The Saruyama Alliance (猿山連合, Saruyama Rengō) is an alliance that was formed between three Pirate captains from the anime and manga One Piece, between Montblanc Cricket and Cricket’s surrogate sons “Salvage King” Masira and his brother Shōjō.
Cricket arrived on the island of Jaya several years ago before the present storyline. The alliance formed sometime after Cricket’s own crew abandoned him for trying to prove whether or not his ancestor Montblanc Norland was a liar and began the search for the lost city of gold that had supposedly sunk into the ocean. Shortly afterwards, he met Masira and Shōjō, two fans of the classic children’s book about Norland, who wanted to help him find the city, and the alliance was formed.
Masira and his crew are experts at recovering sunken ships from the bottom of the ocean while Shōjō and his crew are experts at using sonar to locate things hidden under the waves. They claim the island of Jaya as their base and the waters around it their territory and attack anyone who tries to interfere with their goal to find the lost city of gold.
In the end, the city of gold they were looking for was actually floating in the sky the entire time, as proven when Luffy rings the golden bell. With Cricket’s ancestor Norland proven right, even if it’s only known by them, they decide to look for another dream to pursue.
The Straw Hats first encounter Masira when they try to salvage a ship that fell from the sky, and they later meet Shojo while travelling to Cricket’s house, coming into conflict both times. However, after saving Cricket’s life from decompression sickness, they become friends. The Saruyama Alliance helps the Straw Hats begin their journey to Sky Island. However, while the Straw Hats were in Jaya’s forest looking for a “South Bird”, the Bellamy Pirates attacked, stealing their gold artifacts that acted as their only proof that the city existed. Angered, Luffy defeated Bellamy and returned the gold to Cricket, before they set off for the sky.
At the end of the Skypiea Arc, Luffy rings the golden bell of Shandia, signaling, among many other things, that the city of gold exists. With one dream resolved, the Saruyama Alliance decides to move on to another.
The Alliance has two flags: one for Masira and one for Shōjō:
- Masira’s flag is a baboon head with two bananas in place of crossbones.
- Shōjō’s flag is an orangutan head with crossbones behind it.
Due to his crew deserting him Cricket doesn’t appear to have any ships. Masira’s ship is a large vessel with a crane system used for underwater recovery. The machinery resembles a monkey with cymbals. The ship also has palm trees on it. Shojo’s ship has giant trees for masts. The side of the ship has several ladders so that the Utan divers can get in and out of the water easily. Additionally it’s figure head resembles a monkey’s face.
Montblanc Cricket (モンブラン・クリケット, Monburan Kuriketto) is an inhabitant of Jaya Island, living in a small home behind the façade of a castle. Due to the (false) story about his ancestor Montblanc Norland, he is looked down upon and has become bitter to the point that he hates his ancestor. To that end, he aims to prove that the city of gold existed by diving into the ocean day in, day out, searching for any proof of it. He is later joined by Masira and Shōjō, two fans of the fairy tale who would become his surrogate sons. The Straw Hat Pirates soon come to him for more information on the “Island in the Sky,” and how to reach it. However, Bellamy the Hyena comes soon afterwards and steals all of Cricket’s hard earned artefacts that he found in the ocean. Luffy gets them back, however, and Cricket, Masira, and Shōjō modify the Going Merry so it can travel in the sky. Near the end of the Skypiea arc, Cricket hears the ringing of the golden bell (courtesy of Luffy), proving that Skypiea and the gold city really do exist. Thanking the Straw Hats and relieved that they are all right in the sky, he, Masira, and Shōjō begin to think of a new dream to pursue.
In the English version of the PS2/Gamecube game One Piece Pirates’ Carnival, Cricket has been renamed “Mombran Cricket”. The “r” has also been taken out of “Norland”, making it “Noland”. For some reason Funimation has kept this name except it is now Monbran Cricket, this was recently stated by Nico Robin in episode 107(147).
Known as the “Salvage King”, Masira is the head of a simian salvage operation near Jaya Island. He is also the brother to Shōjō and a surrogate son of Montblanc Cricket. He comes into the story during the Jaya arc after a huge ship fell from the sky and into the ocean, and it is here where he first meets the Straw Hats. But a sea monster and “giants” appearing in the ocean interrupts them and he winds up on the Going Merry ship after they escape, but he quickly kicked off, literally. After the Straw-Hats meet Cricket, Masira and Shōjō (whom they run into a while later) act a bit more friendly towards them and help modify the Going Merry so it can travel to Skypiea. He is the most ape-like of the two brothers, and even enjoys being compared to a monkey.
He is the brother to Masira and a follower of Montblanc Cricket. He and Masira were both fans of the fairy tale concerning Cricket’s ancestor, Montblanc Norland. Like his brother, he meets the Straw-Hats on bad terms and forced them to retreat when he used a sound attack that almost destroyed the Going Merry. After the Straw-Hats meet Cricket, he and Masira become more friendly with them and help modify the Going Merry so it can travel to Skypiea. He claims to have never cut his hair, and because of this views himself worthy of taking Crocodile’s place as a Shichibukai. He also has a habit of saying he’s “edgy” whenever almost anything happens.
The three captains themselves are weak by the Grand Line standards but their bond as a group is strong. They suffer heavy beatings from Bellamy the Hyena and his crew but still manage to work on the Going Merry for the Straw Hat crew afterwards. There is also renewed spirit amongst them after Luffy returns with the gold Bellamy stole during his attack. No new information has been recovered concerning the actions of the alliance after the Skypeia Arc.
Masira’s ship has a giant monkey statue with cymbals at the front. This statue can be lowered into the water to grab a net containing a sunken ship. Masira and his crew then blow large amounts of air through the monkey to lift the ship to the surface.
Shōjō’s crew can locate objects underwater through echolocation. First, Shōjō screams into a microphone, which projects sounds underwater, and divers surrounding the ship confirm any echoes. The divers are so skilled that they can identify objects simply from these sounds, such as identifying Sea Kings.

The Red Haired Pirate Crew (赤髪海賊団, Akagumi Kaizoku-dan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Captain Red-Haired Shanks.
Not much is currently known about them, though some of the crew are very famous. What is also known about them is that their Captain Shanks knows Mihawk, whom he used to duel on a regular basis before losing his arm, and he seems to be on friendly (or at least neutral) terms with Mihawk. Shanks used to be a trainee on Gol. D Roger’s crew with Buggy the Clown, and Buggy forever hates him for botching one of his treasure hunts by “making” him eat a Devil Fruit (though it was really entirely Buggy’s own fault).
While they appear in only small scenes normally at the end of arcs, they seem to be an ongoing background plot throughout the entire story. They are a very laid back band of pirates who are almost always seen partying and drinking alcoholic beverages whenever they make an appearance. They seem much friendlier compared to other pirate bands seen in the series: they hung around Luffy’s hometown for a roughly a year without complaints from the local villagers.
The Red Hairs are the first pirate crew to appear in the series and are the main influences of both Luffy and Usopp’s journey. Ten years before the present timeline, they spent a year in his town and became very good friends with Luffy, which led to him wanting to be part of their crew, but Shanks told him that he was too weak, which angered him. Shanks was also the one who, unintentionally, supplied Luffy with his Devil Fruit. When a group of mountain bandits hassled the crew in a bar, they didn’t fight back, but once they left, they immediately burst out laughing. Luffy was angry at them for not fighting back, not realizing there was no need to.
Later after the bandits showed up again when the crew were away, Luffy overheard them saying bad things about Shanks and his crew so Luffy stepped in and tried to defend his friends. The bandits easily subdued him, and the Red Hairs finally struck in order to save his life, easily defeating them. However, the leader, Higuma the Bear, had escaped out to sea in order to kill Luffy, only to be eaten by a Sea King and as Luffy, who could no longer swim due to his Devil Fruit, sank into the water, Shanks pulled him up. Though the captain’s left arm was bitten off by the Sea King, he showed no sign of pain or distress, telling Luffy, “It’s just an arm”, and scared the monster away by simply glaring at it. Later, when the crew finally decided to leave, Luffy decided he would become a pirate on his own, with his own crew. He declared his intentions to become an even greater pirate than Shanks and to become the Pirate King, so an amused Shanks gave his signature straw hat to Luffy, which he said to give back to him once he surpassed him.
Usopp’s connection to the Red Hairs is through his father, Yasopp. When Usopp was young, Yasopp left his family in order to go out to sea, as urged by his wife. Due to how he was raised, Usopp understood that his father left to pursue his dream and harbors no ill will against him–in fact, he wants to become a great sniper and man of the sea like him.
They make their first appearance in the present timeline after Luffy gets his first bounty and celebrate Luffy’s arrival in the world of piracy. Later on, they contact Whitebeard because they want Whitebeard to stop Ace from pursuing Blackbeard, afraid that Ace might not be strong enough to face Blackbeard. The World Government fears that the two crews may end up joining together, but have decided to simply observe their actions for now. Recently, it has been revealed that the Redhairs have broken through a government blockade and have reached Whitebeard, finally allowing for two of the pirate crews of the Four Emperors to meet.
Shanks’s flag is a standard Jolly Roger, similar in appearance to the flag of Calico Jack. It has 3 slashes on the left eye and two swords in place of crossbones. The three slashes represent the ones Shanks has across his left eye while the swords represent the fact he is a swordsman.
The Red-Hair Pirates have been known to posses two ships over a period of ten years. The one from ten years ago (named “Red Force” ) was a fairly big dragon themed vessel with nothing truly remarkable. The current one is similar to the old one but much bigger and more ornamented as well as possessing palm trees.
Ben Beckman (ベン・ベックマン, Ben Bekkuman) is the first mate in Red-Haired Shanks’ pirate crew, he possesses astonishing wisdom and strength, and acts as advisor to his captain. When first seen in the manga and anime, he wears his black hair in a ponytail, and is never seen without his rifle nearby or a cigarette in his mouth. Later on in the series, his hair has turned grey and is cut short, and he has a large X-shaped scar on his left temple. These changes might be due to either some of the bigger battles he had or due to early aging. He appears to be a lot less fun-loving than the other members of the crew but a lot more relaxed, acting as the level headed member, similar to Zoro. It appears he is quite strong, wiping out a large group of Higuma the Bear’s mates rather quickly.
Lucky Roux (ラッキー・ルウ, Rakkī Ruu) is the fat member of the pirate crew and is always seen eating a rack of meat. Lucky is also the first person to actually kill someone in One Piece and sets the stage for the series; a pirate’s life is a dangerous one.
- Note: In the 4kids dub he does not kill the bandit, instead claiming that a cap gun was used.
Incidentally, a roux is a sauce or soup base used in French and Creole dishes. Although his name can be either “Lucky Roux” or “Lucky Roo” due to the “x” being silent, his name is most commonly romanized as “Lucky Roux.” He is called “Lucky Roux” in the English One Piece Collectible Card game as well.
Yasopp (ヤソップ, Yasoppu) is a gifted sharp-shooter capable of shooting the legs off an ant at 100 feet without harming the rest of it. He is the father of Usopp and was one of Luffy’s favorite members of the Red-Haired pirates. It is unknown whether he knows that his son has recently become a pirate and that his wife is dead. Before, his name was written on his headband, but currently he doesn’t have his headband anymore, but grew dreadlocks and tattoed his name on his right arm.
- Note: In the anime only, Yasopp had a duel with Daddy the Father. Daddy lost against Yasopp and wanted to be killed since he lost the duel but Yasopp let him live when he saw a picture of his daughter.
In the English Dub by 4Kids, Yasopp and Usopp have similar voices and are done by the same voice actor.
(94,000,000 beli bounty) Rockstar (ロックスター, Rokkusutā) is a newer member of Red-Haired Shanks pirate crew. Shanks sent him to deliver a message to Whitebeard, which the pirate captain promptly ripped up, going along with Shanks’ prediction anyway. Even so, Rockstar wanted to fight Whitebeard to reclaim his honor, but Shanks told him it was no big deal and to pull back.
Rockstar has only appeared in one anime episode so far. Even though little is known about him, it can be assumed he is quite powerful since his bounty is so high. Together with the info that he is a new member it could mean that many of Shanks’ nameless members could also have high bounties, maybe a little hint about how great Shanks’ power could be.
Rockstar’s character and personality is possibly a joke referring to old rockstars who frequently try to see if people remember them. When he arrives on Whitebeard’s ship, he asks some of Whitebeard’s crew if anyone remembered him from his solo days. Despite his high bounty, everyone he asked replied with a surprising (or unsurprising) “no.”
The strength of the crew as a whole is unknown. But Rockstar, a recent addition to Shanks’ crew, has a bounty of 94,000,000 and is still considered to be a rookie. While it is yet to determine if many of Shanks’ other crew members have bounties, if Rockstar’s bounty is any indication to go by, their crew is indeed very strong.
The first hint at their crews strength came early on in the story from Luffy’s past. The bandit leader Higuma the bear tried to threaten Shanks with his 8,000,000 beli bounty but Shanks was not afraid of the man and even took having a bottle of sake and his plate of food being smashed and split over him. Then later on Ben Beckman took on the bandit’s men and wiped them all out with ease telling Higuma afterwards that if he wanted to take them on they should bring a warship as a back-up. Moments later Shanks did something shocking while rescuing Luffy from the sea - he scared away a Sea King just by staring at it.
When Mihawk, one of the Shichibukai, brought news of Luffy’s rise to fame, the younger, weaker members of his crew appear terrified of the great Swordsman and approached him with caution. However, the senior members (including Shanks, Ben Beckman, Yasopp and Lucky Roux) appeared not bothered at all by his visit. This is possibly because of their captain’s friendly relations with him, but also likely that this is because they are around his league also.
Shanks does not fear Whitebeard, the world’s strongest rated pirate whereas some pirate Captains quiver at the mere mention of his name. Rockstar also used his captain’s name to plea to Whitebeard the importance of a letter he delivered to him as well as wanting to challenge Whitebeard’s men for insulting his honor.
The final clue to the crew’s strength is that the World Government greatly fears what would happen if his and Whitebeard’s crew joined up.
Recently, it has been revealed Shanks is one of the Four Emperors of the second half of the Grand Line, along with Whitebeard. This makes the Red Haired pirate Crew one of the four strongest pirate groups in the Grand Line. They were also able to come in contact with Whitebeard, by going through a naval blockade the Navy had set up, under the order of the Five Elder Stars. Furthermore, he is still able to fight one-on-one against Whitebeard, despite the loss of his good arm; their current battle appears to have managed to split the clouds apart.

The Foxy Pirates (フォクシー海賊団, Fokushī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Foxy the Silver Fox. The Foxy Pirates are composed mostly of crewmen won by Foxy the Silver Fox through the Davy Back Fight. Despite claiming to be honorable, they always find a way to cheat in their games.
On Long Ring Long Land, the Foxy Pirates challenge the Straw Hats to a Davy Back Fight, which Luffy accepts. Throughout all of the games, the Foxy Pirates find ways to cheat, but in the manga they only manage to win one of the three games despite this. In the anime, they win three of the six games. After the final game, a Captain vs. Captain boxing match, Luffy replaces Foxy’s old flag with a badly drawn version of it, but otherwise lets them go with no harm intended.
In the anime, Foxy appears again. As it turns out, one of the captains he won from one of the previous games has rebelled and taken over the ship, so Foxy asks for the Straw Hats help. However, even after winning back the ship, Foxy decides to get revenge by putting them through several deathtraps in his ship. However, the Straw Hats defeat him once again and that is the last time they have been seen so far.
Foxy’s original flag was a standard Jolly Roger with fox ears and Foxy’s unique nose, with the word ‘FOXY’ written on it.
The current one is a very badly drawn version of the previous flag done by Monkey D. Luffy with the characters for the Japanese word for ‘fox’ (kitsune) written on it.
Foxy’s ship is a large Fox themed galleon. It contains many interesting devices and mechanisms. the fox heads mouth works like an elevator, its deck has small swiviel cannons and arrow launchers. Inside it has a hall way that leads out the side of the ship, a room with a spike covered floor, and a special combat gym with Foxy’s Gorilla Puncher robot.
Foxy the Silver Fox (銀ギツネのフォクシー Gin-gitsune no Fokushī) is the captain of his pirate crew with a 24,000,000 beli bounty and a cheater and a trickster who participates in the Davy Back Fight, a contest between pirate crews where the winning team can steal crew members from the losing team. Most members of Foxy’s crew joined him because he won them in this contest. Though he acts supremely confident most of the time and seems quite fond of himself, Foxy is extremely sensitive to insults or criticism. All it takes is a few kind words from his second-in-command, Porche, to perk him up again. He also has a resembling to Wario from Nintendo’s Mario universe, with the same kind of nose and his habit of cheating.
Foxy ate the Devil Fruit Noro Noro no Mi (ノロノロの実 Slow Slow) which allows him to fire microscopic particles that can slow down his enemies or other objects. When he cheats, he frequently uses these powers to increase the impact of his attacks or stop his opponents in their tracks.
During the Davy Back Fight, the Straw Hat Crew lose Chopper in the first match, but win him and the horse of a native islander in the next 2 games. Foxy, upset about this, demands a rematch, during which, Foxy’s crew take Robin and Chopper in the first 2 games. The last game is set on the Foxy Ship, and rules allow the contestants, Foxy and Luffy, to use whatever they find on the ship. Due to Nami’s normal sly thinking, she convinces Foxy to increase the bet in the last game: If the Straw Hat’s win, they get Robin and Chopper back along with 500 of Foxy’s men (his decision to make it fair) and if Foxy’s win, then they get all of the Straw Hat crew and all of their descendents till 500 in total have joined. Luffy manages to beat Foxy’s Noro Noro power by using a mirror he found on Foxy’s ship, reflecting the Noroma photons back at him, then delivering a final blow with a 30 second delay.
Foxy the Silver Fox is a playable character in the One Piece Grand Battle Rush (Japanese version only).
Porche (ポルチェ, Poruche) is considered an idol by the crew and is loved by all of the men. She is very loyal to Foxy and also serves as his comfort when he has suffered an insult. Porche has a huge obsession with Tony Tony Chopper since he’s so cute(though only in brain-point otherwise she has no interest). Her weapon is a baton-like rod that shoots shurikens covered with flowers (”Flower Shuriken”). She enters the Donut Race event along with Kapoty and Monda.
In the anime only, Porche can utilise the technique “Flower Hypnosis”, which causes its victims to fall asleep for a while. This is used to great advantage in the Roller Race event (which is also exclusive to the anime).
Kapoty (カポーティ, Kapōti) is a fish-man who participates in the Donut race with Porche and Monda against the Straw Hat Pirates. He is a swordfish fish-man who uses Fishman Karate, including a karate chop that can split the ocean.
Hamburg (ハンバーグ, Hanbāgu) is a huge monkey like human who is almost always seen laughing. He often carries Foxy around and tends to help him cheat. Hamburg is also the leader of the “Groggy Monsters”, despite being the smallest, and during the Groggy Ring is defeated by a series of kicks from Sanji. However, in the filler, he returns to compete in other games. His weapons are two large bats, despite there being a rule against weapons in the Groggy Ring.
Second in size only to Big Pan, Pickles (ピクルス, Pikurusu) The “Tackle Demon” is the huge, two-mace wielding member of the Groggy Monsters. Like the others on his team, he tends to laugh for no reason. During the Groggy Ring, he is beaten by Sanji when he kicks him off the field & into the referee, knocking him out. In filler he reappears in other games. His weapons are two spiked shoulder pads, increasing his attacks for tackles.
The final and largest member of the Groggy Monsters, Big Pan (ビッグパン, Biggu Pan) is a wotan, a half-fishman, half-giant. His half-fish species is mudfish, and his skin is extremely slippery, making him resistant to physical attacks. During the Groggy Ring, where he acted as his team’s ball, he was defeated by Zoro launching a spinning, sword-wielding Pickles into him, then Sanji’s Anti-Manner Kick Course, followed by Zoro smashing him into the goal ring. He continues participating in anime filler, however. In Pirate Dodgeball, he throws the ball so hard that it takes out not only Usopp but the entirety of his own team barring himself, Hamburg, and Foxy. In Red Light-Green Light, he is taken out early when he and Pickles fall into the sea. His weapons are two huge pans which he uses to crush his enemies.
He makes an appearance in One Piece Grand Battle! Rush as a hazard in the Groggy Ring. He throws axes, and spits Pickles out of his mouth.
The announcer and commentator of the Davy Back Fight events, Itomimizu (イトミミズ, Itomimizu) is often seen riding a very large bird named Chuchuun to get a better view of the action. His name means tubifex worm, leading to many fans referring to him as simply ‘Tubifex’.
Monda (モンダ, Monda) is a Star Shark who assisted Porche and Kapoty in the Donut Race, pulling the “Cutie Wagon” across the water. Can perform a fusion with Kapoty in order to create a being with the strength of a merman and the tail of a shark.
Other crewmembers
- Filler Only: Masshikaku (マっシカク, whose name translates as ‘Really Square’), Chiqicheetah (who has apparently eaten the Neko Neko no Mi, Model Cheetah (ネコネコの実 モデル チーター Cat Cat Fruit, Model: Cheetah), though this is never explicitly stated), the mollusk fish-man Juubei, the sword-armed fishman Girarin, and others.
- Manga Only: Sonieh, the leader of Foxy’s 50-man team of carpenters, Donoban the “battle-ready mechanic” (who bears a slight resemblance to Franky), & Gina-chan the “down-right sexy” carpenter.
See Tony Tony Chopper. Chopper was in this crew for a brief period because of the Straw Hat pirates defeat in the Donut Race. He did not enjoy being a part of the crew but Zoro’s words made him take it like a man. He is soon after won back into the Straw hat crew when Sanji and Zoro win the Groggy Ring match. In anime only, he rejoins the crew again when the straw hats lost in the hide and seek match but was soon after won back along with nico robin.
See Nico Robin. Nico Robin was on the crew for a brief period and in the anime only. She was taken from the StrawHat Crew when they lost in pirate dodgeball. She was won back along with Tony Tony Chopper.
Foxy has won 920 Davy Back Fights which has won him a large crew of 499 souls. Despite their origins, most of the crew are indeed glad to serve under Foxy. The Groggy Monsters, made up of Hamburg, Pickles, and Big Pan, are very powerful and managed to give Zoro and Sanji a very hard time; and the captain is no slouch in terms of fighting either. However, none of the other crewmembers seem to be particularly skilled, and even the stronger fighters rely on cheating and tricks in order to win.
In the anime only, technically most of the crew (497 out of 499) would have become Straw Hat Pirates after Luffy had won them in the Davy Back Fight, however Luffy dismisses them soon after. Foxy eventually wins them back.
The name of Foxy’s pirate ship is “Sexy Foxy”.

Don Krieg’s Pirate Armada (海賊艦隊, Kaizoku Kantai) is a fictional band of pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Don Krieg.
They consisted of a fleet of 50 pirate ships and 5,000 pirates that posed as a fearsome force in the East Blue until Don Krieg attempted to conquer the Grand Line. Their crew was wiped out by Hawk-Eyes Mihawk, leaving one sole remaining ship that managed to escape, carrying Don Krieg and his surviving crew members away from the Grand Line.
The crew is first seen when a starving Gin goes into the floating restaurant Baratie and demands food. Due to his lack of money and status as a pirate, he is kicked out, but Sanji takes pity on him and gives him free food. Delighted, Gin returns to his crew and brings all of them to the Baratie, too. When Don Krieg recovers his strength, he reveals his intentions to steal the Baratie and use it to return to the Grand Line. This shocks his crew, who were both feeling gratitude towards the chefs and didn’t want to go back to that pirate graveyard, but out of fear of their captain, they comply.
However, as luck would have it, Mihawk trailed them and wrecks their last ship. However, once he defeats Roronoa Zoro, who had challenged him to a duel, he decides that he has had enough fun and leaves everyone to their own devices. Krieg decides to continue his attack. When Gin is forced to kill Sanji, however, he comes to a tough decision and goes against his orders. In response to this, Krieg uses a poisonous gas in an attempt to kill him.
After a long battle, Luffy manages to defeat Krieg, but even after the battle is over, Krieg unconsciously gets up and demands to continue the battle, only to be knocked down by Gin. Gathering the entire crew in a small boat, Gin declares that as a dying wish, he wants to bring his captain back to the Grand Line like he wanted, and sets off. It is unknown if they have survived.
Krieg’s flag is a standard Jolly Roger with two hourglasses to the sides, to show to their victims that their time is up.
Don Krieg originally possesed a fleet of 50 vessels. However, after Mihawks attack, only his flagship was left. The Flagship was a large wild-cat themed galleon with many big cannons. However, by the time of the Baratie arc it had been badly damaged by battle and weather following its trip to the Grand Line. Its name was revealed in the One Piece Yellow Book to be the Dreadnought Saber. It had a variety of colors in its paint scheme, the dominant one being purple with yellow, off-white, and green. While the rest of the fleet isn’t shown, from the flashbacks it’s revealed that they were similar in theme and colors. The Dreadnought Saber was sunk by Mihawk during Krieg’s attack on Baratie and Krieg himself had already written her off.
Don Krieg (首領・クリーク, Don Kurīku), of the Pirate Armada, was (militarily) the most powerful pirate in the East Blue, one of the four seas of the One Piece world. Although Krieg had a lower bounty than Arlong, his fleet of 50 ships and over 5,000 pirates, combined with active pillaging, forced the Navy to view Krieg as a greater threat. Krieg was well known for underhanded tactics; when he was first starting out as a pirate, he stole a Navy ship and, under the guise of a navy flag, approached towns without suspicion. Krieg’s massive armada gave him the title, “Pirate Admiral Don Krieg”.
Krieg is a typical One Piece villain who displays cruel tendencies, defeating even weak enemies with overwhelming odds. Despite this, he is also known for his ingenuity in battle. He is used to winning and being able to topple any force that goes up against him; this led to his failed attempt to conquer the Grand Line. However, his constant victories and reliance on weapons and odds made him overconfident. He displays some realization that his crew are an important aspect to his efforts and he makes sure they are fed to regain their full strength after Mihawk’s onslaught. However, Don Krieg does not care for his crew and bullies them to fear him as their captain; he punishes those who fail him or show signs of weakness. He dominates his crew with sheer force of personality (He tells Gin to throw away his lifesaving gas mask, in which he does), and he is respected for his enormous material power. Don Krieg even seems strong without his weapons, as it took quite a few of his own crewman to subdue him after Luffy had defeated him.
Don Krieg made a trip to the Grand Line with his fleet, hoping to find the One Piece. On his seventh day in the Grand Line, however, his ships were completely destroyed by Dracule “Hawkeye” Mihawk, one of the Shichibukai. With only one ship remaining in terrible condition, Krieg returned to the East Blue. Krieg soon learned of the Baratie, a restaurant that floats at sea. When Krieg saw the fish-shaped ship, he knew that it would be the perfect ship, for no one would suspect it of being filled with pirates. Unfortunately for Krieg, he arrived at the same time Monkey D. Luffy and his crew were at the restaurant. After a long and intense battle on the wreckage of his old ship, Krieg was eventually defeated by Luffy. Even with this loss, he subconsciously wouldn’t give up and it took his whole crew and a final punch in the gut from his first mate to finally drop him. However, he is still alive, but it is unknown whether when he wakes up that he will go after Luffy.
Krieg wears a gilded suit of steel armour (which may be power armour of some kind) that is filled with hidden weapons, including the dreaded MH5 (a built-in weapon in his shield, that shoots off a poison-gas bomb which could exterminate a town), diamond knuckles (for hand-to-hand combat), spike-covered cape, and a large bladed powerhead, his ‘giant battle spear’. The tip of the spear was ultimately shattered by Luffy, making it useless. Don Krieg’s armour is forged of Wootz steel. His most potent weapon has always been his talent for skullduggery, which seems to have no bounds. His first mate is Gin (Ghin in the English dub) and his second mate is Iron Wall Pearl. He can even convert his shield into a gatling gun that fires sharp stakes that impales Luffy (poison suction cups in the 4Kids dub, though in both One Piece: Grand Adventure and Grand Battle Krieg shoot’s “Nails”). Don Krieg also claimed to be the strongest man in the world, which is clearly an overstatement on his part, though he is strong enough to lift Patty’s attack boat of out the water with one hand, and throw it.
Gin the Man-Demon (鬼人のギン, Kijin no Gin), known as Ghin in the English anime, is Don Krieg’s First Mate. Gin is given a plate of food by Sanji for free when he is starving on the Baratie. When Don Krieg’s forces come to take over the Baratie, Gin is ordered to kill Sanji. Gin, a person who had tortured and killed countless others with his weighted cannonball-tipped tonfas, could not bring himself to kill Sanji (Sanji is the only person to ever treat Gin to an act of kindness). For this, Gin is punished by Don Krieg, who orders him to drop his gas mask while Krieg releases the deadly poison MH5. They find he was always stronger than Krieg and was only living in his shadow, but despite this brush with death, Gin survives, and carries away the defeated Don Krieg (along with the rest of the crew) in a small boat. Thus, fans are not sure if Gin is alive or dead from breathing the poison. Gin said that he now wants to follow in Don Krieg’s footsteps by going to the Grand Line, hoping to see Luffy there.
The Japanese word gin (銀), pronounced with a hard “g”, literally means “silver”, but an “h” was added to the spelling in the English dub. This was probably done because the name’s visual similarity to the English word “gin”, and the likelihood of it being mispronounced as such.
Don Krieg’s second mate, also known as Pearl the Iron Wall (鉄壁のパール, Teppeki no Pāru). A towering man, Pearl’s ensemble includes wearing two iron plates covering his front and backside, as well as two smaller plates with large pearls embedded in them for strong, blunt attacks. Said to have been raised in a jungle. He has a personal bounty of 6 million belli. Pearl is noted to start panicking if he is struck and injured directly, protecting himself by causing friction sparks to ignite his body with a defensive layer of flames. This unusual tactic comes into play when Krieg’s pirates attempt to capture the Baratie, when Pearl fights against Sanji and Luffy. He is initially (and accidentally) knocked out, but soon recovers and thrashes Sanji around (as Gin was holding Zeff hostage). Gin, however, finishes Pearl himself by shattering his iron plate shielding, claiming he reserved the right to kill Sanji himself. In the 4-Kids English dub, he had a “surfer dude” accent. He’s in One Piece: Grand Adventure as a support character.
Don Krieg’s Pirate Armada was militarily the most powerful pirate crew in the East Blue, due to their vast numbers of men, weapons and ships. However, contrary to their reputation as the toughest crew in East Blue, the Krieg Fleet appears to rely on numbers over strength, individual crewmen appearing less skilled than their counterparts in other East Blue crews. They overestimated their crew’s strength against Hawk-Eyes Mihawk and the Grand Line itself. They were finished off by Luffy and Sanji.
Don Krieg himself relied on weaponry, believing with enough weapons you can win anything, a mistake that cost him and his crew victory. Krieg keeps his crew together using fear–despite how mad and ridiculous some of his orders may seem, his crew will follow them out of fear of being killed, which is another factor that limits their strength. However, some crewmates like Gin have genuine respect for Krieg, Krieg himself also understands that without men he can’t progress any further.

The Buggy Pirates (バギー海賊団, Bagī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Captain Buggy the Clown. Their captain Buggy the Clown is a former crewmate of Red-Haired Shanks and has met Whitebeard. He and his crew are currently in the Grand Line seeking revenge against Luffy.
Early One Piece
Oda’s plans for Buggy’s crew were for an animal tamer and a strange swordsman to be part of the crew. When they were first designed, none of the members of Buggy’s crew had names. There was also another unnamed member of Buggy’s crew who was dropped in later versions. Buggy himself was originally called ‘Boogie’.
In another rethink of their design, Zoro was added as a bodyguard of Buggy, but that was scrapped. In this version there was also a Carrier pigeon planned called Hachi who was a Opo bird and he came from the Grand Line. Hachi was later scrapped from the final version of the crew. At this point in the design, Buggy remained unchanged.
One Piece Color Walk 01 also depicts Eichiro Oda’s concept designs for other possible crewmembers, who didn’t make the cut, so to speak. These include a fat, checkerboard-skinned man, apparently named “Big Top”, and a mime-like character, apparently named “Pantomime”.
Buggy’s flag is a standard Jolly Roger with two black slashes on the eyes from the top to bottom and to the left and right, as well as a large red clown nose similar to Buggy’s.
The Buggy Pirates are first seen wrecking a small town only to be defeated by Luffy and his crew. While Nami tied up Buggy’s main body, Luffy sent his head, hands, and feet flying all the way to another island. Through a series of adventures, Buggy manages to recruit a transformed Alvida to his cause, regroups with his crew, and recombines with the rest of his body. They follow the Straw Hats to Loguetown, where Buggy manages to trap Luffy onto the execution platform, but before he can lop off his head, a bolt of lightning strikes his swords, destroying the platform and letting Luffy escape. After this event, the Buggy Pirates follow the Straw Hats into the Grand Line, but they are taking a different path than them.
They were last seen leaving Skull island. Upon leaving they meet up with Portgas D. Ace, who decides to help them look for Luffy, apparently unaware of Buggy’s goal. Buggy is also unaware of Ace being Luffy’s brother. It’s clear that Ace had later left The Buggy Pirates to continue his search for Blackbeard. Buggy’s current plan is to defeat Luffy and have his Bounty increased as result.
Crew Information
Buggy the Clown is the captain of the Buggy Band of Pirates. Buggy has a large red nose and wears clown paint. He has the powers of a Devil fruit, the Bara Bara no Mi (Chop Chop Fruit), which allows him to detach parts of his body, control them, and then reattach them.
Mohji (モージ, Mōji) is the first mate of Buggy’s Crew. Quite pompous and at times silly, Mohji has the ability to control any animal he wishes, or so he says. He has yet to prove it in the series outside of his pet, a lion named Richie, who is more like another crew member than just a pet. Mohji usually opts to use him in battle rather than fight himself. He is, however, fast and agile, and very skilled with a whip. He is also responsible for burning things, such as the pet-food shop and the Going Merry.
In his first appearance, Mohji was sent by Buggy to capture Roronoa Zoro. However, Monkey D. Luffy got in his way, who eventually defeated Mohji after he burned down a pet-food shop that belonged to a recently deceased man and his still-living dog.
After Buggy’s defeat Mohji and Cabaji fought over leadership of the group. They were equally matched, and fought for several hours. The battle ended when a sleep-walking Richie knocked them both unconscious, taking over leadership himself. However, Richie and the pirates were kidnapped by a cannibalistic group, but saved by Buggy, Alvida, Mohji, and Cabaji.
Mohji later participated in the attack on Loguetown. It was his job to burn down the Straw-Hat’s boat, which he failed to do as soon as it started to rain. Nami and Usopp found him and Richie, but as soon as Mohji sent Richie to attack, Usopp used an egg to distract the lion. The Marines showed up, and started shooting at everyone. Mohji was able to dodge the bullets and flee the scene with the rest of Buggy’s group.
Much later, Mohji reappeared with the group as they travel in the Grand Line and find a mysterious man named Portgas D. Ace. He was also in the TV Special that featured the One Piece characters as ninjas, and appeared in several video games. Every time Mohji appears in the series for an arc, his hairstyle changes. During the Buggy arc, his hair was shaped like a teddy bear; the Loguetown arc had him wearing a pink helmet with bunny ears sticking out; and when the group makes it into the Grand Line, his hair is shaped like a lion’s mane.
Cabaji (カバジ, Kabaji) is the second mate in Buggy’s crew as well as their primary swordsman who combines it with acrobatics (mostly on a unicycle) to fight his enemies. He fights with Roronoa Zoro no sooner than after being introduced and plays dirty by kicking Zoro’s wounds whenever he has the chance. But once Cabaji is knocked off his unicycle, he is easily defeated by Zoro’s ‘Oni Giri’ which cuts open his chest.
After Buggy’s crew was defeated by Luffy, he fought with the ‘other’ first mate Mohji for the title for the next captain–both were knocked out by a sleepwalking Richie, who gained the title (though lost it just as quick). However, he returned to his former position when Buggy resurfaced.
During the Loguetown attack, Cabaji accompanied Buggy and Alvida to fight against the Straw Hats and Navy. However, despite wanting to have a rematch with Zoro, he didn’t get a chance to do so.
In the now defunct 4kids dub Cabaji is given a heavy greek accent
Traveling Companions
Alvida (アルビダ Arubida) was the obese female captain of the Alvida Pirates Crew. Named after a real-life pirate like many others in the series, Alvida was named after a female pirate named Alvida . According to One Piece: Pirates Carnival, her last name is “Queen”, but this was never mentioned in the manga or the anime. Despite her girth and poor complexion, she fancied herself the most beautiful woman in all Four Seas; those who disagreed would be bludgeoned with her iron club. In the 4kids dub she is given a scratchey and heavy western accent (heavier then Nico Robin’s); 4kids is well known to give accents based on the clothes character’s wear. When Koby mistakenly boarded her ship, she intimidated him into becoming her cabin boy. She dislikes filth and laziness and often forced her crew to clean the ship from stem to stern.
After losing to Monkey D. Luffy, she joins Buggy the Clown and returns with the power of the Sube Sube no Mi (スベスベの実; Smooth Smooth Fruit), which makes most attacks that are meant for the user to slip off, making herself the first character that has eaten a Devil Fruit after encountering the Straw Hat Pirates. Eating the Sube Sube no Mi made Alvida slim, attractive, and immune to most physical attacks, as they literally “slip” off her. Due to the beauty gained from eating the fruit, Alvida has been able to use seduction to get her way, as evidenced when she was nearly arrested in Loguetown. Though less stout, she still wields her iron club as effortlessly as before.
As most villains, Alvida has a bounty on her head. Her 5,000,000 Belli bounty has been in effect prior to her eating a Devil Fruit and her encounter with the marines in Lougetown, so it is currently unknown if it has been increased since then. Her name is spelled “Aluvida” on her bounty poster (however, u syllables are often silent in the Japanese language).
Since Luffy was the first and only man to have beaten her, she has become infatuated with him. In order to test his worth, she helped Buggy attempt to execute him in Loguetown. When the execution is foiled, Alvida becomes determined to make Luffy her man. Since Lougetown, she seems to have abandoned her own crew and even her own ship for Buggy’s Band of Pirates. People used to say she was the most beautiful woman in the world to avoid being hit by her club; these days they really mean it.
The crew, being one of the first to appear, is initially one of the weaker crews in the One Piece world. They were defeated by the Straw Hats pirates in their early days when only Luffy, Nami and Zoro were members and later were defeated in Loguetown by the Straw Hats and the Marines. It is possible, however, that they have grown in strength since then. One hint of this is that in Loguetown, Cabaji unveils a new technique to take out several of the Marines. Although most average pirate crews simply cannot survive on the Grand Line, they seem to be perfectly capable of operating on it. The fact that their crew currently consists of not one, but two Devil Fruit users, Buggy and Alvida, with the former of the two not only having the experience of sailing on the Grand Line once before but also being a trainee on board of Gold Roger’s crew, puts Buggy’s Band of Pirates on par with most other Grand Line crews.

The Blackbeard pirates (黒ひげ海賊団, Kurohige Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Blackbeard.
Their captain, Blackbeard was originally a member of Whitebeard’s band of pirates (and Ace’s subordinate) until he quit and killed a crewmate, heading out on his own and forming his own crew. Blackbeard is now one of the Shichibukai, and is searching for high bounty heads to defeat in order to make a name for himself.
The first time the crew is mentioned is by Dalton. They are said to have ransacked the kingdom of Drum, and upon seeing their immense power, king Wapol, fled without even fighting back. In Alabasta, when the Straw Hats meet up with Portgas D. Ace, it is revealed that Ace is hunting him down for what he did to his crewmates.
The crew marks its first visual appearance in Jaya, where they are playing “games” of fate, such as handing out explosive apples to shooting birds to see which ones die quickly and testing strength. When Luffy meets Blackbeard himself in a bar, they at first seem to have the exact opposite opinions. While Luffy hates the bar’s pie, Blackbeard loves it, and while Luffy loves one of the bar’s drinks, Blackbeard hates it, which leads to them challenging each other to a fight, but they decide not to go through with it when Nami points out that they are fighting for no reason. Later on, after the Bellamy Pirates taunt them for believing in Sky Island, Blackbeard assures the Straw Hats that it does exist and in response to the notion of the “New Age”, states that people will never stop dreaming. Because of this, it is not yet known whether Blackbeard is truly evil or just misguided. When Blackbeard finds out about Luffy’s high bounty, he and his crew try to capture him, but the Straw Hats are launched into the sky by Knock-Up Stream before they can make an attempt.
Recently the entire Blackbeard crew, including Laffite, have finally encountered Ace. Ace defeats them easily, but Teach reveals his devil fruit. Ace and Blackbeard both battle, and Blackbeard clearly has the upper hand, but the fates of both pirates are unknown after two of their powerful attacks collide at the end of the battle. Ace’s hat lying on the ground at the end of the battle is said to be a likely signification that Blackbeard had won the battle {this is supported by how Kuma asks Nami about Ace and then speeks with Gecko Moria about Blackbeard becoming a shichibukai and since one needs a reputation to become one the only logical reason is blackbeard killing ace.}.
According to Van Auger, they are also not too far from Enies Lobby. It is still unknown at this time if they will still continue to pursue Luffy, though it’s quite possible considering Blackbeard’s hidden agenda that Shanks and Whitebeard discussed. Currently, Blackbeard is attempting to become, or is, more powerful than even Whitebeard.
While their role so far has been that of secondary villains, it seems clear that they will play a major role sometime in the future.
Blackbeard’s flag is that of three skulls–one looking left, one looking forward, and one looking right.
The crew’s ship is a giant raft with no extras except a number of cannons in the center of the logs. During the Jaya arc the ship was torn apart by Knock Up Stream, But considering it was made of logs and the fact Blackbeard and his crew are on the move it’s possible the ship was repaired, or they found a replacement.
Marshall D. Teach
Captain
Also known as blackbeard Teach betrayed Whitebeard’s crew to form his own, ironically it was called the blackbeard pirates. Teach posseses great strength, comarable to that of a shichibukai, and has eaten the Yami Yami No Mi (dark dark fruit). he has been accepted to join the Shichibukai.
Jesus Burgess (ジーザス・バージェス, Jīzasu Bājesu), nicknamed “The Champion”, claims himself a champion because he stands on top of buildings and challenges random people to fights. He appears to be based off of Mexican wrestlers, as both his name and face mask are Spanish in origin. He is extremely strong, enough to shrug off Ace Hiken (Firefist) blast and to fight Ace by throwing a building on him. He has also shown to be quite level-minded and serious, as he berated Blackbeard for his easy-going attitude after the crew’s failure to capture Luffy, ironically similar to Zoro.
His name is perhaps based on that of real life pirate, Samuel Burgess. In the English version of One Piece: Pirates’ Carnival, he has been named G. Zass Burgess. In the funimation dub, his name is pronounced as “hay-soos” instead of “gee-sis”
Van Auger
Sniper
- Seiyuu: Masaya Takatsuka
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): ?
Auger (ヴァン・オーガー, Van Ōgā), nicknamed “The Supersonic”, is first seen in the Jaya arc shooting down seagulls from a distance so far that the Straw Hat Pirates, who were watching, couldn’t even see the island he was on. When fighting Ace, he moved and shot extremely fast. This was shown when he hit 2 shots on Ace in a second (1 on his forehead and other in his chest) and then escaped from Ace’s fire shots. His velocity can be compared to that of Usopp’s. Van Auger appears calm and analytic even during battle as he deduced that words couldn’t calm Ace and he was the first to attack. Auger comes from Auge, the German word for eye, and can also derive from the real life pirate, John Auger.
In the English version of One Piece: Pirates’ Carnival, Van Auger has been named Van Ogre.
Doc Q (ドクQ Doku Kyū) is the crew’s doctor, though ironically, he has a weak body and needs his horse, Stronger (who is just as sick) to get around. His nickname is ‘Shinigami’ which literally means God of Death. Most fans however refer to him as the ‘Grim Reaper’. He meets Luffy, Zoro, and Nami during the Jaya arc, while in Mock Town. After the Straw Hats help him get back on his horse, he offers Luffy an apple from the basket he is carrying. Unbeknownst to Luffy, Doc Q had been offering explosive apples to other pirates in Mock Town, who would then explode once they ate it. Luckily for Luffy, he picks a dud, and Doc Q tells him he is very lucky before riding off. Strangely, he is seen rowing on Blackbeard’s ship, even though his body is supposedly sick and weak. Also, in the manga, both him and Stronger are seen swiftly running away from Blackbeard’s and Ace’s climatic fight, with the rest of Blackbeard’s crew (In the anime Doc Q passes out while running and is carried by Burgess, then Stronger passes out seconds afterwards, annoying Burgess). While he didn’t fight Ace, Doc Q (and Stronger) easily shrugged off one of Ace’s attacks.
Lafitte (ラフィット, Rafitto) first appeared when he joined, unannounced and uninvited, at the meeting of the Shichibukai and the Marines to determine the replacement for Sir Crocodile in order to recommend his captain. He used to be a policeman in West Blue, but he became a pirate after being exiled from the police force and West Blue for being excessively violent and cruel. He is incredibly pale and sickly looking, and is usually tap-dancing, even when walking or running. Despite these impediments Lafitte is shown to be very stealthy and agile, as not even “Hawkeye” Mihawk noticed him before he spoke up (a remarkable task, for he wears tap-dancing shoes). While dodging Ace’s Hiken he used a move similar to Soru showing his agility.
His name may have been inspired by Jean Lafitte, a famous real-life pirate.
In the English version of the PS2 and Gamecube game, One Piece Pirates’ Carnival, Lafitte is named Raffit. Most likely since Montblanc Cricket’s changed name {Monbran Cricket} was kept in the funimation dub, Lafitte’s english dub name will probably be kept was Raffit.
Blackbeard pirates are much stronger than normal pirates depicted so far in the story. Van Auger shot a flock of seagulls from a distance so far the Straw Hats couldn’t even see the island he was on. Jesus Burgess is a wrestling champion and won every fight he was in in Mock Town. Laffite was able to sneak into the World Government headquarters of Mariejoa during a meeting between several high-ranking Navy officials and three Shichibukai members completely undetected until he spoke up, a feat made even greater by his wearing tap shoes. The crew captain, Blackbeard, has shown that he is capable of fighting Red-Haired Shanks (who is himself an equal to both Whitebeard and Mihawk, two of the world’s strongest men) and living to tell of it (it was Teach who gave Shanks the scars on his left eye). He also acquired the power of the Yami Yami Fruit, and it has proven to be a uniquely powerful fruit. Lastly, their attack on Drum Island was overwhelming to the point that it forced its king Wapol to flee the country entirely.
They believe heavily in fate and luck, using often cruel measures to see how destiny plays out. One example is Van Auger, who shot a group of seagulls just to see the ones destined to die slow and painful deaths. Another example is demonstrated by Jesus Burgess, who challenges random people to a fight to see who wins. Doc Q also handed out apples in Mock Town to see who was unlucky enough to get ones that exploded after one bite and who did not. Even when they chase after Luffy to the Knock-Up Stream, his escape was put down to fate.
While it has never been stated by Oda where the influence of their flag comes from, the image of the or 3 heads appears as a classic depiction of Cerberus. The three heads of Cerberus are suppose to see the past, the present and the future and Cerberus was also the guardian of the gates of Hades. This happens to tie in with the crews views of fate and destiny as well as their often deadly methods for seeing how fate plays out and may be the reason behind the three skulls. It may also be a depiction of the Moirae, the three goddesses of Fate.
All members of the crew appear to be massive humans, not unlike Aokiji or Whitebeard. Initially Lafitte was thought to be roughly the size of a normal human male but his most recent appearance revealed him to be nearly as tall as Teach. In addition, all of the crewmembers (save for Doc Q) are named after real life pirates.

The Black Cat Pirates (クロネコ海賊団, Kuroneko Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Captain Kuro. They are a crew of pirates who appeared early on in the series carrying out orders under their captain, Kuro, who had taken the alias of Klahadore the butler.
Three years before the present storyline, Kuro grew tired of setting up schemes for his crew mates and of constantly being hunted down by the Marines. That was when he decided to have an impostor take his place as Captain Kuro and be executed in his stead by Morgan, so that the hunt for him would be ceased. [1] Soon after, Captain Kuro set up an elaborate scheme in a small village he came to live in, in order to live free from pursuit with great wealth. He took the name Kurahadol (Klahadore in the 4kids dub) and, for three years, lived as the butler of the wealthy parents of Kaya. He then became the sickly Kaya’s caretaker. When three years passed, he contacted his old first mate, the hypnotist Jango, and arranged for the Black Cat pirates to lay siege to the village, force Kaya to write and sign a will leaving all her wealth to Kuro, and then kill Kaya. Unknown to his crew, however, Kuro was also intending to kill all of them as well.
After Usopp and Luffy overheard Kuro explaining the plan to Jango, Usopp tried to warn everyone in town, but Kurahadol’s reputation and Usopp’s tendency to lie led them to not believe him. Thus, the Straw Hat pirates took it upon themselves to protect the village. Through a difficult battle, Luffy managed to keep up with Kuro’s insane speed and defeat him, and at the same time Usopp managed to protect Kaya from Jango. Afterwards, the crew, sans Jango, fled the island.
Kuro’s flag is that of a simply-drawn cat face.

Kuro
Kuro is the former Captain of the crew. He is known as “Kuro of the Thousand Plans” for his elaborate plans that virtually never fail. Thusly, he earns the title of the second most intelligent person in the East Blue behind Ben Beckman. [2] He has super-human speed with which to deliver his attacks. His skill is such that at full speed he is only able to be seen as a vague blur or by the damage his attacks cause. He primarily uses a special attack called Shakushi (Death Scoop/Death Ladle), that allows him to sweep a large area, killing anything his claws connect with at random, including his own crew. The technique travels at the roughly the same speed as CP9’s Soru ability. The difference is that when Kuro uses that technique, he cannot see what he is attacking, whereas CP9 have mastered this ability and therefore can.

Sham and Buchi (シャム、Shamu, and ブチ, Buchi, Siam and Butchie in the English version.), also known as the Nyaban Brothers (Meowban Brothers), are the two lookouts of the Black Cat pirates. The two try to act cowardly when first approaching an opponent, but show their true colors once their opponent’s guard is down. They fight against Zoro during Kuro’s attempt to raid Syrup Village (Usopp’s hometown), but are ultimately defeated. Buchi is fat and Sham is the one with green hair and a hunched back. Jango hypnotizes Buchi into becoming extremely powerful, being able to crush rock with one jump. Despite this increase in strength, he is defeated once again by Zoro. It is most likely that Zoro killed Sham because when Buchi got up and Sham didn’t, the following quotes were said: Kuro: “He is still alive, I’m not impressed.” Zoro: “Huh? Lucky.”
Nugire Yainu

Nugire Yainu was the name of the Black Cat crewmember who was killed three years earlier by marines. He was hypnotised by Jango to believe he was Captain Kuro. His name and position are never mentioned in either the anime or manga but are later revealed in the One Piece Blue Data book.
Most of the crew is weak and easily defeatable. Aside from their captain they have little strength as a whole. Buchi and Sham were the only other crew members aside from Kuro himself with any real fighting ability. The crew mostly relies on being hypnotised by Jango into believing they have immense strength in addition to the schemes of their cunning captain.

The Bellamy Pirates (ベラミー海賊団, Beramī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Bellamy the Hyena.
The Bellamy Pirates are attempting to usher in a “New Age” where pirates don’t search for dream treasures like the One Piece and instead focus on the treasures around them. According to Sarquiss, all of the Bellamy crew come from North Blue. They are looking for strong pirates to join their cause, and laugh at anyone still stuck in what they call the “Age of Dreams”. The leader, Bellamy, is considered a big-time rookie. Or so he was until he encountered the series’ protagonists, the Strawhat Pirates.
They were originally led by Donquixote Doflamingo, one of the 7 Shichibukai. He, like the rest of the crew, believes in the New Age.
The Bellamy Pirates make their first appearance on the island of Jaya in Mock Town, a pirate-infested port. At this point in the series, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami were in town searching for information about the legendary Sky Island while the others waited on the ship, which brings them into conflict with Bellamy. According to Bellamy, he was going to see if Luffy was worthy of joining in on the New Age, but as soon as Nami asked for information about Sky Island, he rejected that notion, and instead taunted them with the rest of his crew. However, despite the taunting getting rather violent, Luffy and Zoro chose not to fight back, mirroring an action of Shanks’ earlier in the series. After they left, Bellamy chose not to pursue them, thinking them to be weak.
However, as luck would have it, they would once again confront the Straw Hats. Bellamy hears about how Monteblanc Cricket had uncovered some gold, and as a result decides to take it from him, badly injuring him and The Saruyama Alliance in the process. This turns out to be a bad move, as Cricket was helping the Straw Hats go to Sky Island. Seeking revenge, Luffy runs back to town. At this point, the latest bounties come in, revealing Luffy’s 100 million bounty and Zoro’s 60 million bounty, but Bellamy concludes that they were fakes made to scare him. When Luffy and Bellamy fight, however, after shrugging off several of Bellamy’s quick attacks, Luffy beats him in one punch, proving the accuracy of the bounty.
Later, after hearing of Bellamy’s defeat, Donquixote Doflamingo comes to Mock Town and forces Sarquiss to kill him, claiming that he dishonored his flag.
The Bellamy Pirates bear two flags–one is Donquixote’s flag, while the other is Bellamy’s personal flag.
Donquixote’s flag is a crossed-out smiley face with a wide grin showing teeth. Though Sarquiss has this tattooed on his chest, it is unknown if the other crewmembers have done the same.
Bellamy’s flag is a pair of red lips against crossbones with the tongue sticking out.
The Bellamy pirates’ ship, New Witch’s Tongue, is a medium sized vessel. Its figure head is based on Doflamingos flag. It was only shown briefly and had no apparent special features.
Bellamy
Captain (55,000,000 beli bounty)
- Seiyuu: Wataru Takagi
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): Justin Cook
Bellamy (ベラミー, Beramī?) is the captain of the crew and has a 55,000,000 Beli bounty. Bellamy earned his nickname from his trademark grin (which was most likely never seen again after his swift defeat by Luffy) and his reputation for scavenging riches from other pirates, much like a hyena scavenges its food. Bellamy’s character is one that is arrogant, violent and vain, but significantly humbled when facing more powerful foes, since he revealed to his superior, who is a Shichibukai, that he only engages in fights that he knows he can win. This later led to his ultimate defeat handed to him by Monkey D. Luffy, whom Bellamy thought was weak. Bellamy and his pirate crew play a significant role in the Jaya Arc of the series. It would seem that his Devil Fruit power contributed greatly to his high bounty, which may explain why he tends to show off his abilities when fighting adversaries.
Later on, at the end of the Skypiea arc the true leader of the Bellamy Pirates, Donquixote Doflamingo, who is one of Shichibukai, returned to Jaya to kick him out of his crew and forced Sarquiss, the crew’s first mate to attack and kill Bellamy “as a lesson,” for disgracing his flag when Bellamy was beaten by Monkey D. Luffy.
Doflamingo’s last words to Bellamy were as follows:
| “ |
But you know Bellamy… this is what I like about you! Hahaha! The new era is almost upon us. Go do as you like. However… I don’t need you on my side. |
The second mate of Bellamy the Hyena, Sarquiss (サーキース, Sākīsu) with a bounty of 38,000,000 for his head. Just like his captain, he strongly believes that a New Age is coming and laughs at anyone who mentioned their dreams. He is often seen with a woman on his side, Lily. He is nick-named ‘Big Knife’, due to his large dagger (it bears a strong resemblance to a massive kukri). After Luffy easily defeated Bellamy however, they were paid a visit by Donquixote Doflamingo who, with his power, seemingly forced Sarquiss to kill Bellamy. He is also notable for attempting to stop Luffy by unwisely challenging him into a fight after the latter recovered Cricket’s stolen gold, but only cringed when the boy finally turned his attention to the remaining Bellamy Pirates, and that is why Blackbeard slammed his face hard on the ground later that night
In the English version of the PS2/Gamecube game One Piece Pirates’ Carnival, Sarquiss has been named “Sirkees”. The “Big Knife” nickname is added on. Before FUNimation got the dubbing rights for One Piece, 4kids was going to change Sarquiss’ name to Carnaby Skeet.
Other Crewmates
While they are not named in the anime nor the manga, the names of Bellamy’s crew appear in the One Piece Blue Data book. Below are some of the members of the crew who stood their ground after seeing Bellamy bested by Luffy, but did nothing whatsoever to prevent the Straw Hat from retrieving the gold they stole.
- Ross: Fighter. The one wearing a similar attire to Braham from Skypeia.
- Eddy: Navigator. He’s the bespectacled “pretty boy” of the Bellamy Pirates who determined the location of the Saruyama Alliance base for Bellamy. It was he who reprimanded Sarquiss from taking on Luffy in the anime. His status as the navigator is evident by the Log Pose on his right wrist.
- Huett: Cook.
- Rivers: (Patrick Seitz) Sniper. The one wearing the hat with long ear-flaps. In the manga, it was he who stopped Sarquiss from going after Luffy and not Eddy.
- Mani: Female fighter. The curly-haired black-skinned beauty who was first seen side-by-side with Rivers. Despite being a “fighter”, she, like the rest of the crew did nothing to stop Luffy.
- Myure: Doctor. The curvy female wearing a tight-fitting yellow outfit and crosses decorated on her boots. Being the crews physician, she presumably made the bandage aroung Bellamy’s head that was seen when Donquixote Doflamingo came to Jaya to punish him. It is unknown how advanced her medical skills are.
- Lily (Trina Nishimura): She goes around with Sarquiss.
Note: These names are translated directly from Japanese and might not be the correct romanizations.
- Former members: Donquixote Doflamingo (340,000,000 belli bounty)
Despite high confidence, the crew is relatively weak. The only notable fighters are Bellamy and Sarquiss, with Bellamy being the most skilled. They hide their true incompetence by beating other pirates with lesser strength in the hopes that by doing so, they will get stronger. It seems that their stategy for attacking other pirates revolves around Bellamy and Sarquiss acting as the main attacking force while their weaker members deal with the already-beaten adversaries in their wake. And to impress others, they usually do it with bravado in public. This way of encountering others blinded them from recognizing that Luffy and Zoro are actually several calibres away from their level. The fact that Luffy defeated their strongest member, Bellamy, without the use of his Devil Fruit powers is only proof of the crew’s weakness. Interestingly, while they claim to recruit only the strongest of the strong pirates for their cause, all they managed to gather so far were pirates of mediocre skill, who won’t even stand up to themselves after they saw Bellamy beaten to the ground, running away instead.
It appears Donquixote Doflamingo has some pride in his flag and was not happy about Bellamy losing while serving under it. While it remains unknown what will happen next it is almost certain Donquixote Doflamingo will appear later on, though whether or not Bellamy’s crew will accompany him is another question.
A version of Donquixote’s flag that is not crossed out appears on the packets of Whitebeard’s I.V. It has yet to be seen if there is any significance to this. One theory is that the grinning smily face represents the Age of Dreams, possibly referring to how Gold Roger grinned at his execution, which is why it is crossed out on his flag.

The Arlong Pirates (アーロン一味, Āron Ichimi) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Arlong. Every member of the crew is a Fish-Man.
Originally they were led by Jimbei, but when he became one of the Shichibukai the crew split up for as of yet unknown reasons, leaving Arlong in charge of his own crew, who he led out of the Grand Line and towards East Blue, which had much weaker prey. They believe they are above humans as the stronger species, looking down on them as mere maggots, though it should be noted that not all fish-men share this belief. They intended to take over the entire East Blue with the help of Nami, who they forced to work for them making incredibly detailed maps.
Eight years before the present storyline, the Arlong Pirates invaded an island and forced the residents to pay a large monthly tax for their own survival–100 thousand beli per adult, and 50 thousand per child. Belle-Mère was only able to pay for her daughters, so Arlong killed her as an example, leaving her adopted daughters Nami and Nojiko. Seeing how skilled at map-making Nami was at such as early age, Arlong kidnapped her and forced her to become a member of his crew making maps for her. In order to convince her, he struck a deal–if she can somehow gather 100 million beli and give it to him, he will free her and her village. Thus, Nami began her life as a thief. As a show of their power, the crew constructed their headquarters, Arlong Park, in clear sight. They struck deals with corrupt Marine officials like Captain Nezumi in order to prevent attacks and started to build up their forces to take over all of East Blue.
During the present day, Arlong had already conquered over 20 villages but Nami was getting dangerously close to her goal, and Arlong was getting worried. If Nami left, he would lose a valuable part of the team, as her maps were essential for coming up with strategies. Thus, he told Nezumi where Nami kept all of her money and had him confiscate all it, but Nami and the other villagers instantly realized that Arlong was behind it and finally decided to fight back.
After several long and difficult battles, Arlong Park was toppled by Luffy, freeing the entire island from his reign. He and his surviving crew were arrested, though Hachi managed to escape and start a takoyaki restaurant.
Arlong’s flag is that of a saw-nosed shark turned to the left with the tail curving inward . Around the shark is a semi-oval with three curves emitting from it. Behind the shark is a crossbone. This flag is tattooed onto all members of the crew.
Another symbol that may or may not be Jimbei’s flag is a sun-shaped tattoo that appears on several members of the Arlong Pirates. However, this has yet to be confirmed and momoo doesn’t have it (despite being a secret weapon).
Arlong
Captain (20,000,000 Belli bounty)
Seiyuu: Jūrōta Kosugi
Arlong was a feared and ruthless pirate, once considered the most dangerous cutthroat in all of East Blue. The Sawshark Fish-Man was once a member of the Fish-Man Pirates, of which Jimbei was captain. But when Jimbei joined the Shichibukai, Arlong split from the group for as of yet unknown reasons, along with his own “Arlong Pirates,” and left the Grand Line for easier targets.
When Arlong and his crew (consisting of Hachi, Chuu, and Kuroobi), first arrived on the island that would someday become Arlong Park, the first village he encountered was Cocoyashi Village (Coco Village in the English version), the home of Nami. Arlong then proceeded to extort money out of the residents of Cocoyashi Village. Adults would have to pay 100 thousand Beli (this setting’s monetary unit), children would pay 50 thousand or be executed by Arlong’s men. Bellemere (Nami’s adoptive mother) only had 100 thousand Beli so she decided to pay for Nami and Nojiko and sacrifice herself. Arlong shot her in front of her children as an example of disobedience and then kidnapped Nami.
He forced Nami to become a part of his crew as a map maker, and told her that if she brought him 100 million Beli he would free her village and everyone in it, including her adoptive sister Nojiko. Years later, when Nami was about to fulfill her end of the bargain using money she stole from Monkey D. Luffy, Arlong arranged to have a corrupt Marine captain confiscate the money from her so she would be forever under his control.
Luffy, who followed Nami after being robbed by her, saw Nami brutally stabbing Arlong’s tattoo on her arm in desperation. Angered by the obvious suffering Arlong had wrought against her, Luffy stopped her from hurting herself and unquestioningly accepted her plea for help. A long and arduous battle ensued between Luffy, Arlong, and the elites of their crews.
By the end of the fight, only Luffy and Arlong were left standing and Luffy was taking a beating from Arlong’s high-speed diving attack Shark On Darts and his sword Kiribachi (Saw Shaped Sword), which resembled a long steel saw with teeth shaped like a shark’s. Luffy seemed on the verge of defeat until the battle moved into the top of Arlong Park, where Nami slavishly made her maps for Arlong as a child. While there, Arlong asked Luffy if he could use her as well as he did. This enrages Luffy, as Arlong sees Nami not as a person, but as a tool. Luffy crushed the Shark Saw, and the tables turned dramatically.
After destroying Arlong’s Kiribachi, using the full power of his attack Gomu Gomu no Ono/Gum Gum Axe, Luffy managed to send the full force of Arlong’s attack Shark On Haguruma (Gear) attack through to the bottom of Arlong Park, breaking Arlong’s cartilaginous back and destroying the building in the process. Given his strength of body and will, however, some speculate that the blow wasn’t enough to kill him outright (also Luffy is known of not killing his enemies, no matter how cruel they are).
Chu
In the featurette: Take Aim! The Pirate Baseball King Chu’s name was written as Chew on the back of his baseball shirt.
Seiyuu: Masaya Onosaka
- Voice Actor (4Kids Entertainment): Tom Wayland
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): ?
Chu (チュウ, Chū)(Choo in the 4kids dub) is a Archerfish-man. In the Japanese version, he has a habit of saying “chu” (an onomatopoeic kissing-noise) after each sentence. Chu is one of the more cool-headed officers in Arlong’s crew and can spit water out of his mouth as if it were a bullet. He ends just about all his sentences with “smek”. (”chew” in the 4kids dub) He later fights with the apparently-outmatched Usopp, but he is ultimately beaten after Usopp wears him down by running away and setting him on fire, before repeatedly hitting him over his head with his “Usopp-Hammer” to knock him out.
Kuroobi (クロオビ, Kuroobi) is a ray-type fish-man. Kuroobi is one of the strictest members in his crew and has always been wary of Nami’s supposed allegiance to Arlong. Kuroobi practices “Fish-Man Karate” (called “Merman Karate” in the now defunct 4kids dub) to fight his opponents. During the battle with the Straw Hats in the Arlong arc, he fights against Sanji whom he nearly defeats when the cook goes underwater to try and save Luffy. As a Fish-Man, Kuroobi has an advantage underwater. However, Sanji manages to force him up to dry land by breathing the air from his gills, suffocating him, and then promptly beats him into submission with his kicks.
Momoo (モーム, Mōmu)(Mohmoo in the now defunct 4kids dub) is a giant “sea cow” (literally) that was brought from the Grand Line by Arlong’s crew. It was he that destroyed Gosa Village. However when he encounters Luffy, Sanji and Yosaku’s boat, he is promptly beaten, and used to tow their boat to the island. Later, during the battle at Arlong Park, he is called upon by Hatchan (his caregiver) to the fight the Straw Hats. Despite memories of his first defeat, he does as told, only to be used in the Gomu Gomu no Kazaguruma, an attack by Luffy that takes out most of Arlong’s forces, and then was thrown out of Arlong Park in the process, never to be seen again.hi
As Fish-Men, they are twice as strong as ordinary humans, 10 times stronger under water, and are not afraid to use cruel measures to incite fear and show how much stronger they are than humans. They are fearsome fighters and almost unbeatable under water. For the Straw Hats, this was the toughest of their early fights, pushing them all to their limits. Their leader Arlong was not bothered by Luffy having a Devil Fruit power and took advantage of his weakness to the effects of the sea (though Luffy would have sunk anyway due to the fact that his legs are trapped in rock). With Nami’s maps, their abilities increase even further, as they can take advantage of ocean currents by blocking them with boulders to create whirlpools, among other actions. With the Navy focusing their attention on the Grand Line and the incapacitation of all other major East Blue pirate bands by the Straw Hats, there would have been nothing to stop them from taking over East Blue if the Straw Hat Pirates hadn’t intervened.
