Usopp was later detained by CP9.

After being freed from CP9 captivity by Sanji during the Sea train chase, Usopp announced that he has no business with the Straw Hat Pirates and disappears. Yet Usopp came back a minute later in a disguise. He was wearing a mask and a cape, using the alias “Sogeking” (sogeki means sniper, so Sogeking (Sogekingu) is a pun meaning “Sniper King”, which is only pushed further when the World Gov. nicknames him “King of Snipers” Sogeking). According to his stories, Sogeking is from an island of snipers, Sharpshooter Island, that can be found in your heart, and Usopp has even written a theme song for this identity.

All of the Straw Hats (along with Galley-La, Franky Family, and CP9) immediately recognize his true identity except for Luffy and Chopper. For a long time, it was unknown if Usopp was going to rejoin the crew. His motive for concealing his identity is both so that he will not become a fugitive with an inflated bounty over his head, as attacking the Marine Base would cause this subsequent action and to keep his identity a secret towards the crew (even if it only worked on Chopper and Luffy)

He helped Franky and Sanji in order to rescue Nico Robin but they fail to do so. After being in the detached cart 4 and 3 with Sanji, they were found by the Franky Family and finally reunited with Luffy. When they confronted CP9, Sogeking unveiled a new weapon, a long staff with a more powerful slingshot attached called “Kabuto”.

Although he was the only Straw Hat unable to defeat a major CP9 agent, he did burn down the World Government flag on Luffy’s command, signifying a declaration of war by the Straw Hats on the World Government . He also prevented the CP9 Chief Spandam from escaping with Nico Robin by sniping him from atop the Tower of Justice.

When first seen on his return to Water 7, Usopp was sitting on Oimo’s shoulder, questioning whether or not to follow the giants to Elbaf. When Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, paid a visit to his grandson, Usopp was peeking into the room along with Yokuzuna. Usopp is enjoying the large party in Water 7 along with everyone else, but as Sogeking.

He now has a bounty of 30 million, however as his alter ego Sogeking, now known as “Sogeking, King of Snipers”". Interestingly, this is Usopp’s third time appearing on a wanted poster with someone else’s name on it, as he is also on Luffy’s and Zoro’s.

While he wanted to rejoin the Straw Hats, he would prefer Luffy to beg him to rejoin. However, Zoro has already advised Luffy not to do so until Usopp apologized. Usopp believes the crew would still come and fetch him, but after Zoro’s speech the crew did not seek for him. During the bombardment of Garp on the Straw Hats, Usopp rushed back and saw the ship was leaving him behind.

As Usopp tries to call to the Straw Hats, they ignored and continued fighting Garp. Usopp finally realized his wrong, shouting out his apology and taking back his words of leaving his companions. At that note, Luffy heard him and tearfully stretched his arm to get him back on board.

Sogeking reappeared while Usopp was fighting Perona on Thriller Bark. Sogeking now acts as an alternate personality to Usopp which he uses to give him courage and strength that Usopp would not normally show.

He stayed on Thousand Sunny when Luffy, Sanji and Nami investigated the ghost ship. Upon seeing Brook, Usopp tried to exorcise him with a cross, until he learned that Brook wasn’t really undead.

Later, after becoming stranded on the island “Thriller Bark”, Nami & Chopper and Usopp haphazardly land on the island after taking a trip on a miniature version of the Going Merry. After crash landing in a moat, they are chased after by a Cerberus-like creature, and meet a fellow by the name of Hildon.

Hildon promises to take them to the mansion of Dr. Hogback, but strands them in the middle of a cemetery after Nami asks him to take them back to their ship. Zombies emerge from the ground, and after a short struggle, Usopp uses “Sure Kill: Flame Star” to try and take advantage of zombies weakness to fire. The attack proves too effective, and the zombies scold him for creating the blaze that follows. The three run from the remaining zombies (who prove surprisingly fast, yet are winded easily) and seek refuge in Dr. Hogback’s mansion.

They eat pudding with Hogback, and Usopp later saves Nami when she is attacked by an invisible creature in her bath. When the three discovered that Hogback was creating zombies, he sent the zombie samurai Ryuma after them. The three are easily defeated and carried away in a coffin, but they manage to escape from it. However, they end up in a garden filled with zombie animals, who quickly knock out Usopp and Chopper.

Suddenly Absalom and Lola appears in the garden and Usopp’s fleeing from Lola together with Nami and Chopper. They end up hiding in a stuffed bear zombie called Bearsy, who is a servant of Perona. There, they overhear the conversation between her and Absalom about the # 1000 zombie and the gathering of the “Mysterious Three.” The trio overhear Moria discussing plans with Luffy’s shadow.

They are present when Moria binds Luffy’s shadow to the # 1000 zombie. The trio freaks out, and blows their cover, but further distraction by the new zombie gives them an opportunity to flee. They make it to the peak of a large staircase, where Absalom, attacks Usopp and Chopper with a fire attack, appears and grabs Nami. Usopp pulls out Kabuto, to Chopper’s surprise, and attempts to hit Absalom with “Six Chamber Pit-Viper Star.” Absalom evades the attack by turning himself and Nami invisible.

Left alone, Chopper and Usopp are attacked by a horde of zombies, and are unable to resist their assault. They appear about to be captured once more, when Franky and Robin appear, and dispatch of the zombies, using the salt Brook gave them to remove their shadows. They apparently inform each other of what they’ve learned, and return to the Thousand Sunny, where they find Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji.

(All three are found sleeping in rather odd positions, apparently as a practical joke by the zombies)Usopp tries to wake them up, yelling that it isn’t a good time to be sleeping. This fails, so Usopp lies that “A Beautiful Lady Swordsman just arrived with a ton of meat!!!” causing all three to wake up. Usopp then goes with Franky, Zoro, and Sanji to rescue Nami from marrying Absalom. Currently, he is fighting Perona as he is the only person who is immune to her ghosts’ ability to sap courage out of their victims. Usopp reveals the reason they have no effect on him, is that he is (much to her shock) naturally pessimistic.

The fight with Perona continued when Usopp was led to a room where Perona had regained her composure with a new sense of confidence. The battle was tipping in Perona favor revealing that Usopp could not hit her and was suffering at the hands of Perona’s ghost and pet bear. When all hope for Usopp seemed lost he used his Sogeking persona to analyze the situation and found Perona’s weakness: a room that held her real body.

Usopp then shoots his ultimate strike, Super Explodng Star at her body, and to Perona’s relief, misses. Perona then sends her special hollow (witch is a macro version of the small ones) to latch onto Usopp. Perona then has the hollow explode, only for the impact to be absorbed by Usopp’s Impact Dial. Perona then tries to return to her body, only to be stuck by a sticky substance. Usopp then reveals that he lied about his last attack and that it was not his Super Exploding Star, but his Sticky Star attack.

It’s at this moment that Gallant Hippo appears, angered about the exorcism of Captain Kumashi. Usopp uses the Impact Dail on him as if it were nothing(or so he makes it look, he actually dislocates his shoulder) and then shoots his Sparkling Darkness Star(also known as Cockroach star) at Perona. This results in her being covered in cockroaches(which happen to be fake, but she falls for Usopp’s lie and believes they’re real) Usopp then pulls out a 10 TON hammer and attacks Perona.

As it hits it explodes, revealing it was nothing more then a balloon, but Perona passed out before the hit, believing she was going to die. As Usopp walks away he mocks her for not seeing the difference between a real 10 TON hammer and a fake one, same goes for his roaches. The last panel shows Usopp walking away stating that she didn’t know who she was dealing with when it comes to attacking with lies and deceptions.

Usopp has outstanding marksmanship abilities with his slingshot and is on his way to becoming one of the best snipers in the One Piece world. Usopp’s ammunition has great range, from rotten eggs and hot sauce to shuriken and powerful explosives. His attacks are named Stars (”Boshi” in the original), e.g. Powder Star. His greatest ability is perhaps an ability to outrun just about anyone or anything, including Fishmen.

He also can stand unbearable amounts of pain, as he was struck in the face with a 4-ton metal bat but resumed fighting minutes later. To compensate for his physical weakness, Usopp has developed tremendous tactical abilities, such as leading his opponent into explosive gas, throwing a bottle of wine to then burn the opponent and cleverly exploiting Mr. 4’s slow intellect. Like Nami, Usopp has defeated enemies far stronger than himself.

When defending the Going Merry in Enies Lobby, he joined in with Zoro and Sanji by shooting down an equal share of the cannon balls fired towards the ship, sometimes three simultaneously, demonstrating his level of skill and power has begun to rival the abilities of Zoro and Sanji in the earlier part of the series.

Usopp’s other weapons are usually only used for humor or bluffing, such as Usopp Noise (scratching a chalkboard, in the English dub it is called “Usopp Nail Scratch”) or Usopp 5 Ton Hammer (In truth, 2 kilograms but is built to seem like it weighs 5 tons), but makes good use of improvised weapons.

He has also recently started using Skypiean dials for attacks, such as using the Lamp Dial to blind his foes and the Impact Dial to absorb and reflect blows. He also is a capable inventor and invented the Clima-Tact for Nami and has over the course of the journey also made other gadgets. He used to act as the crew’s carpenter and would patch up the Going Merry every time she was damaged. However, with the events of Water 7, the loss of the Going Merry and the joining of Franky which coincides with them gaining a new ship, Usopp is no longer acting this part.

Usopp, as Sogeking, has recently introduced a new weapon - “Kabuto” - a slingshot connected to a long staff. The exact properties of the “Kabuto” are unknown, but he used it to launch a bird shaped flame at the World Government’s flag, in a symbolic gesture of defiance after Luffy asked him to.

It seems as if “Kabuto” uses several rubber bands attached to the five “prongs” of the weapon, making the shots somewhat faster and stronger. It is powered by dials; Usopp has used them often since Skypiea, and their presence is suggested by the weapon’s extremely high power and range. The weapon was named “Kabuto” probably because of the shape of the head of the staff resembles the trunk of a kabuto beetle. Usopp is shown using the “Kabuto” again in chapter 457 to rescue Nami from Absalom although he managed to escape. By chapter 465 during the fight with Perona, he said that it is powered by the Breath Dial. The power of the dial can be charged into the bullets, and when it is, the rapid rotation of the bullet can change its shape.

Usopp improves his sight with special goggles. He won an upgraded pair in Loguetown (by winning a duel against Daddy the Father), but the actual scene of him obtaining them was cut out in the 4Kids Entertainment dub. The scene was also absent in the original manga, as it was written for the anime as filler (in the manga, he simply purchases the goggles off-panel.)

Usopp also has one hidden talent - he seems to be a fairly competent artist. He painted the Strawhat’s Jolly Roger (both the flag and the larger one on the Going Merry’s sail) based on a crude design by Luffy which he greatly improved upon. He also designed a rejected Jolly Roger which was based on his likeness, as well as the emblem of the Usopp Pirates (Veggie Pirates in the English dub.) In the manga Usopp is often shown drawing or sketching in several title splash pages, though not in the context of the story. He claims that he honed his talent by painting walls as a kid.

Nami (Nami?) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series One Piece. Nami means “Wave” in Japanese. She is the navigator and the second member of Straw Hat Pirates to join the crew.

In a recent Japanese Fan Poll, Nami was ranked 7th most popular character. She is more popular in the United States, where a 4Kids fan poll ranked her the fourth most popular anime character.

Being a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, she has her own bounty of 16 million Belli. She is the first member of the Straw Hat Pirates to appear in the (anime) series, but the third to align herself with the crew, and the fifth to actually join. In the manga, she appears third.

Possibly one of the best (or even the best) navigators currently sailing the Grand Line, Nami is more-or-less in charge when the crew is sailing on the Going Merry (Merry Go in the English translations), somewhat fulfilling the roles of treasurer and quartermaster as well (mirroring real-life, where the quartermaster was more or less in charge on pirate ships and the captain being more of a strong fighter whom the crew could put their trust in).

Nami has a tattoo on her left shoulder which represents mikan and pinwheels (a homage to her past), where she used to have a tattoo for being a member of Arlong’s Crew. Near the beginning of the series, Nami wore thick, low cut leather boots and a simple blouse. However, during the Arlong Park arc and thereafter, Nami wore open-toed shoes and more revealing outfits (With the tattoo no longer being a secret). As of Chapter 435, Nami changed her shoes to high heeled boots. She usually pairs her tops with skirts with rings on them. Her overall physique matured suddenly (according to Oda, this is so because she is only 18 and still in her “growth phase”).

According to the author (in response to a fan’s question), Nami’s dress size was 34-22-34. The author has also replied to a fan’s question to saying that right now Nami’s measurements are as follows: Height 169 (5′6.5) B 95 W 55 H 85, though her breasts seem to grow and then “reset” throughout the arcs (this is much more obvious in the manga). He has also said that Nami resembles a cat, that he uses the color orange to represent her, and she smells of mikan and money.

Her nickname, “Cat Burglar”, comes from “dorobō neko”, which can also mean “manstealer” in Japanese.

Even before One Piece officially began, Oda had ideas for a Nami-like character.

In the original pilot for One Piece, Romance Dawn: version 1, there was a character called Silk, who was the daughter of a pirate and also abandoned when she was young. Appearance wise, Silk was almost exactly like Nami in both face and dress, although Silk had much longer hair. While some aspects of her personality were close to Nami’s, she was still very different.

In Romance Dawn: version 2 there was another Nami-like character called Ann. Ann, like Silk, had clothes similar to Nami’s. Ann’s personality was much closer to Nami’s, but it was still a long way off from the one Nami was ultimately given by Oda.

Along with Nico Robin, Chopper and Usopp , Nami is one of the smartest of the Straw Hats and the third smartest character during the East Blue saga according to Oda, the first being Ben Beckman of the Red-Haired pirates and the second being Captain Kuro. She is an excellent navigator and has the ability to recognize and analyze even the slightest changes in the weather through sheer intuition, thus saving the ship and the crew from the very unstable Grand Line weather on multiple occasions. She is also in charge of the money the crew has.

She respects Luffy’s qualities as a leader, but often gets angry of his irrational thinking and short attention span, but she trusts him deeply. Nami is almost always the one who gives orders on the ship (much to Zoro’s resentment) because of Luffy’s usual lack of common sense. She often comically beats or hits her other crewmates for their nonsense, which occurs quite often. Acting as the “mother” of the crew, Nami doesn’t understand or approve of the boys’ often macho attitudes and principles.

These are the only situations where Nami doesn’t get the final word, as seen when she tried to talk sense into Luffy and Usopp’s great fallout. Nami is good friends with Nico Robin, the only other female and sensible person currently on the Straw Hat crew. Robin is the only person Nami doesn’t try to boss, and Nami has stated that Robin is the only person who understands her, though in a comical fashion.

Nami is greedy and will do anything, aside from endangering her friends, for money, due to her past - After having gathered money for 8 years (and even before that often stole things), Nami is naturally accustomed to it, stating that after being freed from Arlong, the money is all hers nows, but thinks of her friends as more important.

(While on Sky Island, Luffy asks her, “What’s more important, adventure or your life?” She responds, “My life. Followed by my money.”) She is very manipulative and often takes advantage of Sanji for his devotion to her and Usopp to maintain her weapons. Roronoa Zoro manages not to fall for her deception, but ends up a victim like the rest, usually due to debt and blackmail. Nami also tries to avoid fights, and is one of the less adventurous and brave members of the crew.

However, since the invention of her Clima Tact (A weapon that forms weather patterns, also called the Weather Forcer in the English dub), she is now seen fighting her own battles instead of becoming the ‘easy target’, as she doesn’t want to be the one being saved anymore.

Her two favorite things are money and mikan (mandarin oranges), often translated to tangerines (the English manga uses “tangerines”), because of her love of her foster mother, Bellemere. It seems she is more fond of her orange trees than the money; when the crew returned to Water 7 and had their belongings returned to them, Nami was overjoyed at seeing the trees that she hugged one of the tree with tears coming out of her eyes, but did not hug the money like she usually does. And when Franky was talking about what he did with the 200 million belies that he stole Nami didn’t seem as upset. This hints at the possibility that she is becoming less greedy.

Nami’s dream is to draw a perfect map of the world, a task not yet accomplished by anyone due to the harsh nature of the oceans in Grand Line. The first map Nami plotted was the island Cocoyashi village is on.

Nami also has an obsession with fashion, as she is never seen wearing the same clothes. This was not present in the early chapters and started after the Captain Kuro arc. This is similar to Bulma, the main female character of Dragon Ball (Eiichiro Oda’s favorite manga), who is never seen with the same hairstyle. Nami also appears to have an inhumanly high tolerance for alcohol, even more so than Roronoa Zoro. In Whiskey Peak, she was seen out-drinking 14 different Baroque Works members, losing only because she pretended to collapse in order to fool the bounty hunters, or possibly because of her determination to win the prize money.

Nami is an orphan found by Belle-Mère, a female Marine, on a battlefield as an infant. The marine adopted her along with Nojiko, another child, and the three became as close as a real family. However, this ended when the infamous Fish-Man pirate Arlong took over Cocoyashi Village (or Coco Village in the English language manga and dub), their adopted hometown, and imposed a fee on every single adult and child in the village in order to ‘live’.

Since Belle-Mère could not pay for her entire family’s monthly fee for living, Belle-Mère was used as an ‘example’ by Arlong to demonstrate to the townspeople what will happen to them if they ever go against him or fail to pay the fee. Belle-Mère is then brutally murdered by a shot from Arlong in front of Nami and Nojiko. Nami was then kidnapped and forced to become a cartographer for Arlong. However, Arlong struck a deal with Nami: if she brought him one hundred million Belli (the form of currency in One Piece), he would free her village.

Nami realized then that if she ever told the citizens of Cocoyashi Village, she might be bringing them false hope, as she couldn’t possibly guarantee her success, and knew that one day she might be forced to run away. Although Nojiko eventually told them, Nami lived in the belief that they still hated her for joining Arlong’s crew. She then swore to never again ask anyone for help.

She spent eight years making maps and stealing treasure from pirates in order to buy back her village.

It was during this time that she met Luffy during the situation with Buggy in Orange Town (as seen in the Buggy the Clown Arc) and temporarily joined up with him with the reasoning that she will get most of the treasure that is found. (in the anime, she met Luffy briefly in the first episode, as he was escaping from a ship she was robbing.

After helping defeat Captain Kuro in Syrup Village (i.e: Captain Kuro arc), and reaching the Baratie restaurant with Luffy, Nami took off with the crew’s loot and ship and headed for Arlong Park. Nami was only 7 million beli short of fulfilling her end of the deal, but Arlong shamelessly used Nezumi, a corrupt Marine captain, to steal all of the money, thus ensuring that Nami would forever be in his crew, without breaking his promise.

Later, Luffy arrives and after seeing a distraught Nami in the process of carving the Arlong tattoo off her arm and screaming Arlong’s name in anger, he accepts her plea for help. Along with Sanji, Zoro and Usopp, he battles and defeats Arlong and his crew. Nami’s village is freed, and she rejoins the crew as a permanent member. On her way out of the village, Nami wished to say goodbye to no one.

She left the money back in Nojiko’s house, and runs onto the Going Merry after stealing all of the villagers’ wallets at the same time. This causes certain opinions for Nami to spring up, like Sanji cheering on Nami, Zoro saying that Nami might betray them again, Usopp saying that she hasn’t changed, and Luffy laughing. She was nearly defeated by Kalifa

Recently, in Chapter 435, Nami received her first bounty: 16 Million Beli. Amusingly this puts her above Buggy the Clown, the villain introduced in the same arc as Nami, and on the same level as Captain Kuro, another cat themed character. Out of all the Straw Hats, she is the only one complaining about the fact she got a bounty, though she says “at least my picture was cute”.

It was revealed that the photographer told her he was a W7 reporter so she willingly posed. Later, Genzo is seen in Coco Village, loudly declaring that Nami’s picture “would attract more perverts than bounty hunters!” (she was photographed while wearing a polka dotted bikini) Humorously, Nojiko questions why Genzo has a large blown up version of the picture on his wall.

When Usopp rejoins the crew, while both he and Luffy are crying over each other, she says, with tears in her eyes, that they aren’t that cool.

Nami, along with Chopper and Usopp, went riding on a mini-version of the Going Merry before they tumbled into a moat on the floating ghost island, Thriller Bark. After being chased by a Cerberus-like monster, they were invited to Dr. Hogback’s mansion by the mysterious Hildon.

On the way to the mansion, they hear a bit about Dr. Hogback, but Nami freaks out and asks Hildon to stop the cart. Hildon leaves the passenger section of the cart to speak with the driver. Ten minutes pass by, and they realize that Hildon left them in a cemetery filled with zombies. Nami gets bitten by one of the zombies, and fears that she’ll turn into one herself. They run away from the zombies, and realize that they have arrived at the Hogback Mansion.

After having dinner at the mansion, she takes a bath with Chopper and Usopp guarding the door. She tells them through the door that they’d leave when night falls, pointing out that the entire mansion was full of zombies, and thus was no safer than outside. She also voiced her suspicions about Dr. Hogback, pointing out that if he had nothing to with the zombies, he wouldn’t be living on the island.

Just then, a voice says that she is a smart woman, and something invisible pins her arm against the wall, presumably the same thing that attacked the Thousand Sunny. The voice says that she is weaker than the woman on the ship (Robin) and that it favors the weak. Putting something over her mouth gagging her when she begins to scream, it declares “You….become our bride!” Hearing her cries for help, Usopp and Chopper rush into the bathroom. Chopper smells out the invisible creature, and Usopp shoots it as it tries to escape out the window without Nami, though the creature is later heard talking to Dr. Hogback, and thus appears unharmed.

Now, Nami, Chopper, and Usopp are trying to escape from the zombie-filled mansion, and accidentally ended up in the secret passageway leading to Dr. Hogback’s secret lab. They ran down the passageway and discovered many pictures of a happy, healthy, and living version of the zombie Cindry hanging on its walls.

They read that Cindry is no longer alive, when they are telling this to Dr. Hogback a zombie walks in. The zombie is a general who instantly hits Nami, Chopper and Usopp with the back of his sword. Although they seem to be fine, ten seconds later they are affected from the hit. Nami also notices that the general acts like Brooke.

While unconscious, they were carried away by two zombie animals in a coffin to an unknown destination. The three manage to escape from the coffin, but end up in a garden of zombie animals. When a zombie was about to attack Nami, she was saved by a zombie resembling a cross between a penguin and a Bulldog with the personality, speech pattern, and fighting style of Sanji.

The dogpenguin continues to defend Nami for a while, but suddenly Absalom and Lola appear. Absalom turns invisible and takes Nami with him, but she use a thunder bolt on him and the shock makes him more in love with her. Then Lola chases Nami and she, Usopp and Chopper flee from her. Usopp and Chopper turn and face Lola, but she knocks them out of the way, and Nami stumbles.

Lola is about to stab her, when Nami claims that she is a man, a transvestite named “Namizo”, so she poses no threat to Lola’s attempt to marry Absalom. Nami then gives her some ideas of how to seduce Absalom, and Lola runs back to him, as Nami, Chopper and Usopp run away. Later, the trio witnesses Luffy’s shadow being placed into Oz, a zombie, and are discovered by Gecko Moria and his crew. As they escape, Nami is captured by Absalom, and the two disappear.

Unconscious, she is then taken to a wedding ceremony where she was to marry Absalom, with the zombie generals attending as guests. However, the wedding is interrupted when the zombie generals are beaten up by Oz, the zombie with Luffy’s shadow. Sanji then arrives, and as of chapter 463, appears to have defeated Absalom by throwing salt on him.

Nami is a highly skilled navigator and cartographer. She has the innate ability to sense changes in the weather and can even predict the appearance of the supposedly unpredictable cyclones of the Grand Line. She is also an excellent thief and pickpocket who can steal small items such as keys on light encounters without the victim noticing.

Nami is not as skilled a combatant as some of the Straw Hats, although she is able in wielding a staff, and can take down normal pirates or marines with few problems. She usually ends up fighting a female villainess. She is able to unleash quick and moderately powerful strikes, and during the Alabasta arc and beyond, uses a weather manipulating staff Usopp created for her, the Clima Tact (known as the Weather Forcer in 4Kids’ adaption), to fight.

The weapon is actually partly used for party tricks, but using certain combinations, Nami turns the tomfoolery of Usopp into a deadly force to be reckoned with, and is able to defeat one of the strongest members of the Baroque Works, Miss Doublefinger (Mr. 1’s partner agent, and Baroque Works’ second strongest female agent); one of the CP9 members and two lieutenants of Enel’s Enforcers, Hotori and Kotori, with the help of Gan Fall.

Currently, Nami has been given a Dial enhanced Clima-Tact, the “Perfect Clima-Tact”, by Usopp. The new weapon was powerful enough to wipe out an entire group of soldiers; with the Perfect Clima-tact, she also managed to defeat CP9’s Kalifa, securing her place as one of the crew’s most valuable members.

Before receiving her Climatact in the Alabasta Arc, Nami’s fighting style was much more deceitful, using her brilliant mind and her good looks to solve her problems. She would shamelessly manipulate one of her crewmates to fight in her place, usually by blackmailing Zoro, charming Sanji, or ordering Luffy around. In the fourth One Piece movie she is even seen posing seductively to get information out of a bartender.

She also had excellent luck: situations would arise that kept her out of the line of battles during fights. In a few rare cases, she’d used her looks to distract an opponent from attacking her. Her more manipulative battle-strategies began diminishing during the Alabasta Arc and beyond when she received her Clima-Tact and began to fight her own battles.

Some common techniques include Thunderbolt Tempo/Tempest (using Heat and Cool Balls, a cloud is formed, and by sending a Thunder Ball in, a huge bolt of lightning is summoned) and Mirage Tempo/Tempest (by manipulating the heat of the surrounding, Nami can create illusory copies of herself, which is further augmented by the Perfect Clima Tact’s Mirage Tempo Fata Morgana).

Roronoa Zoro (Roronoa Zoro?), also known as Roronoa Zolo, is a fictional character in the anime and manga series One Piece by Eichiro Oda. He is a swordsman and the first member of Straw Hat Pirates to join the crew.

Being the second member of the Straw Hat Pirates and the first mate, he had a bounty of 60 million Belli after the Alabasta Arc, which was raised to 120 million after the events of Enies Lobby. According to Oda, Zoro resembles a shark.[1] Oda uses the color green to represent Zoro, and he smells of steel.[2] Zoro is also left handed.

Originally, the American version of the manga(VIZ) spelled his name as “Roronoa Zoro”, but it was changed to “Zolo” in chapter 50. His family name, Roronoa, comes from the real-life French pirate François l’Ollonais.[3] The name “Zoro” comes from the Japanese “zorome”, meaning a palindrome (a sequence that is the same backwards and forwards), since his birthday is November 11 (11/11).

Zoro is a skilled swordsman who fights with santōryū, three daito katana, and his own unique fighting style. Though not a samurai, he appears to maintain a certain degree of bushido, and is frequently mistaken for one. Unlike Luffy and most of the other Straw Hat pirates, Zoro has been known to kill his opponents if he has to, though never in cold blood.

Eiichiro Oda stated that he made Zoro as a bodyguard of Buggy in earlier versions of the story. However, he scrapped that idea for the final version of One Piece.

Zoro has a stern, serious and distanced personality, but unlike Robin he often reacts in a goofy and exaggerated comic style due to his gruff, impatient attitude. On the ship, he normally either trains with weights or sleeps. The only work he is seen doing regularly is hoisting the anchor using his great strength. He also likes sake, almost to the degree that Luffy likes meat, but like Nami, he never gets drunk due to his inhumanly-high endurance and tolerance for alcohol.

Another notable trait is his lack of orientation, as Zoro often gets lost, even in small, familiar spaces or when being led by someone. Despite this, he is often the first to sense an enemy or danger, and the first to react. He is often displayed as being well aware of dangerous situations and people around him as well as harsh but true facts.

Zoro often reminds others of those harsh facts, such as his speech to Chopper in the Davy Back Fight arc before the Groggy Ring match, reminding him that it was his choice to go to sea and to “be a man” and more recently, his speech concerning accepting Usopp back into the crew, stating that if Luffy went back on his word the crew couldn’t rely on him.

While speaking out like this shocks some of the other crew members, he usually ends up being right. Zoro has proclaimed himself an atheiest because the only being he’s ever believed in his himself. He often comes across as arrogant and overconfident, but only because he knows he’s a strong man with great fighting ability.

Even so, Zoro acknowledges that he still has a lot of untapped potential, and is constantly seen training and trying to improve his fighting skills. Zoro also adheres to a strict swordmaster’s code of honor, and never falsely brags or lies about his abilities, sometimes outright admitting a weakness, even to an enemy. He also never runs from a battle, and rarely uses trickery to win, believing that doing so is cowardly and scorning anyone who uses such tactics too often. Zoro is very vigorous, strong-willed, and determined. On Little Garden, he attempted to slice off his feet to escape death and return to a battle, resulting in scars around both his ankles.

While he doesn’t show it, he holds all of his crewmates in high regard and despite his focus on his dream he loves being a Straw Hat and has grown accustomed to his life as a pirate. There has been a strong rivalry between Zoro and Sanji ever since they met on the Baratie.

They are constantly trying to outdo each other and often get into comical physical and verbal fights over petty matters at very inopportune moments, such as during the Davy Back Fight. When they work together in combat, however, they make a terrifying team. Zoro also holds a slight grudge against Nami, as she has blackmailed Zoro many times. Nevertheless, he helps and protects her whenever she’s in any real danger. Zoro has a unique relationship with Ensign Tashigi of the Marines.

Tashigi and Zoro met in Loguetown, where she helped him search for a new katana. She is opposed to Zoro, as she is marine, and dreams of taking legendary swords (such as Zoro’s Wado Ichimonji) away from pirates and bounty hunters. Zoro is the swordsman of the crew, and therefore normally fights other swordsmen of enemy groups such as Cabaji the Acrobat in the Buggy the Clown arc or Mr. 1 in the Alabasta arc. His goal is to become the world’s best swordsman.

To accomplish this, he has to defeat Dracule Mihawk who, as of now in the story, holds the title. He confronted Mihawk once during the Baratie arc but lost to a 6 inch knife and was left with the huge scar on the front of his torso, which was caused by Mihawk’s Black Sword (Großes Messer). After his defeat Zoro vowed never again to lose in terms of swordsmanship to anyone. This is one of the very few scenes in which Zoro is seen crying. Zoro’s preoccupation with his swordsmanship is so great that he usually shows little interest in anything outside this narrow focus.

When Zoro has the intention to fight seriously, he normally ties his trademark black-green bandana (which is usually tied around his left upper arm) over his head.

Unlike most of the Straw Hats, Zoro claims to be an atheist. Nami and Chopper have both claimed that Zoro is more arrogant than a god. Ironically, most of Zoro’s attacks are puns with religious connections despite his view on religion. One of Zoro’s common attacks, Oni Giri (Demon Slash), is a pun on the Japanese word onigiri (rice ball). Another common attack, the 36/72/108 Pound Cannon, is a reference to the 36 passions of Buddhism. Zoro’s newest power, Asura, also borrows from religion by taking its name from a group of Hindu demons.

Zoro spent his childhood training in a dojo. How he became a student of that dojo was not explained in the manga, but was in the anime. When Zoro was a young boy, he challenged the dojo to a match with its strongest person in order to test his strength, even though he had no experience in sword-fighting whatsoever.

He made a deal with the dojo master, saying that if he won, he’d take their school sign. If he lost, he’d join the dojo. However, instead of fighting against the dojo master as he’d expected, Zoro ended up fighting against the master’s daughter, Kuina, who was only two years older than Zoro. Kuina defeated Zoro with one blow, and he ended up joining the dojo.

After training in the dojo for a short time, 11-year-old Zoro had become adept in fighting with two swords and was now strong enough to defeat the dojo’s adults. However, there was one person Zoro still could not beat - Kuina. Frustrated, he tried to get stronger, pushing himself to his limits in training every day, seemingly to no avail.

After their 2000th fight (and Kuina’s 2000th victory) Zoro challenged her in private for one more match - with real swords. He lost. Afterwards. Zoro cried out of frustration; he couldn’t fulfill his dream of becoming the world’s best swordsman if he couldn’t beat Kuina. After Zoro stated this, Kuina started to cry as well, explaining that she wanted to be the best swordsman too, but her father had said that girls can’t be master swordsmen since they will mature to be physically weaker than males.

This angered Zoro. He yelled at Kuina that this wasn’t true, that she could still beat him, and that training so hard to defeat someone who’d become weaker than him made him look bad. Zoro swore that the day he defeats Kuina, it’d be because he trained hard and grew stronger, not because she grew weaker. This made Kuina feel better and she decided to continue chasing her dreams. Inspired, the two made a promise: that both would grow stronger, and one day, one of them would eventually become the world’s best swordmaster.

The next day, Kuina dies falling down the stairs to the basement while looking for her whetstone. Zoro attends her funeral procession without crying, showing his mourning instead by training more vigorously and desperately than ever.

Note: In the English dub by 4Kids, this scene was censored and instead she was written to have been badly hurt by a group from a nearby town and was unable to fight anymore.
Later, Zoro’s sensei, Kuina’s father, had a private conversation with Zoro, saying that Zoro’s presence had inspired her to train harder and become stronger than ever before.

He said that because of Zoro, Kuina had begun breaking down the physical barriers that prevented a swordswoman from becoming the greatest. Though he doesn’t specifically say so, it is clear that Kuina’s father regrets telling his daughter that she couldn’t be the best on the basis of her gender alone. Upon hearing this, Zoro cries for the first time since Kuina’s death, and begs his sensei for Kuina’s sword, so that he may achieve their shared dream of becoming the best swordsman for the both of them, and travel from then on with her memory beside him. His sensei agreed, and gave him the Wado Ichimonji, and Zoro begins training in Santōryū, three-sword style.

Several years later, Zoro, now a teenager, is seen using santōryū to destroy rocks. He then prays at Kuina’s gravestone with his sensei one final time before setting out on his journey to become the world’s best swordsman.

In the manga, Zoro’s past is much shorter, not explaining how Zoro came to be a student at the dojo. It also does not include any of the young Zoro’s training scenes, Kuina’s funeral procession, the sensei’s conversation with Zoro about Kuina’s growing strength, and Zoro’s last visit to Kuina’s grave before he began traveling the East Blue. These scenes were all added into the anime.
Zoro went to sea, looking to find and challenge Mihawk, the current strongest swordsman in the world. However, he somehow got lost at sea and was unable to find his way back to his island. Since swordfighting is more or less Zoro’s only skill, he made money by catching wanted pirates and turning them in for their bounties, becoming known as the terrifyingly strong “Pirate-Hunter Zoro”.

Because of his reputation, Zoro was offered a position and a number in Baroque Works because of his bounty hunting skills, but declined when he was not allowed to “be the boss”. Afterwards, he killed the person who offered, the late Mr. 6 of Baroque Works.

A moment of kindness landed Zoro in trouble with Helmeppo, the wimpy son of the Marine captain Axe-Hand Morgan. Zoro joined Monkey D. Luffy’s crew after being saved from execution from the Marines, and is now one of Luffy’s crew as the first mate. Holding onto his dream of becoming the greatest swordsman in the world, he told Luffy that he only joined him to avoid dying before achieving his dream.

Zoro swore that if being on Luffy’s crew ever got in the way of this dream, he’d kill him. Luffy simply smiled and said that as the future Pirate King, he wanted no one other than the strongest swordsman in the world on his crew.

In Loguetown, Zoro acquired the Kitetsu III and the Yubashiri to replace the swords that’d been destroyed during his battle with Mihawk.

During the Alabasta arc, it was revealed that Zoro had yet to learn to cut steel. This caused a major problem for him during the Baroque Works Saga during his fights against Mr. 3 and Mr. 1. During his fight with Mr. 1, he discovered the Shishi Sonson (Lion’s Breathe) attack, which allowed him to cut through virtually anything by focusing the ki in his sword. On the brink of death, Zoro used this attack right when Mr. 1 was about to deliver the finishing blow, defeating the Baroque Works agent and achieving his goal of cutting steel.

During the Enies Lobby arc, Zoro’s Yubashiri was destroyed by a Marine who’d eaten the Rust-Rust Devil Fruit.

As Merry fell apart and Luffy and the crew gave her a Viking funeral, he continued to show his signature tough guy attitude by standing staunchly and not shedding any tears. He was later seen staring at the broken hilt of his sword wondering what he should do.

In Chapter 435, he was seen trying to buy a sword but had no money and was thrown out. Shortly after, Zoro’s new bounty is revealed to be 120 Million Beli.

In Chapter 438 the Straw Hats discussed whether or not to allow Usopp to rejoin the crew.

During this scene, Zoro gives an emotional rebuttal including the following points:

Luffy and Usopp settled their conflict with an honorable duel.

Usopp lost, and “left on his own terms”.

Luffy would be breaking his word if he allowed Usopp to return without an apology

If Zoro cannot trust Luffy, he will “cause a fight and leave”.

Interestingly, when Usopp does show up and the first thing he does is pretend the duel was just a joke, both Luffy and Zoro pretend not to hear it, and Zoro is later seen smiling after Usopp repents and rejoins the crew.

Zoro stayed on Thousand Sunny when Luffy, Nami and Sanji went to investigate the ghost ship. When they come back with Brook, Zoro shows extreme dislike for Brook and is shocked by Luffy’s impulsive decision. When Brook explains his unique condition, Zoro seems to be suspicious about his story.

Later, Zoro joins Luffy in boarding “Thriller Bark” where they meet a Cerberus. Along with Sanji, Zoro discourages Luffy from asking a couple of zombies to join their crew. While in Hogback’s mansion, Zoro disappears not long after Sanji does. Later, a zombie was shown attacking Robin, Luffy, and Franky with Zoro’s Ishitoryu: 36-Pound-Cannon attack. However, the zombie’s body was that of a man who died protecting his family at the age of 59. After Gecko Moria revealed the extent of his powers, it is now believed that the zombie received Zoro’s shadow, which in turn gave him Zoro’s attacks.

Zoro is found sleeping near Luffy and Sanji, back on the Thousand Sunny, by Usopp, Chopper, Franky, and Robin. Ussop manages to wake him by lying that a “Lady Swordsman” had arrived. Awoken now, Zoro berates himself at the dishonor of being taken off his guard. Luffy tells Zoro who has his shadow and plans are made to retrieve Luffy’s, Sanji’s, Brook’s, and his own shadow.

He is currently fighting Ryuuma and confidently plans to take his sword, the Meitou Shuusui (Clear Autumn Water) when he wins. However, Ryuuma is a far more powerful opponent than Zoro believed. Five minutes into the battle, Franky and Brooke see Zoro flying out of the building and landing unconscious and wounded. Ryuuma is standing in a cloud of steam, looking down at Zoro out of the building. Brooke remarks that the duel is over and Ryuuma did not even have to fight seriously against Brooke earlier. The condition of Zoro is not known at this time.

Zoro is a master swordsman, able to use one, two and three swords in varying attack styles, although he is most proficient with his Santōryū (literally: three sword style). Lacking a third hand for a third sword, Zoro holds his third sword in his mouth. Zoro often speaks with his sword held in his mouth, though it’s unknown how he manages to do so.

The creator of the series, Eiichiro Oda, has said that it is his heart that allows him to speak, though Oda is known for giving joke answers to fans’ questions, as well as just making up answers on the spot to avoid leaving a fan’s question unanswered. A more realistic explanation to this question could be that Zoro mastered a form of ventriloquism.

Zoro is extremely physically strong and although he is widely considered the second strongest fighter on the Straw Hat crew, his physical power and combat skill rival those of Luffy (in base form, without the aid of their newest skills Gears and Asura). Zoro is Luffy’s first mate and while most superpowered characters gain power from eating one of the Devil Fruits, Zoro has gained his powers through hard work and training alone.

Even without his swords, he has monstrous strength (in the Alabasta Arc, he lifted and tossed an entire building at Mr. 1, despite being injured) and he can use some sword techniques without his swords (in the Groggy Ring portion of the Davy Back Fight Arc, he launched Pickles towards Big Bun with a swordless style Dragon Twister). Zoro has shown to pack powerful punches, even developing the ability to pump his arms up with pure muscle. His leg strength, while certainly nowhere near Sanji’s level are also quite formidable, allowing him to kick massive beasts to submission and run at the same speed as Sanji

Zoro’s endurance is also near superhuman, as it shows the fact he has defeated incredibly strong opponents (like Hachi and Mr. 1) at their peak when he was greatly injured to the point of near death. While fighting Hachi, he was still wounded from his fight with Mihawk, developed a fever, was stabbed in the shoulder by Arlong, hurled across Arlong Park by Luffy (who was unaware of his injuries) and hit in the head with a large rock when the park was destroyed, and completely recovered.

Recently, he has developed the ability called Asura, where he presumably focuses his ki, giving off an illusion of three faces on his head and six arms all equipped with swords for a total of nine swords to use. Due to this, he is capable to use the Kyutōryū (nine sword style), with an attack power probably similar to Luffy’s Gear skills, but it’s not yet confirmed.

Until now, he used only one Kyutōryū attack, Asura: Ichibugin (Three-Headed-Six-Armed-Demon-God: One-Mist-Silver), but he might use some other Kyutōryū move in future battles. Asura is presumed to be extremely hard to maintain, as Zoro has only used it once in short burst, as the finishing move of the fight.

Monkey D. Luffy (Monkī Dī Rufi?) is a fictional character and leading protagonist in the anime and manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. He is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.

The captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy comes from Fuschia Town. He had the highest bounty in East Blue at 30 million Belli after his defeat of Arlong, but the bounty increased to 100 million Belli after he defeated Shichibukai member Sir Crocodile, and again to 300 million Belli (on level with the Shichibukai members) after defeating Rob Lucci of CP9 and declaring war on the World Government.

Luffy is the son of Monkey D. Dragon, brother to Portgas D. Ace, and the grandson of vice-admiral Monkey D. Garp.

His trademark Straw Hat (from which he gets his nickname ‘Straw Hat Luffy’) was entrusted to him by the legendary pirate captain Red-Haired Shanks. Aside from his hat, Luffy’s customary outfit is a red vest, blue trousers, and sandals. Luffy has a scar on his left cheek, beneath his eye, which he gave himself as a child to prove that he was mature and unafraid of pain (also to possibly look more like Shanks who is his idol). He has short black hair and black eyes.

Unlike the other main characters, Luffy wears the same outfit for most of the series. As he travels, he may change into clothing that is appropriate for the climate (as in the Drum Island or Alabasta story arcs). During the Enies Lobby arc, he wore a pair of black shorts because they had pockets he could use to carry food.

Eiichiro Oda has mentioned that the animal Luffy most resembles is a monkey. According to Oda, Luffy is represented by the color red, and smells like meat.

Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and, considering them his best friends, values them over all else. Even though they are all usually annoyed by his immaturity and seeming stupidity, they all respect him for his strength and his qualities as a leader.

At first glance, Luffy does not appear to be very intelligent, as he often sees things in childish manner and can easily be amazed by the simplest things. However, because he views the world in such a straightforward and simple manner, he is frequently the only person who can see what should be done. He likes to poke fun at other’s imperfections and character traits, even though he is rather worse himself.

Luffy seems to have an insatiable appetite, a characteristic that is common to the Japanese archetype of the (at times simple-minded) young male hero/adventurer with a heart of gold; perhaps hunger in Luffy’s case has to do with having an elastic stomach.

Although Luffy is fairly lighthearted, he has an unstoppable sense of determination, optimism, and courage, and will do anything to stand up for his friends and comrades. Ever since consuming the devil fruit he has not worried about his inability to swim, much like his brother. Many of these traits are common among Ds. The only thing which seems to frighten Luffy is his grandfather; the mere mention of him intimidates Luffy to such an extent that he does not fight back.

Luffy never kills any of the villains, no matter how cold-hearted they may be; instead, he frequently sends them flying, knocks them out, or leaves them beaten into submission (consequently, it is not uncommon for Luffy’s former opponents to come after him for revenge, such as Buggy the Clown and Alvida). Oda explains that it is not a question of morality so much as a matter of punishing the villains for their crimes - he feels that killing the villains lets them off too lightly, whereas allowing them to live and see their dreams ruined is a far more fitting punishment.

Luffy’s dream is to find the One Piece and become Pirate King. He knows that to achieve his goal, he will have to defeat many strong opponents, including the World Government and his childhood hero Shanks.

Luffy was trained from a young age by his grandfather Garp. Later Garp left Luffy and Ace in the care of a friend to continue his training.

When Luffy was seven years old, he met a gang of pirates led by a man named Red-Haired Shanks. After befriending them, Luffy decided that he wanted to become a pirate as well. It was at this time that Luffy cut himself under his eye to show he was tough enough to join Shanks’s crew (a scene that was never reproduced in the anime). He swore over Shank’s hat that one day he would be the pirate king.

During his time spent with Shanks, Luffy accidentally ate a Devil Fruit when it was left in an open case. The fruit, called the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum Gum Fruit, Rubber Rubber Fruit), turned Luffy into a rubber man capable of stretching, inflating, and bouncing back impact based attacks. Because Luffy did not know the nature of the fruit, Shanks and his crew did not hold the incident against him. They remained friends, but Luffy seemed to grow even more defensive of Shanks’s seemingly meek band of pirates.

As it shows in the back of volume one in One Piece, Luffy originaly got his Devil Fruit from his grandpa, Garp. But then the author changed it to Shanks.

After Luffy stood up to Higuma the Bear, a local mountain bandit that insulted Shanks and his crew, he was beaten, held hostage, and almost killed by a Sea King before Shanks rescued him. However, the incident cost Shanks his left arm. Shortly thereafter, Shanks set sail along with his crew; before leaving, he and Luffy promised each other that one day Luffy would surpass Shanks and become the Pirate King. Shanks left Luffy his straw hat as a parting gift, saying:

“ “Some day, return it to me - as a great pirate. It’s a promise, Luffy.” ”

Luffy has since worked on upholding that promise, and Shanks’ hat is his most prized possession. Luffy became enraged when Buggy and other pirates damaged his hat in their fight.

Luffy has since worked diligently on keeping that promise and is known famously as “Monkey D. Luffy”, or simply “Straw Hat Luffy”. Luffy now aims not only to be a grand pirate, but to become the Pirate King. Most people do not take his goal seriously, until they see his incredible strength. While the exact details of his training are unclear, it is known that his grandfather trained Luffy for a time by throwing him into deep valleys, leaving him alone in dangerous forests in the middle of the night, and tying him to balloons over high altitudes, all for the sake of making Luffy stronger.

Even the Marines started to take Luffy more seriously after he defeated the villainous Marine Captain “Axe-Hand” Morgan and several known pirates such as Buggy the Clown, “Pirate Admiral” Don Krieg, and Arlong The Fishman. A 30 million Beli reward was placed on his head after he defeated Arlong. This reward eventually became 100 million Beli after he defeated Sir Crocodile when the World Government deemed him a serious threat for beating one of their Shichibukai. After the events of Enies Lobby he received a bounty of 300 million Beli; this gives Luffy the highest known active bounty, and the third highest bounty known so far.

During his voyage, Luffy has had a few meetings with the Marines, from the not-too-serious looking return of Ironfist Fullbody, whom Luffy met first at the Baratie, to Captain Smoker of Loguetown, to Admiral Aokiji and, most recently, with his grandfather Monkey D. Garp.

Luffy has passed several islands on his way to and along The Grand Line, including Drum Island, Little Garden, Alabasta, and Skypiea. He has met many new allies, as well as making several enemies, such as Buggy the Clown, Wapol, Sir Crocodile, Enel, CP9 and the entire World Government.

While on his voyage, Luffy also found out the identity of his father, Monkey D. Dragon, and that his father is still alive, details that before had been unknown to Luffy.

After wandering around the mansion, Luffy realizes that Sanji is missing and later Zoro. Luffy puts on a nearby suit of armor and ends up fighting several of the general zombies. Afterwards, he ends up getting captured in a large coffin and is being transported by chain to an unknown location.

Luffy winds up locked in a cage in a room with Dr.Hogback, Absalom, Perona, and the Shichibukai Gecko Moria. Though Luffy nearly escapes after eating his cage, Perona prevents this(also causing Luffy to wish being reincarnated as a sea cucumber), and Moria uses the power of the Kage Kage no mi(Shadow Shadow Fruit), to steal Luffy’s shadow. Moria then unlocks Zombie 900, the would-be host to Luffy’s shadow—a giant monster from 500 years ago named Oz. The monster Oz was resurrected not only with Luffy’s shadow but his personality as well.

Luffy was then found with Sanji and Zoro aboard the Thousand Sunny sleeping and was woken by Usopp when he stated seeing a beautiful lady swordsman carrying meat. After being woken up, Luffy then runs over to the kitchen and he grabs a big chunk of cheese which he stuffs his face with and he is informed by Usopp that Absalom wants to marry Nami and that his shadow was placed in the giant Oz. Luffy also learns the weakness of the zombies- Franky then tells Luffy about the question he asked Brook and about the promise that Brook made to Laboon.

Luffy then declares that he will make Brook their new member even if he has to drag Brook onto the ship. He then tells everyone present that they are going to launch a counterattack on Thriller Bark and that they are going to take it down. Luffy decides the plan is to defeat Gecko Moria first. The attack goes well at first, until Perona’s ghost take down Luffy and Sanji temporarily and then Oz smashes the giant stairway. Luffy is pulled to safety by Chopper and Robin.

He recovers from the attack and pushes ahead. He encounters Gecko Moria in Oz’s freezer. He then attempts to attack Gecko Moria but is stopped by Moria’s shadow Doppleman and other various shadowy creatures. Luffy jumps into to Oz’s freezer, hangs on to the rail and attacks from the bottom at Moria, literally “kicking his ass”.

Luffy is the captain and strongest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. He currently holds the highest bounty of any pirate from the East Blue. In his present journey, he has defeated extremely powerful foes, such as Sir Crocodile, Enel and Rob Lucci, as noted by his extremely high bounty of 300,000,000 Beli, reaching the amount of the former bounty of at least two Shichibukai.

Many times he has survived severe injuries and massive blood loss. His skills, developed by the hellish training he was subjected to as a child by his grandfather, are backed up by his unstoppable determination, making him nearly impossible to keep down during a fight. However, it also seems possible that he naturally has superhuman strength since all members of his family are incredibly strong, and Luffy himself is never seen training on the ship like Zoro. Luffy is capable of crushing steel with his bare fingers and breaking through thick bedrock with relative ease. His most astonishing feat of strength by far was causing two huge buildings he was stuck in between to collapse by simply pushing them away with his bare hands.

Though seemingly dimwitted, Luffy is quite ingenious when it comes to combat and has shown great adaptability. For example, he figured out how to counter Enel’s Mantra, found out Crocodile’s vulnerability to water, and later learned Soru just from seeing it in action. Luffy is constantly developing new attacks to keep up with his foes, the most dramatic development being Gears 2 and 3 because of his loss to Aokiji.

Luffy gained stretching powers from eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which is one of the rare and legendary Devil Fruits. After consuming the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy’s body became rubber, giving him the ability to stretch every single part of his body to great lengths. He is able to use the malleable stretchiness of his limbs to gain tremendous velocity and hit enemies with devastating impact.

His rubber body is virtually immune to recoil from these attacks, and blunt objects such as punches, and even bullets, reflect off him harmlessly. Being rubber, Luffy also resists electricity, which gave him an advantage while fighting Enel. However, he is still very susceptible to sharp objects such as swords, but still has more resistance than normal flesh and bone. Luffy can also be hurt by physical attacks if they are powered with an emotion, as demonstrated by his grandfather and Nami. Like all Devil Fruit users, Luffy cannot swim, although he could not swim even before he ate his Devil Fruit anyway.

Due to the fact that Luffy hates missing his meal while asleep (especially after a battle) he developed an ability to eat while sleeping, as well as being able to figure out in less than a second how many meals he has missed if unconscious for a period of time (counting five meals each day). These traits also seem to be common with Luffy’s family, as seen with his brother Portgas D. Ace and his grandfather.

Gears are a recent addition to Luffy’s abilities, and are another example of his rapid progress in utilizing his powers more efficiently. However, both of his gears have huge downsides in their usages. It was revealed that this form was discovered by Luffy accidentally in the fight against Ratchet during the adventure on Mecha Island in One Piece Movie 7: The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle, yet because the movies are non-canonical, as they happen outside the regular world of One Piece and several of them have even an illogical happening in comparison with the regular series (see trivia for One Piece Movie 3 Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals for details), this information is also considered non-canonical.

After Aokiji defeated him, Luffy decided that he had to become much stronger if he wanted to pursue his dream and protect his friends. The result of his efforts was Gear Second, a technique first seen in Luffy’s fight against Blueno. After discovering the method to using Soru, Luffy assimilated the idea to attain a newer ability, by effectively utilizing his rubber body to boost momentum.

By exerting excessive pressure within his legs to accelerate blood flow, Luffy provides his body with more oxygen and nutrients, gaining a sudden burst in speed and strength; Lucci compares this process similar to taking a stimulant. Luffy’s attacks are likewise enhanced (he frequently adds Jet to their names to distinguish them); even superhuman fighters, like CP9 agents, have difficulty reacting to Luffy’s Gear Second attacks.

While in Gear Second, Luffy’s metabolic rate is so high that his sweat vaporizes, giving it the appearance of steam, and his skin turns slightly pink from the increased blood flow. Since all of Luffy’s organs are rubber, they can expand and allow the blood to move at the increased speed without over stressing any one internal organ and causing it to explode.

Of Luffy’s two gears, this is the most powerful and effective as demonstrated by the brief, yet potent, advantage it gives Luffy in combat, making him an untouchable force while using it. However, Luffy can only use Gear Second for a short period of time, since the accelerated speed at which nutrients are used up depletes his energy stores rapidly, leaving him thoroughly exhausted.

The mechanics behind this enhancement also mean reduced strength and ability after significant use: with nutrient stores running low, having a faster blood flow would be quite pointless, since there are no nutrients to deliver- Luffy can immediately recover by ingesting food to replenish himself, as seen after the fight against Blueno.

During Luffy’s fight with Lucci, a further downside to Gear Second was also revealed; the long-term damage it causes to his body. While Luffy’s rubber form allows him to successfully perform Gear Second without killing him outright, usage exerts excessive pressure on the body causing damage to his internal organs and circulatory system, due to his incapability to fully cope with the forms ability. Lucci notes that his technique shortens his life, but Luffy shrugs it off, stating that winning and saving his friends is worth the sacrifice.

To use Gear Third, Luffy corks his mouth with his thumb, bites into his thumb joint and blows very hard into it, inflating his arm. He is then able to transfer the air through his bones throughout the entire body, requiring the torso to act as an interface for his various limbs. Luffy blows so much air into his body that when it is all focused on a single limb, it becomes the size equivalent to that of a giant’s.

Used with his already-strong physiology, this apparently gives his arm more mass and a larger area to attack with, but he sacrifices speed for this enhanced strength. The bones are the key difference between this form and his old “Gomu Gomu no Fuusen” move, where his balloon form was soft and squishy like a regular balloon, whereas the inflated bones are hard enough to withstand bullets, which was demonstrated when Luffy’s inflated body was shot by several marine bullets, which harmlessley bounced off his body.

He was even able to deal heavy damage to Lucci when he used his Tekkai using one Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol. The bones being much harder also mean a lot of compression of air takes place when using Gear Third, making Gear Third not just a “for-show” move, as Lucci initially thought, but like equipping Luffy with a giant mace of astounding mass when used in attacks. When he attacks in this form, he often uses the word Gigant before the attack, describing the giant nature of the attack.

In between his attacks, Luffy brings the air back to his chest and then shifts it into another body part. Because he used Soru in his Gear 2nd form, some fans believe he is using (or has gotten as a side effect something similar to) Tekkai in this form. To leave the Gear Third form, Luffy exhales heavily, propelling himself backwards.

The usage and deactivation of Gear Third brings about shrinking, which is a negative side-effect like, a deflated balloon. The amount of time Luffy spends in his shrunken form is roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent in Gear Third mode. This shrunken form has shown no ability to stretch at all, and it has been shown that Luffy loses strength when he kept hitting Lucci’s face to no effect, but apart from that, Luffy functions normally. A currently used strategy is to run and hide from an opponent for the duration of the shrinkage. Luffy’s clothes seem to shrink along with his body after he exits Gear Third.

Gear Third’s effects were first shown when Luffy, who was chasing after Robin and Spandam, had to break down a huge metal door, whilst the actual usage itself was first shown during Luffy and Lucci’s fight at Enies Lobby.

The Straw Hat Pirates (Mugiwara Kaizoku-dan?), sometimes referred to as the Luffy Pirates (Rufi Kaizoku-dan?) or the Straw Hat Crew (Mugiwara Ichimi?), are the main focus and protagonists of the anime and manga series One Piece, by Eiichiro Oda.

They all have at least one talent in which they are virtually perfect, and several (especially the captain and first mate) have astonishingly inhuman strength. As outlaws, they all have bounties on their heads, and are wanted by the World Government. Some of their bounties (including the captain’s) are remarkably high.

An important trait shared by the Straw Hats is that they each have a dream to fulfill, and they refuse to die before achieving their dreams. The World Government and the Navy consider them one of the most dangerous pirate crews in the One Piece world, due to their spectacular evasion of the near unavoidable Buster Call on Enies Lobby.

Each member of the Straw Hats has a dream they want to achieve. These dreams are their reasons for joining Luffy’s crew, and essentially the driving force behind their lives. Each Straw Hat’s dream was inspired by tragedies (often deaths) in their childhoods that involved at least one person they idolized and cared for deeply.

Some, like Chopper, Nami, Franky, and Usopp are fulfilling their dreams by accumulating knowledge and/or achieving a certain task while sailing the Grand Line. Others, like Robin, Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji are searching for a person/place/thing that can only be found on the Grand Line. Whatever the reason, each of the Straw Hats’ dreams involves traveling the Grand Line, and each Straw Hat member refuses to die before achieving his or her dream.

All the current Straw Hats have bounties over their heads with a total bounty of “667,000,050″ Belli

In the beginning of the manga, Luffy claimed that he wanted at least 10 people to join his crew before entering the Grand Line. This was changed after Usopp told Luffy that after “the chef” joined them, they would rescue Nami and go to the Grand Line. Although this is long past the expiring date, it can still serve as evidence that there will be 10 or more Straw Hats at some point of the manga. Luffy also claimed in the beginning of the manga, that he will gather a crew strong enough to surpass his childhood hero Red-Haired Shanks.

Usually when he asks someone to join, Luffy is turned down completely. Later on the person in question will join anyway (mostly happens after Luffy defeats the main villain of the current arc). The major exceptions to this rule are Usopp, who was thrilled to be asked to join and accepted immediately, and Nico Robin, who invited herself into the crew and had to convince the others to let her stay.

Luffy doesn’t seem to mind if someone he wants to recruit has a profession or not, asking anyone who is interesting or allowing anyone who wants to join to become a crew member. He allows Usopp to join, and later on names him the team’s sniper, and considered Vivi a member even though she has no profession. He also offered Gaimon the chance to join his crew (which Gaimon tearfully turned down) when Gaimon had no apparent usefulness to the crew.

Luffy has recently offered a skeleton named Brook to join the crew when they go into the Florian Triangle. Brook eventually declined joining after initially accepting. Despite this, the people who eventually become Straw Hat members all have their unique above-average fighting abilities and at least one talent in which they are virtually perfect in.

Though most adventures in One Piece are random, there seems to be a ‘process’ for recruitment. First, a situation arises where someone new is needed. The crew comes across someone who fulfills the criteria (i.e. Chopper the doctor, Nami the navigator). Luffy offers the person a position, and is usually turned down initially.

Meanwhile, a situation arises in which, some way or another, Luffy ends up battling a ‘boss’ character, and the would-be crewmate battles an underling (i.e. Luffy vs Don Krieg after Sanji battles Gin and Pearl), during which their back story and dreams are revealed, thus convincing them to join the Straw Hat Crew. This process also fooled many fans into thinking Vivi would become a permanent crew member.

The crew members who did not follow this process are Nami, Robin, and Franky. Nami’s official recruitment was when Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji defeated Arlong and his pirates. Before that, she’d only been traveling with the Straw Hats and pretending to be a loyal crew member so she could find a chance to steal their treasure in order to save her village. Robin was the first to invite herself onto the crew, but only did so because she had nowhere else to go.

It wasn’t until later that she began to enjoy being with the Straw Hats, and only after the battles with CP9 that it was confirmed that she’d stay as a permanent member. Franky was a major ally of the Straw Hats in the battles of Enies Lobby, but it wasn’t suggested by other characters that he actually join the crew until after the fights were over.

If a Straw Hat crew member leaves the crew without Luffy’s permission, Luffy becomes adamant in getting them back. So far only Robin, Nami, and Usopp have tried to leave the crew, but all eventually came back and rejoined.

It should also be noted that Usopp was the only one to willingly leave while Robin and Nami were blackmailed into doing so. Usopp was also the only crew member to have Luffy’s permission to leave, though that permission came quite bitterly after a harsh fight between the two; he was allowed back after a tearful apology to the Straw Hats.

The “Black Tri-Stars” were a three-man ace pilot team in the classic anime TV series Mobile Suit Gundam.

(NOTE: The Black Tri-Stars are sometimes alternately referred to as the “Black Trinary,” or less often, the “Black Trinity.”)

The ace pilot trio known as the Black Tri-Stars consisted of Zeon ace pilots Lieutenant Gaia, Lieutenant Junior Grade Ortega, and Lieutenant Junior Grade Mash. The three men first met in May of Universal Century 0076 when the Zeon space forces began secretly practicing combat maneuvers in preparation for the upcoming war. The three were all assigned to the Mobile Training Battalion D Company, 2nd Platoon, and the three became good friends quickly.

During the Battle of Loum on January 16th, Universal Century 0079, the three men first earned their notorious reputation when they captured General Revil. The three customized MS-05 Zaku I that they piloted, painted in a black and purple colour scheme, earned the trio the nickname “Black Tri-Stars”.

It was using the high speed and maneuverability of the Zakus that the Black Tri-Stars came up with their own unique tactical maneuver. The Black Tri-Stars developed their trademark attack, the “Jet Stream Attack”. Moving in at high speed, the trio lines up one behind the other, forming a lethal simultaneous triple assault in which two of the members attack with ranged weapons and the last one attacks with a melee weapon.

The three members of the Black Tri-Stars were said to be more skilled than an entire squad of normal soldiers, and they proved it constantly with their ruthless attacks on the Earth Federation’s space forces. In July, 0079, the Black Tri-Stars alone in their new High Mobility Zaku IIs destroyed an entire Earth Federation Reconnaissance in Force fleet near the Zeon asteroid fortress of A Baoa Qu.

In October, 0079 the Black Tri-Stars are each given a new Dom and transferred to Earth by Kycilia Zabi where they join the 7th Terrestrial Mobile Division, 1st Mobile Suit Battalion. On November 6th the Black Tri-Stars arrive at Odessa, Ukraine to shore up the defences of the mining facilities against the Earth Federation’s upcoming Operation Odessa. The trio immediately sets out to ambush the White Base.

During the attack on the White Base the Black Tri-Stars manage to kill Ensign Matilda Ajan, but Gundam pilot Amuro Ray is able to avoid the deadly Jet Stream Attack and kills Lieutenant Junior Grade Mash, forcing the two remaining Black Tri-Stars to retreat in shock.

Gaia and Ortega return to Odessa where they honour the death of their fallen comrade, Mash. They decide the best way to both honour and avenge Mash’s death would be to destroy the Gundam and the White Base.

On November 9th, the remaining Black Tri-Stars attack the White Base during Operation Odessa (M’quve finds out about this and chews them out as they attack but the remaining Tri-Stars still continue on.) However Gaia and Ortega are killed by Amuro Ray, putting an end to the legacy of the Black Tri-Stars.

As a nod to the Black Tri-Stars, a Notorious Monster in Square Enix’s MMORPG Final Fantasy XI consisting of a trio of small bats is named the Black Triple Stars. In addition, the Black Triple Stars and all the mobs in its family are known for using a special attack called Jet Stream.

In the anime Mohoromatic, a group of 3 villagers perform the Jet stream attack on Mahoro while she performs the role of the Gundam.

In Great Teacher Onizuka manga, one of Onizuka’s students, Urumi Kanzaki, makes a string of pranks and vandalisms on Holy Forest Academy and its faculty and students. During this, she is confronted by a trio of female upper classman who are collectively known as the “Black Stars”. They are named Gaia, Masha and Ortega respectively, have notably dark skin and wear loose socks that are wide around the bottoms, in the style of Dom feet.

In the 29th episode of the anime series Yakitate!! Japan!, the rivalling bakery calls for the aid of three expert bakers from their Kyūshū branch, who bear an amazing resemblance to the Black Tri-stars. Even more intriguing is the fact they often wear jumpsuits similar to the pilot suits of the original characters, and often rode around on roller blades (as a contrast to the Dom mobile suits which hovered).

When they later try the main character’s special bread, they hallucinate, and find themselves in Doms fighting against their former employer (in G Gundam’s GF13-050NSW Nobel Gundam, for some reason).

In the strategy game series Gihren’s Greed, it is possible to save the Black Tristars from their demise at the hands of the Gundam. This can be accomplished in a number of ways, such as providing Ramba Ral with the support he needs to capture the White Base or simply not sending them to earth. If the player keeps them alive, they can get their own customised Gelgoog or YMS-15 Gyans.

In the RPG Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant, there are a trio of wolves that is an optional quest. Coincidentally their names are Gaia, mash, and Ortega.

In Full Metal Panic!, one episode had an Arm Slave (AS) match between two teams. One had the main character, Sousuke Sagara, helping his friend whose father owned said team (and lost every year). The opposing team, with a cocky leader, beats the team each year with his infamous ‘Red Stream Attack’.

In G Gundam, Sai Saichi saves Neo-Denmark’s Hans Holger’s younger sister Cecile from a gang of thugs. Those thugs later try to attack Sai Saichi before he can get to his match with Hans. Domon decides to take care of them, and his God Gundam more than easily defeats their mobile workers. These guys perform a move they call the ‘Jet Stream Attack’ on the God Gundam, but instead of charging straight on, these thugs circle around the opponent (to which Domon sticks his foot out and trips them).

As probably an homage to the original series, the end of Gundam SEED DESTINY has three pilots (one with an eye-patch) who pilot 3 ZGMF-XX09T DOM Trooper mobile suits. They perform the same Jet Stream Attack that the original Black Tri-Stars do.
In Front Mission: Gun Hazard, there is a trio of enemies piloting hovering robots painted in purple and red. They use an attack called the “Meteor Storm”.

In an episode of Super Milk Chan, on the mayor’s desk are 3 Dom model kits all lined up one after another ready to do their Jet-Stream attack.

In episode 44 of Digimon, 3 Garbagemon attack in a manner similar to that of the Black Tri-Stars’ Jet Stream Attack.

Lieutenant Ramba Ral was a character in the classic anime TV series Mobile Suit Gundam. He is voiced by Masashi Hirose in the original Japanese version and John Payne in the English dub.

Ramba Ral was the son of Jimba Ral, longtime friend of Zeon Zum Deikun. After the assassination of Zeon Zum Deikun, Deikun’s two children, Casval and Artesia, came to live with the Ral family. In order to protect them, the Ral family later sent them to live on Earth under the names Edward and Sayla Mass.

Ramba Ral joined the Zeon military in Universal Century 0064. He quickly made himself known as a great tactician, and a master of guerilla warfare. Ramba Ral first made a name for himself as an ace pilot in the Zeon mobile suit forces during the Battle of Loum where his impressive combat abilities and blue Zaku I earned him the nickname the Blue Giant (Aoki Kyosei). Ramba Ral is also sometimes referred to as the “Great Blue Star” or the “Blue Nova”.

Ramba Ral stayed in space for the majority of the One Year War, however after the death of Garma Zabi during the pursuit of the Federation assault carrier White Base Ramba Ral is assigned to lead a Special Pursuit Force and is sent down to Earth on a Zanzibar mobile cruiser. Ramba Ral is ordered to avenge the death of Garma Zabi, and is given a new prototype ground-type mobile suit, the Gouf, to do the job with.

Soon after arriving on Earth, Ramba Ral decides to have a reconnaissance in force and attacks the White Base on an island in the North Pacific. Soon after gauging the attack strength of the warship and the Gundam Ramba Ral retreats. The sheer power of Ramba Ral and his Gouf leave Gundam pilot Amuro Ray terrified.

Traveling in a Gallop-class land battleship, Ramba Ral continues to harass the White Base as it jouneys across the vast deserts of Central Asia. During the second attack on the White Base, Ramba Ral’s wingmate Akos is killed, and Cozun is captured when his Zaku II is disabled and taken back on board the White Base by Amuro Ray piloting the Guncannon.

When Cozun escapes from White Base’s brig he contacts Ramba Ral and Ramba again attacks the White Base in his Gouf to conduct a rescue. However, Cozun is killed before he can safely escape and Ramba Ral’s Gouf is disabled by the Gundam, forcing Ramba Ral to retreat.

Not soon afterwards Ramba Ral meets Amuro Ray again (but did not recognise Amuro), who had deserted the White Base with the Gundam after dispute with the captain Bright Noa, and Fraw Bow (who came to drag Amuro back) in a small cafe in the desert town of Sodon. After recognizing Fraw Bow as a Federation soldier, Ramba Ral decides to release her and assigns his men to follow her back to the White Base.

When Ramba Ral’s forces pinpoint White Base’s location they launch a surprise attack. Amuro sees the Zeon mobilizing to launch their attack and he decides to come back with the Gundam for rescue. Amuro attacks Ramba Ral’s Gouf and the two slash each others cockpits open, the two of them realizing that they had just met each other in the cafe. Amuro is able to destroy the Gouf, but Ramba Ral is able to escape by leaping out of the gash in the cockpit hatch and swinging out of the way of the explosion on a grappling hook he had attached to the Gundam’s arm.

Following his defeat Ramba Ral is contacted by Dozle Zabi and told to contact M’Quve to receive support. However M’Quve refuses to supply Ramba Ral with the new Dom mobile suits he was instructed to give him. Realizing he is alone, Ramba decides that it is his duty as a soldier to do whatever he can to carry out his mission.

While the Gallop and a Zaku II distract the White Base’s mobile suits Ramba Ral and several of his soldiers attack the White Base in close-quarter hand-to-hand combat and successfully invade the ship. Onboard the ship Ramba Ral finds Sayla Mass and immediately recognizes her as Artesia Zum Deikun, and he tells her that he was a servant of her father. As Ramba Ral lets his guard down by talking he is shot by Ryu Jose, whom he also wounded.

Wounded, Ramba Ral retreats into the White Base’s secondary bridge and locks himself in. Captain Bright orders Amuro to destroy the secondary bridge, and Amuro tears a hole in the wall. Realizing he is trapped, Ramba Ral arms a grenade and leaps out of the hole, exploding in the Gundam’s hand.

Ramba Ral was killed in action on the 05th of November, Universal Century 0079.

Ramba Ral was an excellent example of how tragic war could be, as well as how infighting among Zeon factions proved to be an even more crippling handicap than the Gundam’s superior fighting ability. Had M’Quve handed the new Doms to him, there is a good chance Ral could’ve put up a great fight against the White Base and the Gundam. This is evidenced by the damage Ral was able to inflict on the Gundam, despite the Gouf being inferior to it.

Ral was essentially a soldier who did his job, even though he knew his chances of surviving, let alone succeeding, were next to none. Sayla’s memories of him were apparently happy ones, and his death hit both her and Amuro hard.

His attitude is almost reminisceint of the German World War Two commander Erwin Rommel, since he used tactics that were similarily used by the “Desert Fox”.

In the strategy game Gihren’s Greed, if playing on the Zeon side players have the option to overrule M’Quve and send Ral the new Doms. In the Playstation 2 version of Gihren’s Greed, Ral succeeds with the help of the Doms and captures not only the White Base, but the Guncannon and Guntank as well. However, the Gundam still manages to escape. In other versions of Gihren’s Greed, should Ral be killed in action the Zeon forces have the option to hold a state funeral for him, similar to the one held for Garma Zabi.

On the other hand, in the PS1/Sega Saturn version of this same game, should Ramba Ral survive the war, he will ultimately defect to Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon, along with his crew, given his family’s relations to Zeon Deikun.

Ral’s famous line “This is no Zaku, boy! No Zaku!” can also be heard in the game. In addition, should he survive his battles with the Gundam, Ral can be given a Dom, a Gelgoog and a Gyan, all painted in his trademark blue.

When piloting a Gouf: “This is not a Zaku! Not a Zaku!”

When piloting his customised Dom: “This is not a Gouf! Not a Gouf!”
When piloting either his customised Gelgoog/Gyan: “This is not a Dom! Not a Dom!”

This line can also be heard in Gundam Seed Destiny when Heine is fighting Stella with his Gouf.

On another note, if Ral and Char encounter each other on the battlefield, Ral seems to have no trouble recognising him as Casval Rem Deikun, the child his father rescued. Char asks him to keep this secret to himself, to which the old soldier dutifully agrees. Uncharacteristically, Char apologises for asking (he often uses fairly insulting language when dealing with others, but is noticeably polite with Ral).

M’Quve is a fictional character appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam’s Universal Century (U.C.) timeline.

He was a colonel for the Zeon ground forces under the command of Kycilia Zabi and supervised mining operations and supplies for the war effort. Foppish and somewhat effeminate, M’Quve fancied crystal vases, which he collected, in particular a Song Dynasty porcelain vase he acquired (which he intended to give to Kycilia Zabi as a present). He saw Char Aznable as somewhat of a rival and upstart.

M’Quve, upon destruction of his Odessa Base operating in Europe by the Earth Federation Forces, fled to space where he would eventually meet the White Base and Amuro Ray’s RX-78 Gundam in battle at the Texas Colony. There, M’Quve piloted his melee-customised mobile suit, a prototype YMS-15 Gyan, and faced Ray personally, only to be defeated and killed.

M’Quve was seen in the movie compilations but his death in battle with Amuro Ray was not included. This leads many fans to believe that although he was never seen again, M’Quve survived the One Year War and was instrumental in taking Dozle Zabi’s surviving wife and infant daughter into hiding.

Hiroyuki Kitazume, in his manga Char’s Deleted Affair: Portrait of Young Comet published in Gundam Ace, follows the film continunity and has M’Quve killed early on in the story, during the retreat to Axis.

His name is sometimes romanized as Makube which better suggests the correct pronunciation (”Mah-koo-bay”). In the TV series Mobile Suit Gundam, and the movie compilations, he was voiced by Kaneto Shiozawa. Due to Shiozawa’s death in 2000, the newly remastered Japanese language editions of the Gundam trilogy had Masahiko Tanaka substitute for M’Quve along with all of the surviving original actors to reprise their roles.

In Gihren’s Greed, the Zeon player can override M’Quve on numerous occasions, including forcing him to turn over Doms to Ramba Ral (thus giving the veteran the edge he needs to defeat the Gundam) and belaying his attempt to launch nukes during Operation Odessa.

Should the player allow M’Quve to do as he pleases during said operation, there is a good chance his nukes will devastate the Zeon forces as well. If this occurs, the player is given the option to imprison M’Quve for war crimes. His last words in Mobile Suit Gundam TV series was, “Uragan, give the vase to Lady Kycilia, it’s very valuable!”
